Chapter 5

Author: Bubbly Fish
Scarlet had only gotten together with Marcus two months ago, but he had already repeatedly used his busy work schedule as an excuse to make Scarlet take care of his mother, Anne Jenkins, and pick up his sister, Mabel Crosby, from school.

I had tried countless times to talk sense into Scarlet, telling her that Marcus wasn't right for her. Each time, though, she accused me of being rude, insisting that Marcus only asked her to do these things because he loved her.

"Alright, then. I'll go now," Scarlet said at once without hesitation, despite the heat being unbearable that day. After hanging up, she began packing up her things and prepared to head out.

I walked right past her, no longer wanting to get involved in her business.

I scrolled through a few housing listings on my phone, searching for a place to escape the first wave of extreme heat.

Knowing Scarlet's savior complex, I didn't know what the resources in our home would look like by the end of the apocalypse. I had to be prepared ahead of time, just in case.

While browsing, a villa in the suburbs immediately caught my eye.

"This villa is a good choice! It has an underground bunker, and that will help insulate the interior from the heat outside."

"The owners are all living overseas. They don't care about this villa being reclaimed or repossessed after the apocalypse."

"This is the villa that the female lead moves into, saving her life from the scorching heat!"

The comments that appeared on the screen were flooded with praise for this villa. I immediately rented the place using Scarlet's credit card.

I had already secretly turned off the credit card notification on her phone earlier, so she'd never find out about it.

After all, Scarlet had saved up quite a bit of money after working for years.

Then I placed an online order for ten electricity generators, arranging for them to be delivered to the suburban villa the next morning.

By the time the temperatures hit 120 degrees, the city's power system would be under immense pressure, and the power supply would be limited. And as temperatures continued to rise after that, it was only a matter of time before the entire system collapsed.

Life on Earth would definitely feel like hell without air conditioning then.

I placed another order for 50 sets of thermal protective clothing and a large quantity of thermal insulation materials online, completely emptying the store's inventory altogether.

When temperatures hit 140 degrees, human skin would blister as soon as it was exposed to the sun for a while. When that time came, these thermal protective clothing items would come in handy and become highly sought after, thereby inflating prices tremendously.

Scarlet's credit card was close to maxing out by the time I was done purchasing everything. So, I used the balance to rent a warehouse in the suburbs.

I knew that I had enough space to store everything in the suburban villa, but I still needed to set up a transition point to avoid suspicion.

By the time I was done with everything, it was already late evening, and Scarlet was finally home.

Three disheveled men had followed her back.

"Vi, these three gentlemen had been cheated out of their money, and they haven't eaten anything in days. So, I invited them for dinner."

The three men seemed honest and straightforward, though they also appeared uneasy and hungry.

However, I got such a fright that I couldn't stop the chill going down my spine.

I dug my nails into my palm to hide my fear and panic, and it was all because of the comments that appeared on the screen just then.

"Ah, the female lead was so busy being a saint again that she even dared to bring home three fugitives wanted for murder."

"Yeah. She and Violet will be paying for it tonight."

"Poor Violet. I feel so sorry for her."

"My poor Violet! I had just started liking her, but now, I have to watch her suffer like this."

"I know, right? Scarlet invited them back for dinner out of the kindness of her heart, but they went ahead and forced themselves on poor Violet instead! What jerks! Get the hell out of that place!"

I sneaked out of the back door of the villa with Dustin right behind me. "Did you hear the wolves howling tonight?" I asked.Dustin frowned and thought for a while. "No, I didn't, but I did see some signs of wolf activity when I came in."Realization seemingly suddenly dawned on him, and he quickly latched on. "No wonder you made barbecue for dinner tonight, with the fragrant scent and all! Were you thinking that…"Clearly, Dustin had managed to guess my plan.I nodded and hurried forward. "Let's hurry. This place isn't safe yet."Dustin quickly caught up to me.After a long, brisk walk, we finally reached a higher vantage point overlooking the entire villa."They've appeared," Dustin said softly.I looked up and noticed that plenty of yellow and amber eyes had suddenly appeared around the villa. I counted and realized that there were at least a dozen of them. The wolf pack approached the villa step by step and quickly surrounded the villa."You knew that there were wolves

Dustin was a policeman, and he was very good at physical combat. The criminal ring coveted his combat skills and abducted his sister, Daphne Lively, to coerce him into working for them.He badly wanted to save Daphne, but he didn't know where she was being held captive. That was why he had never been able to succeed. However, since I had the ability to read live comments, I knew where the thugs were holding Daphne hostage.I smiled faintly at Dustin and said, "Never mind about how I know your name. You want to rescue your sister, don't you?"Dustin lowered his head when I mentioned his sister, since it was his most vulnerable spot. "I don't know where they hid her.""But I do," I said.Dustin's eyes lit up at once. He looked at me straight in the eyes and asked urgently, "How do you know? Where is she now?""Never mind how I know it. I'll take you to her as long as you help me out of this situation."Although the temperature had dropped over the past few days, it still wasn't

"It seems like this little bitch really did stockpile a ton of supplies," one of Bobby's men said. "This is enough to feed us for days."She even has a number of generators in the villa. We can finally turn on the air conditioning and enjoy ourselves!"A skinny man went to turn on the air conditioning, and soon, a refreshing coolness filled every corner of the room. Then, a few of the men collapsed onto the couch comfortably, finally relaxing. However, Scarlet's expression was still dark as she glared angrily at me. She didn't even bother hiding the fire in her eyes anymore. "You bitch. You were enjoying yourself here while I suffered back at home. I'm very disappointed in you."I scoffed at her and told her that she deserved it.I should have destroyed her phone when I had the chance so that she would never have found me here."Boss? What should we do with this bitch here?"Bobby just glanced in my direction and nonchalantly said, "Kill her."My eyes twitched, and my heart

I looked out and saw that the ground was littered with the corpses of birds and beasts that had died from the heat.It was so hot outside that even the villa's air conditioning was beginning to lose its effectiveness. At times, I would have to set it to the lowest possible temperature to get just the slightest of coolness in the air.It seemed that I couldn't stay in the villa any longer.I quickly packed up my things and moved into the underground basement instead. It was no wonder the comments praised the basement as the best type of shelter in the heat. The moment I stepped into it, I could feel a cool draft enveloping me.It wasn't as cold as having the air-conditioning units on full blast upstairs, but at least it was better than getting baked alive in the heat.I soon began my daily routine of staying underground and living my life in the basement. My phone had long since lost its signal. I couldn't receive any news or information from the rest of the world outside, either

Then there was the third type of person, like Marcus, who stayed home, timid and cowering, instead of venturing out. However, supplies eventually ran out."I'm hungry, Marc…"After all the supplies were depleted, the four people outside my door hadn't eaten in days. Mabel kept loudly complaining about how hungry she was, but Marcus simply refused to venture outdoors to find more supplies. Two days later, Scarlet finally came knocking on my door."Vi, I was wrong the other day. I never should have scolded you because of other people. I know now that I was wrong."You haven't eaten in days, have you? I'm worried about you. Open up the door so I can check on you. Please?"I heard the sincerity in Scarlet's voice and also detected the trembling in it. She sounded very upset. What trick did she have up her sleeve this time?I couldn't see the comments on the screen because of the door between us. So, I had no idea what she was planning to do to me.However, I couldn't stay inside

A handsome young man and a teenage girl, chewing gum with a look of disdain, followed the old woman into the house. They were none other than Anne, Marcus, and Mabel.Anne then slammed the door in the others' faces, grabbed Scarlet's hand, and asked, "Lettie, how could you be so wasteful? This isn't the time to be giving your things away for free!"You're still too young to understand things. You don't have to worry about any of these household matters anymore. I'll help you take care of the supplies instead."I was speechless when I heard that. In other words, Anne was just planning to take over our supplies with a few measly words.Mabel strode into the house as if it were her own and began criticizing everything. "Your house is too small and dirty, Lettie. All of my friends have huge mansions with massive basements full of supplies and resources."She then opened the door to my room. She then folded her arms across her chest, looking completely disgusted. "This bedroom might b
