(Xaden's POV)

I watched the knife incident from the balcony above the dining hall, where no one ever thought to look up.

It was a habit of mine.

People behaved differently when they believed I wasn't in them, and a dinner full of girls competing for my throne was the fastest way to learn who they really were.

So far the evening had taught me that the girl with the boar had poor aim, a worse imagination, and a talent for cruelty she didn't bother to hide.

"Oops," she said brightly, l

  • Cursed To Kiss The Ruthless Lycan King    A Christening Gown?

(Gwen's POV)A dress arrived in a flat white box tied with silver ribbon, carried by a maid who curtsied, placed it on my bed, and left before I could ask a single question."What is this?" I said to the empty room before realizing she was gone.Inside, folded in layers of tissue, lay a gown the color of the inside of a seashell. It was soft pink with a fitted bodice, sleeves of sheer lace that ended just above the wrist, and a skirt that fell in long folds like water. A note was pinned to the collar in Rhea's neat hand. “For tonight. Wear gloves. R.”I lifted it out and held it against myself, and the silk slid cool over my fingers. I stood there, holding it, afraid to breathe too hard in case it turned out to be a dream."It's beautiful," I whispered. It took me almost an hour to dress. The laces at the back were tricky, and I had to twist around twice before they would tie, but when I finally turned toward the mirror, I stopped. The pink brought color to my cheeks, and the sleeve

  • Cursed To Kiss The Ruthless Lycan King    The Infamous Prisoner

(Gwen's POV)By the third day, I knew everything in the room. A maid brought my meals on a tray, placed them on the table without a word, and left. Torren stood outside the door, silent as a statue, and I could hear the soft creak of his boots every time he moved.I rolled onto my side and glared at the wall. "Heartless," I muttered. "Smoking, shirtless, heartless man. Who locks a girl in a room because she coughed on his rug?"My cough had eased. The healer's draught had done what she promised, and the burning in my chest had faded to a faint ache. The curse mark had crept another thin line along my wrist, and I had not told Rhea, because I wasn't sure it counted as a change. I pulled my glove on again and told myself I'd mention it later."Three kisses," I said to myself. "That's all the witch asked for. Three kisses. Not three kisses, a poisoned jar, a prison sentence, and a cold-blooded king who threatens to send me home in a cart."I sat up and hugged my knees. "Is it really wo

  • Cursed To Kiss The Ruthless Lycan King    Lord Corvin’s Invitation

(Xaden's POV)She rose from the chair too quickly and caught the arm of it to steady herself. "Thank you for the healer, Your Majesty," she said."Do not thank me. Do as you were told."She nodded. "Three days of rest.""Three days, in your room, with the door closed." I lit the cigarette I had been holding and drew on it. "If I hear that you were seen in the kitchens, the garden, or the training yard, I will have you carried back to your village in a cart."Her mouth tightened. I thought she might argue, and I almost wanted her to. It would have been something to do. But she only sank into a stiff curtsy, her lace glove pressed against her stomach, and backed toward the door."Gwen."She stopped. "Yes?""You will not walk alone.""I can find my own way back, Your Majesty.""That wasn't a question." I raised my voice slightly. "Torren."The door opened at once. The tall guard bowed. He had served me for six years."Take Gwen to her room," I said. "Stay outside her door. If she leaves

  • Cursed To Kiss The Ruthless Lycan King    You’re already inconvenient

(Xaden's POV)I had watched a great many people lie to me. Nobles who swore their loyalty while their hands shook. Guards who promised they had seen nothing when they had seen everything. A brother who once looked me in the eye and told me the stables were on fire, just before he tried to put a knife between my ribs.Gwen did not lie well."It's a nosebleed," she said, pressing her fingers to her lip. "The air in this palace is dry. I get them all the time.""Do you?""Yes, Your Majesty.""And the blood on your shirt?""I… tripped on the stairs."Then she coughed. It was small at first, then harder, and she bent forward with one hand braced on her knee. When she straightened, blood was at the corner of her mouth, and a drop had fallen onto the gray cloth at her collarbone like a tiny wound. She wiped at it quickly, but the blood only spread.I set down my cigarette. "Try again.""I don't know what you—""Gwen." My voice was flat. "You are standing in my bedchamber, bleeding in a tu

  • Cursed To Kiss The Ruthless Lycan King    Blood on Your Shirt

(Gwen's POV)I walked fast down the corridor, pretending I had somewhere important to be. I did. I had to be in that kitchen. Rhea's words was still in my head, and so did a question I couldn't shake. If the poison was in that jar, and the jar was still sitting on that table—someone might have moved it already. I needed to see it again. I needed to know exactly what I had nearly baked into a king's dessert. The kitchen was at the end of the servants' passage, and I walked towards it very fast. The door was half open and I pushed it wider and stopped. The stool was in the same place. The table had been scrubbed clean, and the shelf behind the cinnamon was bare. In the dust on the worktop sat a faint round mark, a ring-shaped print with a thin line through it, as if someone had pressed down hard and been careful not to leave a hand."Someone came for it," I murmured."Came for what?"I spun around. The passage behind me was empty. Only the drip of the basin in the corner broke the s

  • Cursed To Kiss The Ruthless Lycan King    I Will Keep Your Secret

(Gwen's POV)I scrubbed the honey from my hands, splashed cold water on my face, and pinned my hair up with trembling fingers. Rhea wanted to talk to me? What have I done wrong? Did I offend the king again? I pulled on the first clean gray tunic I could find, and when I opened the door, Rhea was already waiting in the corridor with her arms folded."Walk with me," she said."Where are we going?""Somewhere quiet."She led me down a narrow servants' stair, past the laundry where steam drifted from copper tubs, and out through a low wooden door into a walled herb garden. Rosemary and sage grew in neat rows. The stone bench in the center was cold through my skirts. Rhea didn't sit. She stood with her back to the wall and watched the gate."Am I being dismissed?" I asked."Not yet." She turned to face me. "Show me your hand.""I'm sorry?""Your left hand. You've hidden it since the day you arrived. You hid it while you collected the bow from the guard, and while you ate. You hid it fro
