Chloe's POV

Four days later, my body began shutting down, and I was calm about it in a way that frightened me more than panic would have.

I could track it happening. Thoughts arriving slower, arriving thicker. Fingers and toes going from pain to numbness to nothing at all, which is the part nobody warns you about, that the worst stage does not hurt. My heartbeat going uneven in my chest, skipping and catching.

Hypothermia. I had watched a tracker die of it once, at fourteen, and had not understood why he was smiling at the end.

I understood now.

*Good,* something in me said. *Let it be over.*

Because what exactly was I preserving. No pack. No wolf. No name worth the breath it took to say. Gareth had stood at that window with his shoulders loose and I had spent four days walking with that image behind my eyes, and there is a particular exhaustion that comes from being unable to stop thinking while your body slowly stops working.

I had wedged myself into a gap between two boulders sometime after dark, out of the wind, which was the last competent thing I did.

*I am sorry,* I thought, and did not know who I meant. My wolf. My parents, ten years gone. The girl who had stood up at her own investiture and believed she was going to be the best of them.

The tears froze before they finished falling. I could not even cry properly. It struck me as very funny and I did not have the strength to laugh.

Then the binding mark on my wrist caught fire.

Not the memory of fire. Fire. I gasped and clutched my arm and the sigil burned like Maris was carving it again, fresh, deeper, and the pain went up into my shoulder and my chest and outward until my blood felt like something clawing to get out through my skin.

I tried to scream. Nothing came.

*This is dying,* I thought, distant and reasonable. *This is what it does at the end.*

But it did not stop. It sharpened, and kept sharpening, past anything my body should have been able to hold, and I remember thinking with strange detachment that I was going to come apart.

Then the air changed.

I felt it before I saw anything. The air changed, grew heavy, went charged, like right before a storm breaks. Something I could almost taste.

Light came through the gap in the boulders.

Not dawn. I had been counting the hours and dawn was a long way off, and this light was wrong in every particular. Too bright. Too focused. Too deliberate, like something aimed.

Moonlight.

Except the moon had gone behind cloud before midnight. I had watched it go. I had lain there and resented it for going.

I tried to turn my head. My body did not answer. I was awake inside a thing that had stopped taking instruction.

The light spilled over me and did not stop.

And something reached for me.

I have no better word. There was a presence, vast, old past reckoning, and it was not my wolf, my wolf was severed and silent and gone. This was something that had always been underneath her. Something patient. Something that had been waiting, and had known it would not wait forever.

*What are you?*

It did not answer in words. It simply put itself around me, the way you hold something small and about to break.

Like protection. Like being carried. Like finding a part of myself I never knew I had.

The moonlight went into my veins. It replaced the ice with something molten and it burned, but not the way the sigil burned. This was warm. Alive. It felt less like being healed and more like being *recognised*.

The binding mark pulsed with my heartbeat, faster, faster, and the sigil glowed silver so bright I shut my eyes against my own wrist.

When I opened them, the dark was moving.

Shadows were peeling off the boulders. Gathering. Thickening into shapes with weight and intention, enormous, built out of smoke and something like starlight, and they circled the gap where I lay with their heads low and their eyes burning the same silver that was now running through me.

Wolves. Or the idea wolves come from.

*Guardians,* the old thing whispered. Not my wolf's voice. Something further back than that. *They have been waiting for you.*

*Waiting for what?*

*For you to wake up.*

None of it made sense and all of it was happening. They moved with purpose, with intelligence, with the settled calm of something that had done this before and expected to do it again.

Then the nearest one turned its head sharply toward the treeline and pulled its lips back from teeth made of nothing at all.

Something was coming.

I felt it a half-second behind them, a presence moving through the trees, heavy and unhurried. Powerful in a way that made the guardians go rigid.

They coiled to attack.

*No,* the old voice said, quiet and absolutely certain. *Not an enemy.*

*Then what.*

*Your destiny.*

I wanted to laugh again. Destiny. I had been Luna of the Silverpine Pack and destiny had put me face down between two rocks with my wolf cut out of me.

The footsteps came closer. Deliberate. Two-legged. Nothing that walked on four feet announces itself like that.

The guardians did not scatter. They *parted*, the way an honour guard parts, and that was somehow the most frightening thing that had happened all night.

A shadow fell across the gap and blocked out the stars.

I could not turn my head. I could only lie there and wait to be looked at.

Something crouched at the mouth of the boulders, close enough that I felt the cold come off its cloak, and for a long moment it said nothing at all. It only studied me, like it had been looking for me a very long time and could not quite believe it had finally found me.

Then it spoke, low, and almost to itself.

"There you are."

A pair of eyes came level with mine.

They caught the moonlight and flared red.

That's the last thing I saw before darkness took me.

Chloe's POVThe next morning, I felt the weight of every gaze.I walked through the Shadow Court with Sera at my side, and everywhere we went, people stared. Whispered."Ignore them," Sera said quietly."Hard to ignore when they're so obvious."We reached the great hall, where Theron was meeting with his advisors. I hesitated at the entrance."You belong here," Sera said. "Remember that."I squared my shoulders and walked in.The conversation stopped the moment I appeared.Theron looked up, his expression softening. "Chloe. Come."I crossed to him, acutely aware of the advisors watching my every move."We were just discussing last night's event," Lord Darius said, his tone neutral."Event?" I repeated."The power surge," Marcus clarified. "It happened behind closed doors, but those of us old enough to remember what this bloodline's magic used to feel like noticed anyway. It moved through the whole keep, faint as it was."Heat crept up my neck."The ritual is progressing well," Theron

Chloe's POVHe came to my room three nights later, and he knocked, which I had not expected."You can come in," I said.He did not, at first. He stood in the doorway with his shoulder against the frame and looked at me for a while."Marcus says the third mark is ready to go," he said. "He says the attunement work has taken us as far as it can. After this it needs the rest of it.""I know what it needs.""I want to hear you say it anyway."I put down the book I had not been reading. "You want to sleep with me.""I want you to decide whether I do." He came in and shut the door. "Those are not the same thing and I would like us to keep them separate for as long as we possibly can.""You have said something like that before.""I will keep saying it." He sat down on the end of the bed, which put him further from me than he needed to be, and I understood that was deliberate. "There is no part of this I am comfortable with. I am asking a woman who has lost everything to give me one more thin

  • Cursed Bonds:The Wolflees Luna's Redemption    Lunar Attunement

Chloe's POVI gave Theron my answer on the third evening, and I gave it badly, because I had rehearsed it and the rehearsal did not survive contact with his face."I will do it," I said. "With conditions."He had been standing at the window with his back to me. He did not turn around straight away, and when he did, whatever had been on his face was already packed away."Name them.""You do not lie to me. Not to protect me, not to spare me, not because you have decided I have had enough for one week." I kept my voice level with some effort. "If something in your histories says this costs me, you tell me the same day you learn it.""Done.""You did not think about that.""I have been thinking about it for four days." He came away from the window. "What else.""You stop the moment I say stop. Not the moment you agree with my reasons. The moment I say it."Something moved behind his eyes. "That one is harder.""Then it is the one I need most.""Yes," he said. "It is." He was quiet for a m

Chloe's POVI did not give Theron an answer that night, and by morning I had decided I was not going to give him one until I understood what I would be agreeing to.Which is how I ended up in the archive at an hour when only servants and insomniacs are awake, being told no by a man who was too polite to say it."The lower shelves are open to you," Marcus said. "Anything above the second gallery requires the King's word.""He carried me across a border. I assume that counts for something.""It counts for a great deal. It does not count as the King's word." He did not move from where he was standing, which happened to be between me and the stairs. "Lady Chloe. You have been on your feet for a day and a half.""And in that day and a half I have been asked to hand over my body and my blood to a curse nobody will describe to me in plain language." I let that sit. "You keep the histories. I am asking the man who keeps the histories for a history."Something worked behind his face. He was, I

  • Cursed Bonds:The Wolflees Luna's Redemption    Welcome to the Shadow Court

Chloe's POVI woke because someone was arguing about me.Not near me. Below me, somewhere down through the floor, two voices going back and forth in the particular rhythm of people who have been having the same argument for some time and are no longer enjoying it.I lay still with my eyes shut and did what I had been taught to do since I was nine years old, which is find out where you are before anyone knows you are awake.First thing I noticed was the warmth all the way through.Linen against my skin, and good linen. A fire somewhere to my left, well banked. The smell of stone and cold iron and something faintly resinous underneath it.And silence where my wolf had been. That last landed the way it had every morning since the council chamber, sharp and sudden. You do not get used to it. You only get better at not making a sound about it.I opened my eyes.Black stone, vaulted, high enough that the ceiling went into shadow. Tall windows with snow light coming through them. A bed I coul

  • Cursed Bonds:The Wolflees Luna's Redemption    What I Came For

Theron's POVI had been looking for her for eleven years. Not her, precisely. I did not know her face or her name or that she would be lying between two rocks in the borderlands with frost in her hair. I knew only what I needed. A Luna with no wolf in her. Empty enough to hold the moon.Eleven years of chasing rumours that led nowhere. And here she was, three hours' walk from my own border, dying quietly and doing a competent job of it.I crouched at the mouth of the boulders, shadow moving with me the way it always did.The guardians had not attacked. That was the first thing that troubled me. They had stood aside as I came through the trees, forty of them, made of smoke and older than my bloodline, and they had *let me pass*, and nothing in three hundred years of Shadowborn history says the moon's guardians make way for the cursed. The second thing that troubled me was the sigil on her wrist.I turned her arm over. Silver, burned deep, still glowing that sick green at the edges. Wol
