Lenny's pov
"I’d better not see you around here again," the warden scoffed, handing me a plastic bag containing my mortal belongings. "Won't you miss me?" I teased lightly
Wrinkles lined her face, "I mean it, Willow. Keep your head down and stay away from the reason you got sent to this hole in the first place. Especially since it didn't bother reaching out to you once."
The smile on my face shrank to a tight line.
"He was in a tight spot, and his grandma had no one else to take care of her. I'm sure he was just too ashamed to call me," I whispered, my head dipping downwards.
She looked at me, her facial muscles caught between frustration, annoyance, and the worst of all-pity.
"Men like that are always in a tight spot, that's all I've got to say to you. If you don't listen then I guess I'll be expecting my chess partner back,"
I perked up hearing that, "Ahah, so you will miss me!"
"Out of sight, Willow. Before I lock you up again!"
Not a chance.
In a second I took in a rib lift of air and almost burst into tears, freedom tasted so good.
Five long years and I'm finally out. It feels like it's been forever.
My eyes swivel around, expecting to see my man; tall, bearded, lanky, and dressed like he just rolled out of bed. I'll admit he was a mess, but he was my mess and unlike my dad, I didn't have to fish him out of the gutters in the evening, so it was a win right?
I began to sway after the first 10 minutes of waiting, 10 extra minutes past and still nothing. Did he forget? I adore my man but he'd forget his legs going out if he could.
Taking out my phone from the plastic bag, I called him.
It rang… “grmmmmmm x5”
No response the first time… Or the second, but hey like they say third times the charm.
He picked it up his deep voice lifting my mood instantly.
"Who's this?" The ground beneath felt like it parted.
I swallowed hard but it seemed the saliva seemed to ball up in my throat.
"Stop with the jokes, Rico... It’s me, the absolute love of your life, Lenny!"
The way I said it it was as if I was trying to convince either him or myself.
There was a long silence that seem to stretch on forever then I heard rustling.
"Len, how...how have you been? When did you get out?" The question sounded distant, like something you'd hear from an acquaintance and not the man you went to prison for.
Rico had accidentally run into a middle aged banker 5 years ago, which coupled with the minor misdemeanors in his past was going to send him away for a long time.
"Lenny, I don't know what to do! My Nonna will be all alone! I'm all she has left...if only I never went out that night!"
He said, falling apart. Guilt hits me like a freight train. He had gone out that night to buy me a last minute gift for our anniversary.
He was shaking, cursing at himself and that blasted night.
Seeing the man I loved crumble write in front of me the words came out before I could hold you back.
"What if we keep the cops thinking you weren't the one behind the wheel?"
In that moment he looked at me as if I was the moon the stars and everything in between.
" Lenny.. are you saying... Do you really mean...no I couldn't let you,"
He did and I don't regret it.
I'd do it all over again for the guy who pulled all nighters with me, the guy who picked every part-time job he could to make sure that I could study for midterms without worrying that the roof above our heads would be taken away, the guy who looked beyond my daddy issues and said 'I love you'.
…And now after all these years, I'd still say 'I love you' back.
"Yeah, have you moved?"
We really felt like strangers when I didn't even know where I lived.
"No, still the same old place,"
I smiled, knowing that I'd be hit with familiarity made me feel more settled.
In the blink of an eye a cab had took me to our old apartment complex. It was even more eroded than I remembered.
My heart pounded with excitement as the elevator lifted me up to our floor.
I came to the door I hadn't seen in years, expecting a warm welcome but a chill hit when I picked up that the door was open, about three inches ajar. After swallowing a deep breath I calmed myself, this isn't prison. I need to let down my guard.
Strolling in I still caught myself checking corners, I froze up in the middle of the sitting room as I heard moans coming from the kitchen.
My heart dropped… It couldn't be, to everything precious please let this be.
Feet stumbled into the kitchen and... stopped.
There was my dearest Rico.
Pants pooled to the floor and his intimates connected as far as they could into a woman with wavy platinum blonde hair as she braced herself into the counter.
He kept pummeling into her as I watched with horror pinned to the floor until his gasping release, gripping to her hips.
"Rico.." I said sounding like broken glass.
It took him to look around.
His eyes locked with mine.
"Sh*t, you weren't supposed to see this,"
He pulled the woman up, his shirt barely covering what he'd left on her behind and she grumbled, "What the hell Rico?! I haven't-"
She saw me and her eyes turned to slits.
"Whose whore are you?"
I'm going to be sick, what kind of nightmare is this.
"It's business, Sofia baby, go to the bedroom. I'll be done in a minute,"
She gave me another warning look, then she smirked deviously and wrapped her arms around him pulling him down to meet his lips with her shattering the last bit of hope that has kept me going for the last five years.
She left and Rico turned to me
"Look, Len. I can explain."
Lenny's Pov He sat on the couch, and Shadow pressed against his knee immediately. Luca stood at the kitchen entrance, looking at me."Water," I told him.Luca went to get it.I sat on the coffee table in front of Vincenzo the way I always did when I was about to look at damage. He let me. He was looking at the wall behind me with the particular expression of someone running a final check on everything that had happened in the last several hours."Tell me."He looked at me, and his voice was steady despite everything. "The session ran four hours. Dante had forty minutes of floor time. Borrelli gave him everything he asked for.""And the evidence file.""Forty-five minutes of presentation. Every document. Every transfer. Every communication record." He paused, and I watched his throat move. "Ferraro asked twelve questions. Every one was answered directly by the file.""And Bianchi."
Lenny's Pov The people at the door were maintenance. The maintenance men were real. They had building credentials and a work order for a smoke detector issue on the floor dated three days ago, and their tools in a bag were actual tools. Luca checked everything twice before he let them through.I stood at the kitchen entrance and watched him check both men. They were middle-aged and uncomfortable with the scrutiny, and they did not have the energy of people who had come to do anything other than fix a smoke detector. They were done in eight minutes, and Luca walked them to the elevator before coming back and closing the door.I looked at him."Real.""I know. I could tell after the first two minutes.""But it rattled you.""Yes.""That's reasonable. Given the last twelve hours."I went back to the table and sat down with my phone face up on the surface where I ha
Vincenzo's Pov The commission chair opened the session at nine oh four.He was a man named Borrelli, sixty three years old and twenty years in the chair position. He had the particular manner of someone who had seen enough of these sessions to find the drama around them tedious rather than interesting. He read Giovanni's declaration into the record first. It took four minutes and the room was completely silent the entire time. The only sound was his voice and the turning of pages.I watched Dante across the table while Borrelli read. His expression did not change. He had known the declaration was coming and he had prepared for it. The pleasant expression stayed exactly where he always kept it. Same half smile. Same relaxed shoulders. Same eyes that didn't match any of it.When Borrelli finished he set the declaration down with his hands resting on either side of it."The capo's formal endorsement is now part of the s
Lenny's Pov Luca was quiet for a moment with his hands resting on either side of his cup. He seemed to be choosing his words carefully."He has walked into worse rooms than this one, with less preparation. With no Giovanni declaration behind him and no confirmed captains."I nodded slowly because I knew all of that was true. "I know that.""He has walked out of all of them.""I know that too. Knowing it and sitting here are two different things."Luca met my eyes, and something in his expression softened slightly. "Yes. They are."Shadow put his head on my knee, and I put my hand on his without looking down. His fur was warm, and his breathing was steady. The simple weight of him grounded me."Tell me something about the session. Something specific. How it actually works."Luca turned his cup on the table, and the ceramic scraped softly against the wood. He seemed to appreciate the di
Lenny's Pov The morning came in grey. I was awake before the alarm, before him, before Shadow had even shifted at the foot of the bed. I lay still for a few minutes with his arm around me while his breathing stayed slow and even. He had actually slept for four solid hours at least. I listened to the ordinary sounds of the building. The elevator somewhere below. A door in the corridor. I got up carefully and made coffee. I fed Shadow, who wagged at me with his usual complete commitment to mornings. I stood at the kitchen window and looked at the street below while the coffee brewed. The session was at nine. It was currently six forty. Vincenzo came out of the bedroom at seven. He was already dressed in a dark jacket with the evidence file under his arm. He looked like a man who had made a decision a long time ago and today was simply the day it was being delivered. He looked at me. "You made coffee." "It's ready." He put the file on the table and sat down. I put a c
Lenny's Pov He was out of bed before the second hit on the door. I sat up. He already had the gun from the nightstand. He looked at me once and held up one hand flat. I stayed. He crossed to the bedroom door and opened it and went into the corridor of the apartment in three steps. I heard him at the front door. The specific sound of him checking the peephole. Then his voice. Very low. Very flat. "Step back from the door." Silence from the other side. "Step back again. Now." I heard shuffling. Then a voice I didn't recognize, male, muffled through the door. "I have a message. From Dante Moretti for his brother." "Put it under the door." "It's not that kind of message." "Then you're leaving without delivering it. Make your choice in the next ten seconds." Silence. Then footsteps moving away from the door. I heard Vincenzo on his phone immediately. Two words to Luca, the corridor. Then quiet. He came back to the bedroom doorway and looked at me. "Stay he
Lenny's POV"Explain?!" I spat out, throwing my plastic bag at him. "How the heck are you going to explain this?"He dodged—he always had surprisingly fast reflexes—and groaned, pulling up his pants and buckling swiftly."Sofia is a friend,""I'm sure she is," I seethed as he approached me. He had
Lenny’s POVGradually, the darkness that had swallowed me finally began to spit me out, taking off its tendrils as I heard sounds muddled in my ear. Soon, the fluorescent lights above me flooded my vision. After taking a minute to adjust, I swept my head from one side to another."You're alive," a
Vincenzo’s POV"I swear I'll get you the money! I wasn't running... I wouldn't dare...!"Behind the pathetic pleading filling my ears, my 8 o’clock class loomed in my mind...I have an essay I've been putting aside. The professor was a pain, but he had a backbone unlike the others in my department,
Lenny's Pov He sat on the coffee table. I think he did it deliberately so I wouldn't have to lean across, so the distance between us while I worked would be manageable. He seemed to think about things like that without making it ob
