MONIQUE

Ryan walked in like a man returning to his kingdom, chin high, shoulders squared, arrogance dripping off him like cologne. He didn’t even glance around the room before settling into the chair like it was a throne meant just for him.

That smile, smug and infuriating, spread across his face as his eyes landed on me.

“Today was a very good day,” he said, leaning back with casual ease. “I just hope that as we finish our talk today, you’re not going to mess it up for me.”

My temper snapped before I could stop myself.

“Did you put me in here just to starve me? To let me die of dehydration and hunger?”

“Wow,” he said, almost amused.

“Yes, wow!” I shot back. “I haven’t eaten anything. I haven’t drunk anything the whole day. And you know I’m taking meds. Why the hell am I even here if you can’t take care of me?”

He tilted his head slightly, feigning confusion. “What’s that sound?”

“What sound?” I frowned, trying to listen, but there was nothing.

“That one,” he said, tapping his ear, hi

The BennettsA few minutes later, Mr Bennett arrived and assessed the situation. “So what do we do about this?” he asked. The minute he arrived, he went over to see both Monique and her aunt, and now the three of them formed a circle so they could discuss.“I have a plan,” Mrs Bennett began.Mr Bennett answered, “We should just kill them and get rid of them. Doesn't it mean that if she dies, all her money goes to you? You’re her husband, and she has no heir.” His attention went towards Ryan. “We should finish her off.”Ryan shook his head. “I'm not sure….. I don't know what that contract entails. And given that Mr Smith is not really a fan of me, I am unsure. I just—I want this to be clean and sweet. I don't want to get this through blood and make a lot of noise.”“As if you're afraid of a little blood,” Mr. Bennett scoffed.Mrs Bennett stared at her husband. “He's right. We do not need to make people suspicious. We do not need to get this by using a lot of strength and force; it wou

THE BENNETS A few weeks ago. Ryan. The minute Ryan saw Monique and her aunt step into his office, he knew something was wrong. Terribly wrong. His chest tightened, and before his mind fully caught up, he was already moving. He stormed out of the office, down the hallway, and straight towards his car. He didn’t even bother telling his assistant where he was going. He got into his car and drove—fast. There was no universe where Monique was simply checking out his office. No. He knew her. He knew her tells. Her silences. The tension in her jaw, the way her eyes moved when she was hiding something. Something was going on, and he needed to get home. He needed to get there first. Because he knew exactly what she was searching for. And he knew what she was planning to do next. She was going to leave. He had seen it in her eyes this morning. The way she flinched. The way she looked at him, not with fear that kept her in place like before but with fear that made her move. He had hoped

MONIQUEI froze. My fingers tightened around my father's letter.“What do you mean?”“I mean, Ryan doesn’t have your aunt, not anymore,” he repeated, more slowly this time.I stared at him, not breathing.“Marcus… Please explain what’s going on.”He took a breath, one hand coming up to gently touch my arm as if grounding me.“I’ll tell you everything,” he said. “But listen, when you told me on the phone you couldn’t leave because of your aunt, I went to find her. I looked everywhere and made sure to find her. She’s safe. She’s at my place right now.”My chest rose and fell quickly. My vision blurred.“She’s safe, Monique,” he whispered. “She just wants to know you’re okay. And I will take you to her. You don’t have to go back to Ryan.”My mouth opened—no words came out.“And before you say anything,” he continued, stepping closer, “I’m not telling you this to convince you to go anywhere with me. When you see her, when you’re sure she’s safe, you can go wherever you want. I’ll take you

MONIQUEMr. Smith slid the envelope toward me slowly. No one spoke.I couldn’t even bring myself to touch it.My name. Written in my father’s handwriting. Right there on the front. And I just couldn’t take it anymore.I cried.“I’m so sorry, my child…” Mr. Smith said as he stood up from his seat, reaching out as if to comfort me.But Ryan immediately raised his hand.“She is my wife. I will take care of her,” he said, trying to pull me toward him, to hold me, to pretend-comfort me, like he had any right. But the last thing I wanted was Ryan’s false comfort. He was one of the reasons I was crying so hard. And I didn’t even think, didn’t hesitate as I quickly stood, snatched the letter from the table, and ran out of the room.I heard Ryan’s voice calling after me.“Monique!”I heard the footsteps behind me. I heard shouting—Ryan’s voice, Mr. Smith’s voice, all mixing together. But I didn’t know what they were saying. I didn’t even know where I was going.I was just running.I reached th

MONIQUERyan’s fingers tightened on my thigh.“No, it’s okay. You can just… say whatever it is in front of Ryan,” I finally muttered.I was facing Mr. Smith, but I still couldn’t look him in the eye. My gaze stayed locked on the polished table surface, my fingers curling tightly together in my lap. My voice felt thin, strangled. But it came out. And that was enough for Ryan.Mr. Smith took a deep breath, long, controlled, and measured.“Okay,” he said quietly. “If that’s what the two of you have agreed.”He paused a moment, then continued, “I just need to ask something from my secretary. I told her to prepare the documents.... I’ll go check that everything is in order.”He stood up and walked toward the door. The second the door shut, Ryan was on me.“What are you trying to do?” he hissed, leaning in close. “Trying to show him there’s something going on here? Huh? Is that it?”“No,” I answered quickly, my voice small. He scoffed, shaking his head. “I hate that man. He’s been a thorn i

MONIQUEThis was news to me. I had absolutely no idea what Mr. Smith was talking about.I turned toward Ryan slowly, my eyes wide.“You… you were going to get charged?”Ryan didn’t look at me. He kept his eyes fixed on Mr. Smith instead. His jaw was clenched so tightly I could see the muscles pulsing beneath his skin.“That’s ancient history,” Ryan said. “It’s irrelevant.”“It’s very relevant,” Mr. Smith replied calmly, leaning back in his chair. “Especially when the matter at hand concerns ownership, legal autonomy, and the safety of my client.”Ryan let out a short, cold laugh.“Your client?” he repeated. “She is not any client of yours, Mr. Smith. You were her parents’ lawyer. Not hers.”He glanced at me, then back at Mr. Smith, as if I were furniture in the room.“She’s my wife. She and I are one,” Ryan continued. “And I speak on her behalf. We’re only here because she personally needs to sign, and you refused to let me bring the documents to her myself.... So just put the papers
