Chapter 1

Author: Bubbly Fish
It was June, early summer, yet the heat was already sweltering, the sun beating down and baking the earth beneath us.

There wasn't even a slight breeze in the air, and the stifling heat felt like we were all living in an oven.

"Apologize to him, Vi."

My older sister, Scarlet Dawson, yanked hard on my injured arm, causing a sharp, stabbing pain to shoot through my entire arm.

I clenched my fists and felt extremely frustrated.

"Why should I? I was riding my bike on the road when he bumped into me all of a sudden! He hit me first!" I protested.

Scarlet frowned, and her voice turned harsh. "How many times have I told you, Violet Dawson, that you must always be a good person and be kind to other people, no matter what?

"It doesn't matter who was at fault. You must apologize to this man first!"

Scarlet had always been like this since we were children.

It didn't matter whether I was right or wrong; she would always make me apologize first. She thought that this was the only way to show that we were virtuous people.

I took a deep breath, not wanting to argue with her any longer.

"I'm not going to make it in time for the exam. I'm leaving now."

I then broke free from her grasp and stood by the roadside for a long time before finally managing to flag down a cab.

I was finally going to be done with all my examinations after a final math paper that day.

When I opened the door, I saw a couple of other students inside the car who were also about to be late for their exams. I had, after all, accidentally flagged down a ride-sharing cab.

Just as I was about to hop in, Scarlet shoved me aside and helped the injured man who bumped into me earlier into the cab instead.

"Excuse me, sir, but can you send this man to the hospital after you've sent these students to school?"

The cab driver was a little hesitant. "The exams will be starting very soon, and she's going to be late if she doesn't go now. Shouldn't I be sending her along first?"

Scarlet shook her head and spoke in a kind, gentle voice once more. "It's fine. I'll just get another cab for her."

"It's too hot today. I don't think there'll be any other people on the road willing to stop and take her there," the cab driver said.

"It's fine. She's terrible at her studies anyway, so it doesn't matter whether she misses this paper or not," Scarlet replied. She smiled brightly at the driver, despite her words being harsh and unpleasant.

I bit my lower lip, suppressing the sudden tears welling in my eyes.

The cab driver felt sorry for me and tried to reason with Scarlet, but she kept refusing his attempts to help me. In the end, the other students in the car urged him to hurry up, or they would all be late.

It was just as those comments that suddenly popped up on screen said. Scarlet would rather help a stranger than care about her own younger sister.

I closed my eyes, fighting the stinging sensation in my eyes, and finally made my decision.

When I opened my eyes again, I felt nothing. I took out my phone and made a call.

A short while later, another cab appeared right before me.

I got into the cab decisively, leaving Scarlet behind in the sweltering heat.

I stepped out of the exam hall as soon as my final math paper ended. Finally, it was all over.

I didn't go home straight away. Instead, I headed to the villa where my uncle, Adrian Dawson, and his family lived.

It was around 5:00 pm, but the sun was still high in the sky, scorching the earth as if the heat would never go away. It took a toll on everyone on the streets, since they couldn't even walk two steps out of the door without breaking into a sweat almost immediately.

The relentless heat was unusual, but so far, no one else seemed to have noticed.

Everyone thought this was just a normal heatwave that would be over once a rain shower washed over the earth, and the temperature would drop once more.

However, I knew that this heatwave would last a very long time, as the temperature kept rising day by day.

In the future, the rivers would eventually dry up, the fields would turn bare, power systems would break down, and all industries would eventually cease to exist, plunging humanity into a brief period of disorder.

The heatwave would only get worse then, killing off more than 90% of the global population. The few lucky survivors would eventually move north toward the Northern Pole, building the world's only human base there to ensure everyone's survival.

I sneaked out of the back door of the villa with Dustin right behind me. "Did you hear the wolves howling tonight?" I asked.Dustin frowned and thought for a while. "No, I didn't, but I did see some signs of wolf activity when I came in."Realization seemingly suddenly dawned on him, and he quickly latched on. "No wonder you made barbecue for dinner tonight, with the fragrant scent and all! Were you thinking that…"Clearly, Dustin had managed to guess my plan.I nodded and hurried forward. "Let's hurry. This place isn't safe yet."Dustin quickly caught up to me.After a long, brisk walk, we finally reached a higher vantage point overlooking the entire villa."They've appeared," Dustin said softly.I looked up and noticed that plenty of yellow and amber eyes had suddenly appeared around the villa. I counted and realized that there were at least a dozen of them. The wolf pack approached the villa step by step and quickly surrounded the villa."You knew that there were wolves

Dustin was a policeman, and he was very good at physical combat. The criminal ring coveted his combat skills and abducted his sister, Daphne Lively, to coerce him into working for them.He badly wanted to save Daphne, but he didn't know where she was being held captive. That was why he had never been able to succeed. However, since I had the ability to read live comments, I knew where the thugs were holding Daphne hostage.I smiled faintly at Dustin and said, "Never mind about how I know your name. You want to rescue your sister, don't you?"Dustin lowered his head when I mentioned his sister, since it was his most vulnerable spot. "I don't know where they hid her.""But I do," I said.Dustin's eyes lit up at once. He looked at me straight in the eyes and asked urgently, "How do you know? Where is she now?""Never mind how I know it. I'll take you to her as long as you help me out of this situation."Although the temperature had dropped over the past few days, it still wasn't

"It seems like this little bitch really did stockpile a ton of supplies," one of Bobby's men said. "This is enough to feed us for days."She even has a number of generators in the villa. We can finally turn on the air conditioning and enjoy ourselves!"A skinny man went to turn on the air conditioning, and soon, a refreshing coolness filled every corner of the room. Then, a few of the men collapsed onto the couch comfortably, finally relaxing. However, Scarlet's expression was still dark as she glared angrily at me. She didn't even bother hiding the fire in her eyes anymore. "You bitch. You were enjoying yourself here while I suffered back at home. I'm very disappointed in you."I scoffed at her and told her that she deserved it.I should have destroyed her phone when I had the chance so that she would never have found me here."Boss? What should we do with this bitch here?"Bobby just glanced in my direction and nonchalantly said, "Kill her."My eyes twitched, and my heart

I looked out and saw that the ground was littered with the corpses of birds and beasts that had died from the heat.It was so hot outside that even the villa's air conditioning was beginning to lose its effectiveness. At times, I would have to set it to the lowest possible temperature to get just the slightest of coolness in the air.It seemed that I couldn't stay in the villa any longer.I quickly packed up my things and moved into the underground basement instead. It was no wonder the comments praised the basement as the best type of shelter in the heat. The moment I stepped into it, I could feel a cool draft enveloping me.It wasn't as cold as having the air-conditioning units on full blast upstairs, but at least it was better than getting baked alive in the heat.I soon began my daily routine of staying underground and living my life in the basement. My phone had long since lost its signal. I couldn't receive any news or information from the rest of the world outside, either

Then there was the third type of person, like Marcus, who stayed home, timid and cowering, instead of venturing out. However, supplies eventually ran out."I'm hungry, Marc…"After all the supplies were depleted, the four people outside my door hadn't eaten in days. Mabel kept loudly complaining about how hungry she was, but Marcus simply refused to venture outdoors to find more supplies. Two days later, Scarlet finally came knocking on my door."Vi, I was wrong the other day. I never should have scolded you because of other people. I know now that I was wrong."You haven't eaten in days, have you? I'm worried about you. Open up the door so I can check on you. Please?"I heard the sincerity in Scarlet's voice and also detected the trembling in it. She sounded very upset. What trick did she have up her sleeve this time?I couldn't see the comments on the screen because of the door between us. So, I had no idea what she was planning to do to me.However, I couldn't stay inside

A handsome young man and a teenage girl, chewing gum with a look of disdain, followed the old woman into the house. They were none other than Anne, Marcus, and Mabel.Anne then slammed the door in the others' faces, grabbed Scarlet's hand, and asked, "Lettie, how could you be so wasteful? This isn't the time to be giving your things away for free!"You're still too young to understand things. You don't have to worry about any of these household matters anymore. I'll help you take care of the supplies instead."I was speechless when I heard that. In other words, Anne was just planning to take over our supplies with a few measly words.Mabel strode into the house as if it were her own and began criticizing everything. "Your house is too small and dirty, Lettie. All of my friends have huge mansions with massive basements full of supplies and resources."She then opened the door to my room. She then folded her arms across her chest, looking completely disgusted. "This bedroom might b
