Alexander's POV

“Let's go,” I said to the guards that stood around the entrance of the hotel.

They all scattered around, getting into the various cars that made up the convoy that had come for me. One of the guards stood at the door of mine, holding it open until I got in.

The car door closed with a soft thump, sealing me inside the cool, climate-controlled interior of the Maybach. The sound was muted and expensive, the kind of quiet that only came with hand-stitched leather and layers of Ger

  • DOUBLE HEIR ; A LOVE IN DISGUISE    THE ESTATE

ALEXANDER'S POV I arrived at the estate with the twins in the back seat, the morning sun sliding through the windows and warming their cheeks. The car pulled up smoothly in front of the grand entrance, tires crunching softly on the gravel driveway. Tall iron gates swung open ahead of us, revealing a long stretch of manicured lawns and fountains catching the light. They both pressed their faces against the windows, breath fogging up the glass in little circles. Their eyes were wide with wonder, like they’d never seen anything bigger than their apartment block.“Wow!” Liam shouted, bouncing in his booster seat. “It’s so big! Like a castle!” His voice cracked with excitement, and he turned to his sister, grabbing her sleeve. “Lila, do you think there are knights inside? Or secret rooms?”She didn’t answer at first, she just stared, her mouth slightly open, counting the windows as we rolled past. Finally she whispered, almost to herself. “It’s bigger than the school… bigger than ev

  • DOUBLE HEIR ; A LOVE IN DISGUISE    MONDAY'S MORNING

Alexander's POV “Uggggghhhh!” I groaned, stretching myself until my shoulders popped. The yawn that followed nearly unhinged my jaw. It was heavy, deep and very relaxing. It was Monday morning. A kind of day that dragged its feet and smelled like leftover rain. The most stressful day of the week that came with lots of papers to sign and deals to close. But I wasn't doing any of that today. The thought of last night still sat warm in my chest. I couldn't help it, I just stayed smiling at the ceiling like an idiot.I’d had the best time with Elena, and the twins too of course “God, the twins! My twins!”Elena was still tightened up and guarded as usual, arms crossed even when she laughed or smiled. It was like she was rationing out pieces of herself, but somehow, that didn’t ruin it. If anything, it made the moments she did soften feel earned. “Yes!” I yelled again, throwing the duvet off and planting my feet on the cold tiled floor. “We might need no legal battle after all.”

  • DOUBLE HEIR ; A LOVE IN DISGUISE    COLD HANDS AND FAVORS

ELENA'S POV After dinner, we got into Alex’s car. The driver inserted the key into the ignition, the engine roared to life with a subtle vroom, waking the dashboard lights and a low blip from the radio. He drove back to my apartment. The twins were tired but happy, and they leaned against me in the back seat. Liam wouldn’t stop talking about the fancy lights at the restaurant, the way they hung like tiny constellations from the ceiling, how they made the water glasses throw little rainbows on the tablecloth. His voice was bright, with that relentless five-year-old wonder that didn’t know how to read a room.Lila was already half-asleep, her breath evening out against my jeans, her curls spilling over my lap. The weight of her head was warm and absolute, a small anchor. I kept one hand on her back, feeling the slow rise and fall as she breathed slowly, and the other hand rested lightly in Liam’s hair as he chattered. I held them both close, trying to memorize the exact temperatu

  • DOUBLE HEIR ; A LOVE IN DISGUISE    FOUND

ELENA'S POV “Mom… See what I can do.” I turned to her as she stuffed a bunch of cookies into her mouth, trying to force them down.“Stop that, Lila! You'll choke on that.” Liam sat there laughing uncontrollably, and Alex joined in as well. She munched and munched, and those two males just sat there hailing her name.“Go Lila! Go Lila!” I, on the other hand, held the jar of juice, waiting for the scary scene to be over. “This is ridiculous.”Finally, it came to an end. She let it all down, joining her brother and Alex in the celebration of successfully scaring the shit out of me. I passed her the juice, watched her drink it, and ensured everything was alright. “I did it, Mummy,” she said, letting out a little giggle. “Yes you did, baby,” I responded, smiling at her. We all sat there at this fancy restaurant table. I tried my best to keep a calm smile on my face. The place was beautiful, soft golden lights, crisp white tablecloths, and quiet music playing in the background. My

  • DOUBLE HEIR ; A LOVE IN DISGUISE    AT MY DOOR, AGAIN

ELENA'S POV “Mommy, look! It’s so tall!” I turned around and saw him smiling proudly, and clapping when the tower stayed standing.I smiled and ruffled his hair. “It’s beautiful, baby. You’re both doing such a good job.”We were sitting on the floor with, and I helped them build a tower with their colorful blocks. The apartment felt warm and safe with their laughter filling the small space. Liam was carefully stacking the blue blocks on top, his tongue sticking out in concentration, while my baby girl kept handing him more pieces with excited little hands.I sat there, watching them in admiration. My phone buzzed on the couch behind me. I reached over and picked it up nonchalantly, expecting a message from the office forum. But when I opened it, my stomach churned. It was a message from Alexander. “Get ready. I’m coming to pick you and the kids up for dinner.”I stared at the screen for a long moment, then laughed, a short, bitter sound that surprised even me. “Who does he think

  • DOUBLE HEIR ; A LOVE IN DISGUISE    WATCHED

ELENA'S POV “I think I'll need this,” I said as I lifted the heavy bottle of fresh milk. “This too,” I pointed to the fresh oranges that sat just close by. “Lila would love this.”I pushed the shopping cart slowly through the aisles of the grocery store. It was one of those quiet evenings where the sun was setting early, painting the sky in soft oranges and pinks. The twins were with the neighbor for a couple of hours while I picked up a few things we needed, milk, bread, some fresh fruits, and the vitamins Dr. Patel had recommended. I tried to focus on the list in my hand, but my mind kept drifting back to the office, and to Alexander. The way he had looked at me when he threatened a legal battle for the children, the fear hadn’t left me since that day.I picked up a carton of biscuits and placed it carefully in the cart. The store was not too crowded, which I liked. It gave me time to think without feeling rushed. The past few days had been a blur of anxiety. I had almost resi
