MONIQUE

I wasn’t sure whether Mr Smith's words were meant as reassurance or a warning.

I nodded, but something unsettled me. The ease with which Mr Smith had shifted, from the man who’d been offended by my hesitation to this one, calm and prepared for resistance, felt deliberate. As if he had expected this moment all along.

When we were finished, he collected the documents. “I’ll have my secretary redo the changes.”

He typed on his desk before he called her in, handed over the pages, and she left the office with them.

“You’re learning quickly,” he said, turning towards me. “Most clients don’t realise how much power is exercised quietly, in conversations they never hear.”

“That’s exactly why I want to hear about them,” I replied.

I couldn’t read his expression. I couldn’t tell whether it was approval or calculation.

He leaned back, folding his hands, mirroring his earlier posture. “You’re right to be careful, Monique. Power should never exist without visibility.”

The words were perfect

MONIQUEI wasn’t sure whether Mr Smith's words were meant as reassurance or a warning.I nodded, but something unsettled me. MONIQUEAs I went over the documents, Mr Smith sat back, hands folded neatly, his eyes on me, a soft smile playing on his lips.“Take all the time you need, honey. There’s no rush. I want you to feel completely comfortable before you sign anything.”I nodded, keeping my voice steady. “I’m sorry about this. I need to make sure I understand everything.”“Of course,” Mr Smith answered, his tone gentle. “But, my dear, that’s why no one should ever hand over complete authority blindly. I’m sure you don’t want to repeat the same mistake twice. Your father would want me to advise you the same thing.”I paused at that. I noted the slight emphasis on his words. He was reminding me that I had made a mistake before and that he had been trusted by my father. It raised a small alarm inside me.“Monique,” my aunt said, softly touching my hand, “just breathe through it. Trust your instincts. You’re in control now.”I took a shaky breath, smiling at both of them, and continued reading, slipping throu

MONIQUEThen Mr Smith turns to me and hugs me too. It’s awkward and hesitant, but it happens.“Welcome, welcome,” he says warmly. “Please, sit down.”He gestures toward the sofas in his office instead of having us sit across from him at his desk.He immediately calls his secretary in. “What would you like to have?” she asks sweetly.“Coffee,” my aunt says.“Water,” I say.“Water for me as well,” Mr Smith adds.As we wait, my aunt and Mr Smith start talking about my mom and my dad, about how fun those times used to be. Most of what they talk about are memories I was too young to remember.I sit there quietly, listening Anyway.Mr Smith smiled softly as he listened to my aunt, nodding along, his eyes warm with nostalgia.“Your father had a way of filling a room,” he said. “Even when he wasn’t speaking, you knew he was there.”“And her mother,” my aunt added with a small laugh that didn’t quite hide the ache behind it. “Always laughing. Always arguing with him about something.”I smiled

  • DIVORCED MORNING AND REMARRIED TO HIS BROTHER BY NIGHT   Every Decision I Made

MONIQUEI looked at her, really looked at Aunt Jane, and for the first time, I didn’t just see the woman who had left. I saw someone who had been pushed out. Someone who had been made to feel unnecessary, unwanted, replaceable. Just like I had.“I wish you had fought harder,” I admitted softly. “But I also know how overwhelming and relentless the Bennetts are. They didn’t just surround me. They erased everyone else.”She reached for my hand again, her grip firm this time. Grounding.“I should have fought harder,” she said. “That part is on me. But you need to understand something, Monique. You didn’t choose this because you were weak. You chose it because you were grieving. Because you were alone. And because they knew exactly how to take advantage of that.”My chest tightened. “I feel like every decision I made back then was wrong.”“Of course you do,” she replied gently. “Because you’re finally seeing clearly. That doesn’t mean you were stupid. It means you survived long enough to w

MONIQUEMy Aunt kept eye contact before continuing."I thought if you really needed me, if you really wanted me in your life, you would have reached out to me, Monique, right? Because you were a whole person, a whole adult with your own heart and your own head. I thought you would look for your aunt, the only real relative you had left.... But you didn’t." He says accusingly before she continues."And years went by. Year after year. And you never reached out.... I thought you were happy. I would sometimes see you in magazines, when the two of you would go out, and you looked happy. How would I have known that they had put you in their cult of family?"The only thing I could do was cry.“I am sorry, Monique, okay? I am so sorry for letting you down. I let all of you down... I have let down your mother. I have let down your father. And I'm just… I'm so sorry.”I didn’t answer her right away as we were both in tears. After everything she had just said, it felt like there was too much ang

MONIQUEI guess we were doing this, I had to tell her the truth“I know I’m not giving him power of attorney like I did Ryan, but it feels the same. Different language, same control.”She frowned. “Your father let him handle all his legal matters too, Monique.”“I know. But I don’t want that. I want him to handle my inheritance and the divorce. If I need him for something else, I’ll call him. I’ll pay him monthly to be my backup lawyer. I just don’t want someone having every part of my life at the tip of their fingers.”That was my problem with the document. My aunt went quiet for a moment after that. She leaned back in her chair, the paper resting in her hand, and studied me for a second before she asked,“Does this have to do with Marcus?”“What?” I asked with a frown. How did she get to Marcus? I wondered.“What do you mean?” I asked again.“Is Marcus the one who told you not to give Mr Smith all these powers? Is that it? Did he tell you this was too much? Did he put it in your hea
