Darla's POV

The moment his mother’s words hung in the air, I felt the tension tighten like a wire around my chest.

Richard didn’t move, his gaze sharp and calculating, flicking between Xavier and me as though measuring exactly how far he could push without breaking something.

Melanie, on the other hand, leaned back casually, the smirk on her lips more dangerous than anything else in the room.

Xavier stood next to me, his hand brushing mine lightly.

It was a quiet reassurance, a silent promise that he was here and that he had my back, but even that small gesture couldn’t calm the storm that I could feel brewing.

Richard’s voice broke the silence. “So, this is how it is now? Xavier, you just jump from one woman to another without… I don’t know… thinking?”

His tone was sharp, accusatory, and I could feel my stomach twist.

Xavier straightened, his jaw tight, but his voice stayed calm. “I’m not jumping anywhere, Richard. I’m with Darla because I trust her, and that’s final.”

Melanie’s POVA woman stood a few steps away from us, near the coffee stand. Tall. Slim. Dressed in a cream-colored coat that hugged her frame effortlessly. Her hair fell in soft waves down her back, and when she laughed at something the man beside her said, it was light and familiar.Too familiar.Richard’s jaw tightened. My chest sank.“You know her,” I said quietly. It wasn’t a question. He didn’t answer immediately. His eyes stayed on her, unreadable, distant, like he’d been dragged into a memory he hadn’t planned on revisiting.“Yes,” he said finally. “I do.”Something cold slid down my spine. “Who is she?”He exhaled slowly. “Her name is Claire.”The way he said it, soft, restrained, told me everything he wasn’t saying out loud. Before I could ask more, she turned. Her eyes met Richard’s.Recognition flashed instantly across her face, followed by surprise… then a small smile.“Richard?” she called, stepping away from the man she’d been with.My stomach twisted. He hesitated for

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   The Journey

Melanie’s POVThe hum of the engine filled the car, steady and cold, like a reminder that there was no turning back.I watched the road stretch ahead of us, the city blurring past the window, but all I could really feel was the tension sitting between Richard and me. It was thick. Heavy. Unforgiving.“Are we not staying a while in the city?” I asked, breaking the silence. His hands tightened slightly on the steering wheel. “No.”Just one word. Flat. Final.“We’re going straight home.”I turned to look at him properly then. His jaw was clenched, his eyes fixed forward, dark circles faint but noticeable. He looked… worn.“You don’t look good,” I said quietly. That earned a short, humorless chuckle. “You expect me to look good after finding out you once slept with Xavier?”The words hit harder than I expected, even though I knew they were coming.“That’s what this is about?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. “Richard, that was in the past.”“Don’t,” he snapped. “Don’t try to brush

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   Lunch

Darla's POVThe apartment felt quieter than it had earlier, like the walls were holding their breath along with me.Xavier had ordered lunch as soon as we got in. Nothing fancy. Just simple food, neatly arranged on the dining table. The smell should have made me hungry, but my appetite was dull, pushed aside by the thoughts crowding my head.We sat across from each other, the clink of cutlery the only sound for a while.I watched him carefully as he ate, the calm way he moved, the way he seemed completely at ease. I envied that calm. Mine felt borrowed, fragile.“Xavier,” I said eventually, breaking the silence. He looked up. “Yeah?”I pushed my food around my plate, then met his eyes. “Why didn’t you tell me about Melanie?”His fork paused midair.I watched his face closely, waiting for defensiveness, irritation, anything. Instead, he sighed and set the fork down slowly.“It was a long time ago,” he said. “Before you. Before a lot of things.”“That doesn’t answer my question,” I sai

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   Ruined Vacation

Darla's POVXavier thanked his mom quickly, his voice low. She only nodded, telling him to take care of himself. I managed a polite goodbye of my own, even though my chest felt tight. I didn’t wait for long conversations. I just wanted to leave.Once we were outside and heading back to the car, the weight of everything hit me all at once.“This vacation is ruined,” I said quietly, staring ahead as I walked. “I just want to go back.”Xavier stopped walking. I felt him behind me before he spoke. “Darla…”I turned to face him. “I needed this trip to rest,” I continued, my voice shaking despite my effort to stay calm. “Not to sit in the same room with my ex and his wife, explaining my past like it’s on trial.”He stepped closer, his face full of regret. “I’m sorry,” he said sincerely. “I swear I didn’t know my mom would call Richard and Melanie. If I had known, I would’ve stopped it.”I searched his eyes, looking for any sign that he was lying. There was none. Just frustration and guilt.

Darla's POVThe sudden knock made my heart skip a beat. I wasn’t expecting anyone else.Xavier frowned and stepped toward the door. I followed behind him, curiosity and unease knotting together in my chest. He opened it slowly.Richard and Melanie stood there, framed by the doorway. My stomach dropped.“Mom?” Xavier asked, confusion clear in his voice. His mother’s expression was calm, almost unreadable. “I called them,” she said simply. “The only way to know for sure if whatever is between Xavier and Darla is genuine… is if I hear from all the parties involved.”I froze. My mouth went dry. I hadn’t expected this. Not here. Not now.Richard’s eyes locked onto me, sharp, intense, and a little cold. My throat tightened, and I could feel my hands trembling at my sides.Melanie, standing slightly behind him, smiled faintly but with a knowing edge. Her presence made my chest tighten even more.Xavier stepped back, letting them in, his jaw tight. “Please,” he said, guiding them into the roo
