*Chapter Thirteen

Midnight.

The Ironclaw mansion was quiet for the first time in a week. No war drums. No shouting. Just the sound of rain on the roof and Victor’s breathing.

Bad breathing.

I sat next to his bed and watched the black veins crawl up his neck. They’d stopped after the coronation, but they hadn’t gone away. The Moon Mirror was on the table beside us. Whole. Silent. Useless.

“Stop staring at me like I’m already dead,” Victor said without opening his eyes.

“I’m not—”

  • DESTINED MATE    The Ritual Gone Wrong

*Chapter fourteen: The Priest ruins smelled like old blood and rain. Broken pillars. Cracked altars. And in the center, a circle carved into the stone with symbols I didn’t recognize. Brandon was already there. He’d drawn the circle. He’d laid out the candles. The Moon Mirror sat in the middle, glowing faintly. “You came,” he said when he saw us. “We came,” Victor answered. He looked worse in the daylight. The black had reached his eye. Brandon explained the ritual while he worked. “We stand in the triangle. Mirror in the center. The volunteer cuts their palm and bleeds onto the Mirror. Then we all say the words. The curse transfers.” “Which words?” I asked. “Words my mother taught me.” He handed me a piece of paper. Victor took it from me and read it. His face went hard. “This is a binding spell. Not a transfer.” “It’s both,” Brandon said. “The curse moves, and the new vessel is bound to protect the Alpha King for life.” He looked at me. “Are you sure, Layla?”

If I go, you need to promise me something.” “Don’t.” “Promise me you’ll live. You’ll rule. You won’t let Elliot or Hannah win.” I squeezed his hand until my knuckles went white. “I promise I won’t let you go.” A knock. Soft. Zoe poked her head in. “Alpha. There’s someone at the gate. Alone. No weapons.” “Who?” Victor sat up immediately. Too fast. He winced. “Brandon.” My stomach drop

  • DESTINED MATE    Coronation or Funeral

Chapter Twelve We didn’t sleep for 3 days. Victor was getting worse. By day 2 the black veins reached his jaw. By day 3 they were crawling up his cheek like spider webs. The healers couldn’t do anything. The Elders wouldn’t look at him. “Alpha,” Elder Marcus said on the morning of the full moon. “The packs are here. All 13. They’re demanding the ceremony start at moonrise. Or they attack.” Victor was sitting in his throne room. Shirtless. The black was ugly against his skin. But his eyes were still gold. Still sharp. “Then we start at moonrise,” he said. I was standing next to his throne. The Moon Mirror was on a pillow between us. Whole. Quiet. Waiting. “Victor,” I said when the Elder left. “You don’t have to do this. We can run. We can find another way—” “There is no other way,” he cut me off. He grabbed my hand. His skin was cold. “Layla. If I die tonight, you run. You take Zoe and you run to the human lands. You never come back.” “I’m not leaving you.”

  • DESTINED MATE    The blood pact

*Chapter eleven. The tent exploded. Not with fire. With sound. My scream, Victor’s roar, and the sound of 10 wolves drawing weapons all at once. Brandon stood in the doorway, sword in hand. Behind him, the entire Black Pack camp was waking up. Horns. Shouts. The thunder of paws hitting dirt. And I was standing there holding the other half of the Moon Mirror like an idiot.“Layla. Put it down,” Brandon said. His voice was flat. Dead. The Brandon I knew would have been begging. This Brandon looked like a stranger. “Give it to me. I can end this without anyone else dying.”Victor moved before I could breathe. He was fast even while cursed. One second he was behind me, the next he was between me and Brandon, a blade in his hand that I’d never seen before. Silver. Runic. “Touch her,” Victor said, “and I’ll show you what an Alpha King does to traitors.”Brandon didn’t flinch. “You’re already dying, Victor. Can’t you feel it? The curse is in your heart. You have maybe 2 days.” He

  • DESTINED MATE    The moon mirror

Chapter TEN: The door to Victor’s room slammed shut and the wards flared to life. Silver light ran across the wood, sealing us in. Then he collapsed. "Victor!" I caught him before his head hit the floor. He was heavy. So much heavier than he looked. His body was burning up through his shirt, and the black veins from the Moon Mirror shard were crawling up his neck, toward his heart. "Get... off me," he gritted out, trying to push me away. His hazel eyes were clouded with pain. "The curse... it’s contagious if you touch it too long." "I don’t care," I snapped, and dragged him to the bed. "ZOE!" She burst in 2 seconds later, already holding bandages and a silver dagger. "Alpha, the healers said—" "The healers can’t help," Victor cut her off. Blood was at the corner of his mouth. "It’s old magic. Priest magic. Only the Moon Mirror can stop it." I pressed both hands to his chest. White light poured out of me, the same light that broke the dual bond. It was warm. It was mine

  • DESTINED MATE    The Alpha King's Claim

*Chapter Nine: The courtyard was silent. Only the sound of rain hitting stone and three people breathing. Victor was on one knee, black blood still dripping from the wound where the shard had been. Brandon was slumped against a pillar, staring at his hands like he didn’t recognize them. The tug between us was gone. I broke it. Hannah was screaming, clutching the broken pieces of the Moon Mirror. "You ruined it! The curse was supposed to kill one of them!" Alpha Elliot raised his sword. "Then we kill her the old way." Before he could move, Victor stood. Slowly. Painfully. But he stood. His molten gold eyes weren’t on his uncle. They weren’t on Hannah. They were on me. He walked through the blood and smoke until he was right in front of me. Rain ran down his face. He looked wrecked. Cursed. And still the most dangerous man in the room. "Enough," Victor said. His voice shook the walls. "This ends now." He turned to the 13 packs watching from the gates. To
