Chapter 4

Author: Greenie
“The end of this month is the final deadline. When would you be able to come back?”

After Dad hung up, he made another call.

“Hello? Patrick, you finally called me!”

Mom sounded almost pleasantly surprised on the other end.

But Dad only frowned.

“How long has it been since you went home? Management came to inspect the gas line, and no one was there.”

Mom clearly realized he hadn’t called to catch up. Her tone turned sharp at once.

“Isn’t that little bastard still at home?”

“That’s impossible. They said they went over several times and no one answered. Go back and take a look.”

Mom’s mocking voice came through the phone.

“I’m not going. He’s your son. You don’t care about him, but you expect me to?”

Then she added, “But let me remind you, he’s only seven. If something happens to him, you’re finished.”

With that, she hung up.

Dad cursed through gritted teeth.

Henry tugged at the hem of his shirt.

“Daddy, do you have something to do? It’s my birthday today. You’re supposed to stay with me.”

Dad looked down at Henry, torn.

Then Henry suddenly burst into tears.

“Daddy, you liar! You clearly have another child outside, so why did you lie and say you’d only ever love me?”

Dad panicked. He quickly picked Henry up and comforted him in a gentle voice.

“When did I say I was leaving? And I really only have one child. I love you the most.”

It didn’t take long for Dad to coax Henry back into a good mood.

Henry happily carried his new toys home with Dad.

After they got home, building management called Dad again.

Left with no choice, he dialed the landline at my house.

The ringing was loud.

But even after he called several times, no one picked up.

Anger flashed in Dad’s eyes.

“That brat. He’s learning from his mother again, lying and pulling a disappearing act for attention. When I get there, I’m going to teach him a lesson.”

I floated beside him, full of guilt.

“Dad, I’m sorry. I’m not ignoring your call on purpose.”

“It’s because I’m already dead.”

It took Dad a long time to coax Henry to sleep.

Only then did he drive over to my house.

The moment he arrived, he saw a crowd gathered outside the door.

Two police officers were there too, along with the building manager.

The building manager’s eyes lit up the second he saw Dad.

“Officer, he’s the owner of this apartment.”

The police officer looked over and showed Dad his badge.

“We received a report. Over the past two days, a strong odor has been coming from inside your apartment. The caller said it smelled like there might be a body inside. We need to go in and check.”

The anger in Dad’s eyes deepened.

“How could it be a body? That brat must have put something inside to make me come over.”

“He’s just like his mother. Always using disgusting little tricks. Honestly, I almost hope it is him stinking in there.”

“I’ll open the door right now and let you check.”

At that, my tears finally spilled over.

Dad, I really wasn’t that kind of child.

Mom was the one who kept hitting me and forcing me to lie to you.

And it really was my body giving off that smell.

In the June heat, I must have been in terrible condition by now.

The police officers and the building manager stared at Dad in disbelief.

Maybe they couldn’t believe a father could say something so cruel about his own child.

The officer looked at Dad and said, “If the child really is inside, then something may have happened to him.”

Dad froze.

His eyes flickered for a second before he shook his head.

“No. He’s always been like this. He loves lying. He definitely isn’t inside.”

As he spoke, he took out his key and unlocked the door.

The moment it opened, everyone froze in place.

But when she was being taken away, she suddenly grabbed Dad’s arm, her face full of regret.“I didn’t mean to hurt our child. I really didn’t do it on purpose.”Dad looked at her with complicated eyes. Then he pushed her away.“I admit I lied to you, but you should never have taken all your resentment out on the child.”With that, Dad turned and left.Mom broke down crying behind him. After Dad went home, he became even quieter. No matter how much Henry cried or made a scene, Dad refused to respond. It wasn’t until Lucy slapped a divorce agreement down in front of him that Dad finally spoke.“What is this supposed to mean?”Lucy tugged the corner of her mouth into a mocking smile.“Sign it. Henry comes with me.”Dad didn’t say much.He only nodded and signed his name.Lucy glanced at the agreement, then went back to the bedroom to pack. That was when Henry’s face twisted into an expression no child his age should have had.He sneered and said, “Daddy. I stood beside the closet and looked at the new clothes. They would have fit perfectly. They were so beautiful.I had never worn clothes that nice before, and excitement slowly lit up inside me.But then it faded again.Because I could only look at these clothes now.I would never be able to wear them. The same went for all those toys.Standing behind Dad, I asked quietly, “Dad, why didn’t you give me a home sooner?“I really envied the other kids who had fathers.”But Dad would never answer that question. He couldn’t hear me.Dad looked around the room he had finished setting up, and satisfaction softened his eyes. Then his phone rang.It was the police station. They told him my autopsy results were ready.Dad and Mom arrived at the station at the same time. Both of them waited anxiously for the results. But I guessed they only wanted to know my death had nothing to do with them. That way, maybe they could feel a little less guilty. But the truth was never going to

Those things filled the entire trunk. After Dad got home, he turned the only empty guest room in his house into my bedroom. He filled the closet with boys’ clothes and covered the desk with toys.I reached out, wanting to touch them.Only then did I realize the clothes Dad had bought were for a teenager. They wouldn’t have fit me at all. Then Dad took the photo he had been holding against his chest and placed it inside a wooden frame. He set it on the nightstand and murmured, “Calvin, I brought you home.”I looked up at him.For a moment, I felt like he really did love me now.But he still didn’t know me well enough. He didn’t even remember how old I was. Then he locked the bedroom door and sat down at the desk, leaving an empty seat beside him.He began teaching that empty seat how to play with each toy. There were beautiful model cars. There were building blocks that could be stacked high. The more I watched, the more fascinated I became, so I listened very carefully.

But as he struggled, he accidentally tugged at the pocket of my shirt.A yellowed photo slipped out and fell to the floor. It was the only photo Dad and I had together. It had been taken right after I was born.Back then, Dad was smiling so brightly. His eyes were full of hope for me.But later, Dad married someone else. She gave him another son. After that, Dad never smiled at me like that again.Mom had been very unstable at the time, and Grandma was afraid she might hurt me when I was still a newborn, so she took me away and raised me herself. It wasn’t until Grandma died of illness that Mom brought me back.On the very first day, Mom screamed at me like she had lost her mind. There was nothing but resentment in her eyes.So I knew she didn’t love me.After that, I started looking forward to seeing Dad.Because Grandma had given me that photo. She told me Dad loved me.She said, “Look how happy he’s smiling.”So I truly believed that Dad had been waiting for me to b

My lifeless body lay in the middle of the living room, giving off a sickening odor.A few flies buzzed around me.No one had to look closely to know what lay beneath my clothes had already started to decay. The neighbors who had come over to watch froze the moment they saw my body.Dad stood there in shock at first. Then he walked toward me and nudged me with his foot.“Stop pretending. Get up. Everyone’s watching.”But I didn’t respond.Instead, that nudge fully exposed the words I had scratched into the floor in my pain.‘Dad, it hurts so much. I really didn’t lie to you.’The handwriting was crooked and uneven, but every word was carved deep and clear. It was hard to imagine how much pain I had been in when I wrote them.Dad stared blankly at those words. After a while, as if he couldn’t smell the odor at all, he crouched down and waved the flies away from me.Then he coaxed me softly.“Calvin, get up. I promise I'll buy you toy cars.”As he spoke, he pushed me gentl
