The doctor's office carried its familiar blend of lavender and antiseptic, a scent Regina had stopped noticing after months of prenatal appointments.

Alexander, however, still wrinkled his nose every time they walked through the door.

Dr. Patel smiled as she guided the ultrasound probe across Regina's stomach.

"Twenty-six weeks," she said. "Everything looks excellent. Strong heartbeat. Healthy growth. She's developing exactly the way she should."

Alexander never took his eyes off the mo

“Tell me who authorized my transfer.”Victor Moretti stared through the thick glass separating him from the prison administrator. The man on the other side didn't answer immediately. He shuffled through a folder, checked something on his monitor, then looked back at Victor.“There is no transfer.”Victor's jaw tightened.“Then why was I told to pack?”“You weren't.”“I was.”“By whom?”“That,” Victor said quietly, “is what I'm trying to find out.”The administrator closed the folder.“Mr. Moretti, your schedule hasn't changed. You have no approved transfer request.”Victor stared at him for several seconds. Something was wrong, he could feel it. For three weeks, prison had reduced his life to a collection of routines he couldn't control. Wake before sunrise, head count, breakfast, work assignment, count again, lunch, recreation, legal appointments, dinner back to count, and then lights out.The first week had been the hardest. Victor had spent years giving orders and watching people s

“You have exactly one hour to forget that you're Alexander Kingston.”Alexander looked up from his desk. ”Babe?”Regina stood in the doorway, holding two garment bags and wearing an expression that suggested she had already made every decision on his behalf.“Should I call Nathan?”“No.” Regina replied.“Adrian?”“No.”“My lawyer?”“Alexander.”He smiled. “Fine. What are you doing?”“Taking my husband somewhere.” She tossed one of the garment bags toward him.He caught it. “What's inside?”“Your clothes.”Alexander disappeared behind the dressing-room door. A moment later, Regina heard him laugh.“What’s funny?”“I think you chose this suit because you want me to look irresistible.”She smiled. “Maybe.”He stepped out, adjusting his cuffs. “Then your plan worked.”He stepped out, Regina straightened his collar and carefully fixed his tie.“There,” she murmured. He smiled. “Better?”“Yes, much better.”She leaned forward and gave him a quick kiss before stepping back. For the past few

“Job Tonight. Time-sensitive.” The message appeared at 11:07 p.m. Marcus was already awake. He sat at his desk, the glow of three monitors washing over his face as lines of code moved across the screens. He had been tracing a digital trail for nearly two hours when Andrew's message arrived. He opened it immediately. Andrew: Victor Moretti's legal team. Find out if anyone has approached him this week. Federal, private, anyone. I need to know today. Marcus leaned back. There it was. The assignment Andrew had given him earlier was no longer about Alexander. It was about Victor, and this meant that Andrew was worried. Marcus: Understood. The response arrived almost instantly. Andrew: You need to move quickly. If Victor talks, everything I've built collapses before it's finished. Marcus stared at the sentence. Andrew had never been this direct. He saved the conversation to an encrypted partition, then opened a second system. His fingers moved rapidly across the keyboard. This time

“You're not going.”Regina stopped fastening the bracelet around her wrist and slowly turned toward Alexander.“I wasn't aware I needed your permission.”“You don't.”“Then why are you standing there looking like you're about to cancel my entire day?”Alexander leaned against the bedroom doorway, arms folded.“Because your schedule is ridiculous.”“My schedule consists of a doctor's appointment and lunch.”“Exactly.”Regina stared at him.“That makes absolutely no sense.”“It does to me.”She narrowed her eyes. “You're becoming controlling again.”“Protective.”“Controlling.”“Protective.”“Alexander.”“My love.”A smile threatened the corner of her mouth.“You're impossible.”“But you're carrying my baby and it's six months along.”“There it is.”“What?”“You always bring up the baby.”His expression changed. Only slightly. Regina noticed. The question from yesterday returned before she could stop it. Alexander seemed to recognize the thought in her eyes. His voice softened. “That is

Regina knew something was wrong the moment Alexander stopped talking. They had been walking through the west wing that afternoon, discussing nursery furniture and arguing over whether their daughter needed a rocking chair when Regina suddenly slowed. The room tilted as she reached for the nearest table. Alexander caught her before her knees could give way. “Regina.” His voice changed instantly. The playful man from breakfast disappeared. His arm tightened around her, his eyes moving over her face. “Sit down.” “Alexander, I'm okay.” “Sit.” She obeyed, mostly because the room was still moving. Alexander crouched in front of her. “Look at me.” She did. “Are you dizzy?” “A little.” “Pain?” “No.” “Anything unusual?” “No.” His hand moved instinctively toward her stomach. “Our daughter?” Regina looked down. “She moved earlier.” “Earlier?” “Yes.” “When?” “Alexander…” “When did she last move?” Regina watched his face. “About twenty minutes

At 5:40 every morning, the lights snapped on. Evelyn Laurent had learned to wake a heartbeat before they did. She opened her eyes just as the fluorescent bulbs flooded the room, sparing herself the unpleasant shock of being dragged out of sleep by sudden brightness. Around her, the block stirred in fragments. Doors opened. Shoes scraped against concrete. Voices rose and fell. Somewhere down the corridor, a guard called out instructions, followed by the familiar metallic sound of locks being checked. Evelyn remained still for another moment. Three weeks had changed her relationship with mirrors. The small metal one above the sink reflected a woman she recognized but barely understood. Her hair had grown unevenly since intake. Her face looked thinner. There were faint shadows beneath her eyes that an expensive concealer could once have erased in seconds. This time, there was no concealer, tailored suit or chauffeur waiting downstairs. No one calling her Madam Laurent with carefully
