CELESTE POV
The first time I saw my husband cheating on me was on I*******m.
Not in person, not even through a rumour, but via a post his secretary had ‘mistakenly’ tagged me in.
“Some nights are too perfect to share with others,” I read the caption aloud.
11:59 pm.
In sixty seconds, my first wedding anniversary would officially be a corpse. I sat alone in the centre of a restaurant I’d paid five figures to empty, staring at a chair that had been vacant for four hours. The boy band I’d hired had packed up their instruments an hour ago, their pitying glances stinging worse than the cold champagne in my glass.
I couldn’t even smell him coming. Any other Luna would have known her mate was blocks away, but me? I was Harrington's defect. I couldn’t smell a lie even if it was pressed against my nose.
“Ma’am,” the waitress’s voice was laced with unbearable clarity. “We’re closing.”
“I was just leaving,” I said, forcing a smile that felt like it was cracking my face in two. My eyes darted to the gifts that were perfectly wrapped on the table. “Keep the gifts. Share them with the staff. I’m sure they’ll make better use of them.”
The night air hit me like a slap the second I stepped out. Salt water stung my lips as I wiped away my tears. One year of marriage, and I was a punchline. I hadn’t even asked for a kingdom, just for him to show up.
Inside my car, my phone screamed with notifications. Hilary, my best friend, was blowing up my phone screen. “Stop having sex and tell me everything!”
“Make cute babies!”
A sob caught in my chest. I opened the I*******m app again, my fingers trembling. I didn’t need to zoom in this time. I knew those shoulders. I knew the way his hair curled at the nape of his neck, but it was the shirt that broke me. A custom black silk I’d designed for his birthday, with D.B. stitched in silver on the cuff. The same cuff is now draped over Avery’s shoulder.
I pulled up his location from iMessage. I had expected him to be in the office. Maybe a hotel, not this.
“Take me to Noir 44,” I choked out.
The driver hesitated. “Ma’am, that club is…”
“Now.”
The second we hit the driveway, I was out. My steps quickened as I made my way to the club, but the bouncer stopped me before I could make it past the entrance.
“You can’t go in dressed like… that,” he said, eyeing my dress like I was a lost Victorian doll. I didn’t argue, I just flashed a stack of cash.
Noir 44 wasn’t a place for ‘decent’ outings. That was common knowledge.
“I’m sure we don’t want the Harrington heiress causing a scene on the sidewalk, do we?”
He stepped aside.
A cold sweat ran down my spine the moment I stepped in. Girls walked around barely covering any part of their bodies, entertaining greedy old farts who probably have children their age at home.
Bile rushed to my throat, as I searched the room.
“Would you like me to show you a nice time?” a man dressed in absolutely nothing but a sheer pair of pants thick enough to cover only his balls spoke beside me.
A scream tore out of my throat, earning me a mocking laugh from the people watching.
What the hell was Declan doing in a place like this? I spotted one of Declan’s lapdogs disappearing into a VIP suite and I followed him. I pushed the door open slightly, and there he was.
Declan sat at the centre of the room like a King. Avery was at his feet, her hands wandering recklessly, and he didn’t bother to stop her.
I slapped a hand across my mouth, as tears stung my vision.
She kissed his cheeks, and he pulled her closer, deepening the kiss while their friends cheered them on.
“What are you going to tell that boring wife of yours?” one of his friends barked, followed by a roar of laughter.
“Isn’t today your wedding anniversary? She’s probably home, crying for her sweet husband.”
“I’ll just tell her I got caught up with work,” his voice was dismissive, colder than the sweet one that warms up my heart every time I hear him speak. He yanked Avery up by her neck, his thumb stroking her throat. “A little apology, and I’ll have her wrapped around my fingers all over again.”
He leaned in, whispering loud enough for the room to hear. “I’m just waiting for my father to pass. He’s the only one who wanted this marriage. I’m filing for divorce the second he takes his last breath.”
I staggered backwards, lips quivering as the room began to shrink.
Who else knew about this?
Every time I went to his office to deliver lunch myself— did they wait for me to leave before laughing at how stupid I was? Was he ever going to tell me that he fell for someone new?
The more I thought about it, the heavier my chest felt. Tears streamed down my face and my heart raced so fast it felt like it was going to explode. I clutched hard at my chest, struggling to inhale a breath, but it felt like something was stuck in my lungs, blocking the air.
I had given up my dreams and my dignity to be a shadow for a man who was just waiting for me to disappear.
I didn’t stay to watch the rest. I ran.
I hit the sidewalk. The neon lights of the club are blurring the faint colours of red and blue. My heart raced so fast it felt like it was going to shatter against my rib. My legs gave out before I reached the car. I blinked once, twice, trying to understand what was happening, when a sharp pain shot through my veins.
“Happy anniversary,” I muttered to myself before everything went black.
CELESTE The building was empty by the time I arrived. It was not much of a surprise since no one comes to work during the weekend unless we have an event or something really important and we couldn't wait until Monday.I made my way to my father's office and I could hear muffled sounds down the hallway. He seemed to be having a heated conversation with someone but before I could pay attention to what they were talking about, the door swung open and Tristan stepped out.He forced out a smile that didn't reach his eyes as he walked past me. I looked back to see what the attitude was about. Tristan had been my father's secretary for as long as I could remember, and he was more like a big brother to me, so seeing his reaction immediately raised my suspicions.I pushed the door open to see my father holding a Zoom meeting. He lifted his finger, informing me to hold on before ending the meeting shortly after.“What is going on? I thought something had happened when you told me to come imme
CELESTEI hadn't slept once over the past few days. Every time I closed my eyes, all I saw were images of Caspian and me, fucking in his office. If anyone had told me that a day would come when I'd stoop so low, I'd laugh in their face and tell them it was impossible.I wanted to blame my wolf for constantly giving me mixed feelings. I wanted to blame him too, but deep down, I knew I couldn't blame anyone but myself. The worst part was how my body had been aching for his touch ever since. I could still feel his imprint all over me and the shame wouldn't even allow me to look at myself in the mirror.“Are you listening to me?” Hilary snapped her fingers in my face, pulling me back to reality.“Huh? Yes. I mean—”She narrowed her eyes and I exhaled sharply. “Something is bothering you,” she said as a matter of fact. “You've been acting so weird since the day we went to the club with Simon. Did something happen? I heard that little whore showed up. Is this about Declan, then?”I shook m
CELESTE’S POV.With my blood still boiling through my veins, I stepped into Caspian’s sleek corner office, the city skyline glittering behind the floor-to-ceiling windows. I swallowed, my heart hammering hard against my ribs even though I kept my chin high, and my head up.I tried not to think about it, but thinking about the fact that this was the first time we’d be alone since those explosive arguments weeks ago where sharp words had been exchanged, lingering stares, and things left unsaid.“Business partners don’t play childish games, Celeste. Fix it.” My father’s voice rang in my head, and even though I’d tried to maneuver my way out of the situation, he had insisted that I handle it personally.I really didn’t want to be here, the last thing I wanted to do was face that prick, but with my father breathing down my neck, and business that needed to be discussed, I knew I couldn’t possibly escape this meeting. My eyes met Caspian, he sat behind his massive mahogany desk, dark suit j
CELESTE It's been a long day and I regretted taking a few days off work after the whole poisoning thing. No one else knew about it since I had just taken a sick leave and Caspian hadn't reached out to me since then.I knew I shouldn't have spoken to him the way I did because he was just worried about me but there was something about his voice that pushed me to the edge. Why would he even think Hilary would want to harm me? And asking about Simon out of nowhere just felt somehow too.Even though we've only known him recently, that didn't mean I'd start suspecting him for what happened after all, he had no reason to harm me.A part of me felt like he spoke to me in that manner because of what happened between us and I couldn't help but snap back at him.Neither of us has spoken about what happened at the club and I don't know which was worse. Pretending it never happened or avoiding each other right after having shared that intimate moment.I shoved the thought away before it could lin
CELESTE It's been a little over a day and I've been in bed. It was getting a little uncomfortable since I wasn't used to being bedridden, especially not in the hospital. My fingers twirled over the bright screen of my mobile phone as I checked through the news feed hoping to pass the time. The door opened and Hilary walked inside. I wasn't expecting her to come yet because the last time we spoke, she told me she was thirty minutes away. She took one look at me and her whole face crumpled for just a second before she controlled it. "You're awake," she said quickly.I pushed myself upright against the pillows. My arms felt a bit weak from lying on my side for a long time. The hospital bed was uncomfortable but I managed it. "You didn't have to come," I said, setting my phone aside. "Don't say that to me right now." She said, dropping her purse while she crossed to the chair beside the bed, dropping into it and leaning forward."What really happened?” She asked curiously. “I heard yo
CASPIAN Poisoned. The word echoed in my head like a broken disk. Celeste had been poisoned. My blood ran cold and for a terrifying second, I forgot how to breathe. Who poisoned her? Why would they go after her? What was their sick intention? My body shook violently as I stared at her pale skin. She looked devastatingly fragile lying on the hospital bed. A wave of anxiety rushed through me, choking my lungs as different thoughts invaded my mind. What if I hadn't called her tonight? What if this had happened while I was stubbornly trying to give her space after our argument? Who would have protected her then? The thought of something happening to her sent chills down my spine. My jaw clenched as I found my voice.“Are you sure you're not mistaken?” My voice cracked with emotions. “It could be just severe food poisoning. Do you want to run another test on her for confirmation?” “Of course not,” the doctor muttered, stepping back slightly and a knot tightened in my stomach. “I'd ha

CELESTE My stomach tightened at the sight of the home wrecker who ruined my marriage even though I blamed myself for marrying the dog. The image of her stepping her heels on my hand as she walked towards Declan to kiss him flashed before my eyes and I wanted to kill the bitch for it.“How did you
CELESTE Hilary rampaged through my closet to pick a dress for me while I sat on the bed. I didn’t plan on going anywhere tonight but I couldn't bring myself to trust that man so I decided to go with her just to ensure she was okay.Maybe I was overreacting once again but either way, things were go
CELESTE Work has been awfully draining for the past few days. I shuffle between business meetings and attending to paperwork, and I rarely get enough rest.“Ma'am,” Clara knocked at the door to gain my attention as she stepped into the room and I let out a sigh. “Please tell me I don't have anoth
