The Pack's Judgment

Chloe's POV

The council chamber smelled of cedar smoke and old blood, and I had stood in it a hundred times without noticing until today.

Three years as Luna of the Silverpine Pack. Three years of settling disputes over grazing rights and grain stores, of sitting at my uncle's right hand while he decided which families ate through the winter. I had learned every stone in this room. Tonight it felt like somewhere I had never been.

Twelve elders ringed the carved circle, and every one of them had eaten at my table.

"Chloe Moonwhisper." Alpha Gareth's voice filled the chamber the way it always did, unhurried, certain, a man who had never in his life needed to raise it. My uncle. My mother's brother. The one who took me in at nine years old when the fever took both my parents in the same week. "You stand accused of the gravest failure a Luna can commit."

My throat closed. I had rehearsed this. Every word of my defence, lying awake for a week while the summons sat unopened on the table by my bed.

Not one of those words came.

"Three years without a bond," Elder Maris said. Her silver hair caught the firelight, braided the way she had braided mine the morning of my investiture, her fingers gentle at my temples while she told me I would be the best of us. "Three years without an heir. Three years of weakness."

"I have served this pack with everything I have."

"Silence."

The command struck like a hand across the face. My jaw shut without my permission, and deep in my chest my wolf, still mine, still there, made a low sound of confusion I had no way to answer.

Elder Kael rose, scarred and slab-faced, the only one who had never pretended to like me. "The hunts grow thin. The borders shrink. The young ones look at their Luna and see a woman the moon forgot." His eyes found mine and did not waver. "A tree without roots is still a tree. Right up until the wind comes."

"Give me more time." My voice came out smaller than I wanted. "One more season. I can find him. I can."

"You have failed." Gareth stepped down from the dais, and each footfall landed in the silence like something being set down carefully. "The council has reached its decision."

*Reached.* Past tense. I heard it and did not understand what I was hearing, not yet.

"By the authority of this council, we strip you of your rank. You are Luna no more."

The first tear went down my cheek before I knew it had come.

"Further." Maris stepped forward, and there was something in her hands. "We sever your bond with this pack. You are exiled to the borderlands and forbidden to return."

"This is my home." My voice cracked straight down the middle. "You are my family."

"You have no family," Kael said. "Not anymore."

Gareth's hand closed around my wrist, and his grip was iron, and his face was the same face that had taught me to read. "There is one final matter. Your wolf."

Ice went through me.

"No. You cannot."

"A wolf without a pack is a danger to everyone."

"She will be bound. You will walk as a human."

"She is part of me!" I twisted against him and the grip only tightened. "You cannot cut out part of a person and call it justice."

Maris raised the blade.

And that was the moment. Not the verdict, not the sentence. That.

Because the blade was silver, and its edge already carried the oily green sheen of wolfsbane extract, and wolfsbane must be drawn down and steeped for nine days before it will hold to metal. My mother had taught me that, in the herb room, when I was small enough to need a stool to reach the table.

Nine days.

The summons had come to me six days ago.

I looked up at Maris and she looked back and something passed behind her eyes, quick, and gone, and unmistakable.

She had known. Before the accusation. Before the debate. Before a single elder had said a word in that chamber, she had been steeping a blade.

"Hold her," she said.

Two warriors came out of the shadows at the wall and put me on my knees, and I did not fight them, because my mind had gone very quiet and very far away, turning a single fact over and over like a stone in the hand.

*The verdict was written before the trial.*

"I am sorry," Maris whispered, close to my ear. "This will hurt."

The blade touched the inside of my left wrist.

Fire went up my arm and into my chest and behind my eyes. I heard someone screaming and understood distantly that it was me. Inside my mind my wolf threw herself against the binding, howling, scrabbling, a sister drowning in a river I could not reach into.

Maris drew the edge across my skin in one clean line and burned the sigil in. The silver glowed a sick green.

My wolf's howl thinned. Went far. Went faint.

*Don't leave me.*

The bond snapped.

What came after was not pain. It was an absence. Where there had been a presence my whole life, a warmth, a second heartbeat, an argument, a companion, there was a silence so total it had a shape. I fell forward into the warriors' hands and made a sound I have never made before or since.

"It is done," Gareth said. "Chloe Moonwhisper is cast out from the Silverpine Pack. She is no longer one of us. She is no longer Luna."

He waited exactly long enough.

"She is nothing."

They let go, and I went down onto the cold stone.

"You have until dawn to leave our territory," Kael said. "After sunrise you will be killed as a trespasser."

They filed out one by one, and not one of them looked at me, and I lay on the floor of the room where I had been crowned until the cold made the decision for me.

I got up. My legs shook. There was a small travelling pack against the wall, already prepared, already waiting, and I looked at it for a long moment and then picked it up and did not let myself think about who had packed it or when.

I walked out through the corridors I had known for three years. Servants turned to the walls as I passed. Not one met my eye.

The night air took me across the face, sharp and clean and merciless, and above the pack house the full moon hung bright and enormous and entirely indifferent.

"Why?" I asked.

The moon said nothing. It never does.

I turned my back on the only home I had and walked into the dark.

Thirty paces down the track something made me look back. I have asked myself since why I did. There was nothing left in that house for me and I knew it already.

The pack house stood black against the sky, every window shuttered but one.

Gareth stood in it, lit from behind, watching me go.

I had braced for a great many things that night. Contempt. Satisfaction. The cold, correct face of a man who had done a hard thing for the good of his people and would carry it as a burden and expect to be thanked for the carrying.

That was not what I saw.

My uncle was watching the track the way a man watches a door he has been waiting a long time to see close. Not grieving. Not even pleased, exactly.

Relieved.

He had cut the wolf out of his brother's daughter and stripped her of her name and sent her into the borderlands to freeze, and he was standing at that window with the loose shoulders of a man who has finally set down something heavy.

Nine days.

I stood in the road with the

cold coming through my boots and understood, far too late to matter, that I had never been on trial at all.

I had been in the way.

Truly, it means a lot to me that you're here at the very start of Chloe and Theron's story. I know these first few chapters ask a lot of you upfront, exile, loss, a bargain neither of them fully trusts yet. I promise it's building to something. Stick with me through the setup, and I think you'll find it's worth every chapter it takes to get there. Thank you for your patience, and for giving this story a chance. I'm so glad you're here.xx~R

I cannot tell from the writing which.""Tried and failed," I said, understanding before he finished."He sent word to both courts. Roderic's father, and whoever held Matthias's throne at the time. Neither answered in time. The moon cycle passed. My mother was already too far gone to wait for the next one." Theron's hand closed around the page, not crushing it, just holding it the way you hold something you are afraid will disappear if you let go too quickly. "He wrote this at the very end. After. I glanced up at him shadows under his eyes, lines of exhaustion carved deep around his mouth, and yet he stood straight as a sw

Chloe's POVAdrian was awake when I came in, propped against pillows with his bandaged hand resting on the blanket, and something in his face changed the moment he saw mine."You've been riding," he said. "All night, from the state of you. What happened.""We found Seraphine.""Thank the gods." Relief moved across his face, quick and unguarded, the kind that was hard to fake even for someone as easy with a smile as Adrian usually was. "Is she—""Alive. Cold. Furious." I pulled the chair beside his bed closer and sat, close enough that he couldn't mistake this for a courtesy visit. "She heard something, while she was held. A name Thorne used. Someone who already knew everything Thorne knew, without needing convincing."Adrian's expression didn't change right away. That, more than anything, was what made me watch him closer."You think it was me," he said finally, quiet."I think Theron is standing outside that door right now deciding whether to believe it was."Something flickered behin
