"Listen, I understand the timeline is tight. If you can send me those documents by tomorrow morning, I'll have them reviewed before noon." I held the phone between my shoulder and ear, my fingers flying across the keyboard. "The precedents we discussed are solid. I just need to cross-reference a few things."

"Of course. I'll have them to you by eight."

"Perfect. Thank you ."

I ended the call and set the phone down on the desk, rubbing my temples with both hands.

3 YEARS LATERAURORA "Listen, I understand the timeline is tight. If you can send me those documents by tomorrow morning, I'll have them reviewed before noon." I held the phone between my shoulder and ear, my fingers flying across the keyboard. "The precedents we discussed are solid. I just need to cross-reference a few things.""Of course. I'll have them to you by eight.""Perfect. Thank you ."I ended the call and set the phone down on the desk, rubbing my temples with both hands. The client on the other end has been nice enough, but the case was complicated and the deadlines were tight and I could already feel the familiar tension building in my shoulders. I leaned back in my chair and stared at the ceiling for a moment, letting myself breathe.I've come so far since Sacramento happened to me. With nothing but a suitcase and an unborn baby, there were dreams I wasn't sure I was ever going to achieve. Last year I got a job as a legal virtual assistant for a small firm, taking on c

ELENAI woke up to the smell of bacon and coffee drifting through the apartment. For a moment I forgot where I was, my eyes blinking against the pale morning light filtering through the curtains. I could hear voices from the kitchen, Lydia's laugh and Mrs. Hart's gentle yet angry voice. I turned my head and looked at Arya. She was awake, staring up at the ceiling with this focus like something was there, her little hands waving in the air like she was conducting an invisible orchestra. I followed her gaze but there was nothing there. I smiled and reached over, my fingers brushing against her cheek."Morning, baby."She turned her head toward me and cooed.I sat up slowly, my body heavy with exhaustion. My flight was at eleven which means I had a few hours. I swung my legs over the side of the bed and stood up, the cold wooden floor making my feet tingle.I walked into the kitchen and found Mrs. Hart at the stove, a pan of bacon sizzling in front of her. Lydia was at the table, a cup

AURORAThe water soaked through my coat’s arm.I took a deep breath and walked up the path, the gravel crunching under my feet.Lydia pushed the door and stepped inside. The house was so cold and silent, the air thick with dust and webs. I wonder how Lydia was about to work around it.We bumped into Lydia's parents inside, her mother was arranging flowers on the coffee table, a mix of white and pale pink roses that must have cost a fortune. Her father was setting up a small display of photos on the mantle, my parents' faces smiling out from behind the glass frames."You called your parents," I asked in a low voice"Yep. I mean, your mom is literally her best friend. She wanted to hold it separately but the more the merrier, I thought."I lifted

AURORA I woke up to the sound of rain tapping against the window. The room was dark, the curtains drawn, the only light a thin gray line creeping through the gap. I lay there for a moment, my body heavy with sleep, and my mind slow to catch up. This was it.Today was the day.I turned my head and looked at Arya, she was asleep beside me, her tiny body curled into a ball, her hand resting on my arm. I watched her for a long moment, I reached out playing with her hair as her chest rose and fell. She looked so peaceful, so unaware of the problems around her, or the turmoil deep inside me, so completely trusting in the world around her. I gently touched her cheek, feeling the warmth of her skin beneath my fingers.I slipped out of bed and walked to the window. The rain was falling steadily, soaking the streets, and turning the world gray and muted.I wonder if Damian knew I was back. If he was even still alive. What would he do if he found out I was in Sacramento? His engagement was t

AURORA A flight attendant's voice came over the intercom. "Welcome aboard Flight 247 to Sacramento. Please stow all carry-on items in the overhead compartments or under the seat in front of you. We ask that you turn off all electronic devices or set them to airplane mode. We'll be taking off shortly."I pulled out my phone and switched it to airplane mode. The screen went dark, and I tucked it into my bag and leaned back against the seat. The flight attendant continued. "Please take a moment to review the safety card in the seat pocket in front of you. In the event of an emergency, oxygen masks will drop from the overhead compartment. Please secure your own mask before assisting others."I pulled out the safety card and stared at it, skimming through the words. I shoved it back in the pocket once I was done. The plane started to move, taxiing slowly toward the runway. The engines grew louder, the vibration stronger."Flight attendants, prepare for takeoff."The plane picked up speed

AURORA The morning of the second arrived faster than I expected.I woke up to the sound of Arya cooing in her crib, her little hands reaching up toward the mobile spinning above her. I lay there for a moment, watching her play with a small smile on my face.Today was the day I would go back to Sacramento. Today was the day I would face everything I've been running from. I got up slowly, my body heavy with exhaustion, and lifted Arya out of her crib. She smiled at me, her gummy grin lighting up her face. I pressed a kiss to her forehead and held her close.“Are you ready for your first flight?”She cooked as if she understood what I was saying.I exhaled and went ahead to bathe her, I fed her while she was still naked just wrapped in her blanket, cleaned her up one more time and then dressed her in a soft yellow onesie. I left a squishy stitch toy with her to play with while I also hurry to freshen up. I dressed myself in a comfortable fit, something that was easy to travel in. I
