Sophie’s eyes lowered, performing a curtsy when her turn came. The Master Luna, Annabelle, a sweet, beautiful middle-aged woman just a little older than her mother, smiled at her, though she was enveloped in a cloud of perfume. She put a hand under Sophie’s chin, and while she fought the urge to snatch it away, she turned her chin to the ceiling. "She is so pretty. Isn’t she lovely, dear?" The woman appealed to her husband, Master Alpha Alfonso. After raising a brow in the presence of his two sons, Luna Annabelle accepted the glass of champagne that had been offered to her. "Such lovely cheekbones, my dear... I like you already, Sophie." "Enough with that darling, leave the girl alone," the Master Alpha responded, not looking at Sophie or her cheekbones or, to her relief, her child-bearing hips, which were probably the only attribute in his future daughter-in-law that interested him but staring at the glass of champagne he held. Cain flushed from the neck up, but after a moment, he gave a careless shrug. "It’s your term against Roxanne’s." His tone made it clear that Sophie’s words meant nothing. Alpha Alfonso’s wife, Luna Annabelle, reached out and laid her hand over her husband’s. "Not the time, Alfonso," she murmured softly. "Relax and enjoy the food, dear." The effort to respond to her warning glance deepened the unhealthy ruddiness, and another couple of shades before the table was engulfed in a painfully awkward silence, broken after a few uncomfortable moments by Luna Ally. "Sophie, I thought you were wearing your necklace earlier?" Sophie shook her head as the tightness in her chest deepened. She strained to keep her brain from spinning with righteous rage. She inhaled deeply and slowly exhaled with flaring nostrils. In her eyes, the Master Alpha was a bad excuse for a parent—he was a bully! A jerk. Sophie realised she was back in the seer's vision, perhaps three or four weeks from now. This was Landon's mind, and she shivered at the prospect of undoing what had happened the first time she went inside his head. After all, being held as a prisoner for alleged crimes she did not commit was not a reason to consider taking a vacation. "I'm sorry for the mess, Sophie," Alpha Landon grumbled behind her. It had been days since she had been locked up in the prison cell and the failed escape attempt with Sage, even before Landon had left with Roxanne. "I understand, but are you really sure that Roxanne is your true mate? I mean, I know, what we have isn't—um, love, but—really? With Roxanne?" "Why the doubt?" Landon asked. "Because I thought, um, you like my sister?" "That’s true," he said, acting as though her clenched response were actually wisdom and not desperation.
