Darla's POV

She was a step or two away, arms crossed, her eyes snapping with irritation masked by a tight smile.

I didn't comment. I simply took a half inch backward, keeping my cool.

"Richard," she said, her tone too sweet to be genuine, "I was wondering where you disappeared to. Looks like you were spending time with a friend you hadn't met in ages."

Richard released a soft sigh. "Melanie, please—

Oh no, don't 'please' me," she cut in, her eyes snapping to me. "You two seem so happy together. How long has this little reunion been going on?"

I gave her a calculated stare. "We were just talking, Melanie. About Elise."

"Of course you were," she said bitterly. "Because funerals are the perfect way to get close, huh?

Her words were poisonous, but I wouldn't bite. "You look as tight as a drum," I said softly. "Maybe you should sit down."

Her nostrils flared. "I'm fine, thank you."

Richard stepped between us, his voice firm. "That is enough, Melanie. Don't do this here.".

Melanie’s POV“I’m asking you one time," he said. "What’s it that you’re after?”A knot tightened in my throat. I opened my mouth. No sound emerged. My mind scrambled for an excuse. Finally I managed, "I was just… looking for a book.”He gave his head a tilt. "A book," he repeated, his voice dead flat. "At midnight.”I gave a half‑hearted nod. "Yes. I couldn’t sleep.”The silence that followed stretched brittle like a thread. He kept staring at me as though he could see right through every word. Then without warning he sprang to his feet. The abrupt motion caused me to flinch.“Which book?" he whispered, his voice barely rising above a hush.“What?!”“So which book were you after?”I hesitated again. "You probably wouldn’t know it. It’s another psychology book—”He edged forward his face a mask. "Funny. I don’t keep any psychology books in my study.”My pulse thrummed in my ears like a drumbeat. He was calling my bluff aware of it.I glanced away unable to lock eyes with him. "You’re

Melanie’s POV“That doesn’t mean you should catapult yourself into another man’s arms.”“I didn’t devise it " I whispered. "It simply… occurred.”Mandy let out another sigh. "That’s how it always starts.”I tucked my face into my hands. My throat. My eyes burned like coals. "I just wanted to feel something ”“Then have a word, with him " Mandy urged. "Patch things up before it’s late. You’re not doing yourself any keeping that secret. Secrets have a knack, for slipping out.”I shook my head. "No— I can’t tell him; not now. He already assumes I’m infatuated, with Darla. If he ever discovers Sam his forgiveness will be gone forever.”“You’d better watch your step " Mandy murmured. "If my memory of Richard is right he’s already keeping an eye on us.”Her words lingered, stubbornly clinging to the silence long after we’d hung up.I set the phone down. Wrapped in a hush stared at the ghostly copy of myself reflected in the mirror. My eyes glowed crimson my cheeks were washed out. I barel

Melanie’s POVI teetered on the cusp of a yes almost.. The mental snapshot of him snapping at me, alongside Darla’s hushed grin kept looping in my mind.“Not tonight," I said softly letting the words linger in the hush.He lifted his head once a nod, then moved toward the door.Just as his fingers latched onto the handle I hollered after him "You’re really going to sleep.”He lingered a moment then murmured, "Maybe I should just do it.”Then as if in a blink he vanished. The door clicked shut behind him. I lingered motionless eyes locked on the space where he’d been sitting minutes earlier. The towel began its slip. I held my position without moving. An oppressive ache of betrayal pressed into my chest throbbing with the rhythm of a wound that would not seal.He kept insisting we needed peace. What I was, after though was clarity, something I now realize may forever stay out of reach. When Richard left the room fell into an stillness. The quiet seemed to expand a blanket pressing aga

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   When Anger Learns to Speak

Melanie’s POVI barreled into the house the click of my heels, on the marble echoing through the hallway like a volley of gunshots. Every footfall only fanned the simmering rage that roiled beneath my skin. The maids greetings spilled out in a murmur but I didn't even turn my head toward them. A seething anger churned inside too fierce, for any politeness and the wound I carried dulled any desire to respond to their words.Inside the house a heavy stale breath clung, to every corner, suffocating—an echo of my mood. I raced up the staircase two steps at a time unzipping my dress with each motion. By the time I entered our bedroom the dress had already been yanked off. My other clothes were tossed haphazardly across the floor.I never bothered with the water opting for the cold instead—craving that sting to carve a path through the lingering mist of humiliation that clung to me. The water struck my skin. I pressed my clenched fists hard against the tiles replaying every detail from

  • DARLA FIN:THE HEIRESS'S WICKED REBIRTH   The act of separating.

Darla’s POVThe silence hung around us, weighty and unyielding trailing our steps, like a phantom. Not a single word was uttered, not even a sigh slipped out. The tires’ steady hum, against the road seeped into the cabin. Somehow that low thrum felt too loud, against the tense breathing hush that filled the car.Melanie sat stiffly, in the passenger seat her head angled enough to look away, from Richard. She crossed her arms like a barricade and her lips were pressed hard they had turned a ghostly pallor. Richard settled beside her his gaze fixed on the window as the passing streetlights poured a wash of light that brushed his reflected face. I sat next, to Xavier frozen in place the invisible heft of every thing bearing down on my ribs. When Xàvier at last slipped into that long curling driveway winding toward Richard’s apartment building, a muted tide of relief surged through me. The drive stretched on each mile feeling like a breath held in suspense. I was grateful, for the ins

Darla's POV Melanie repeated the word, her voice rising in mockery. "Borrowed?" She laughed, a sharp, brittle sound that echoed off the interior of the car. "You can't be serious, Darla. Are you actually trying to get Richard back?" I turned to her slowly, unruffled. “Maybe I didn’t choose my words well,” I said in a quiet voice. “Believe me, Melanie, I have no interest in Richard. You can enjoy him for all I care. She tilted her head further, and all the laughter was replaced by a venomous smile. "Excuse me, Darla," she sneered, "but you never deserved Richard in the first place." I smiled faintly, meeting her glare without flinching. "No problem," I murmured. "Since you deserve him, how's that going for you right now?" Her lips parted, but no immediate retort came. I could see the truth flicker across her face, a momentary crack in her perfect composure. The question landed where it hurt most, not because I wanted to wound her, but because she'd left me no choice. For once, M
