Jamal’s POV**

Voices surrounded me the moment I hit the lower ground. I tried to rise but the stone beneath me shook like something enormous was dragging its weight across it.

A soft voice called my name.

“Jamal.”

I pushed myself up on my elbows. “Show yourself. Now.”

She stepped into the dim red glow. Her movements were slow, almost gentle, but nothing about her felt natural. Her smile was familiar, but her eyes were empty.

“You still stare at me the same way,” she said. “As if you never buried me.”

My jaw tightened. “You are not her. I know exactly what you are.”

She tilted her head. “Do you. Then why are you trembling.”

“I am not trembling,” I said.

She laughed softly. “You lie even to yourself.”

I stood slowly. “Keep your distance.”

“I thought you would be happy to see me,” she whispered.

“No. I am not,” I replied. “You are a trick. Tell me why you are wearing her face.”

She stepped closer. “Because you remember me. Strong memories build strong forms. And you remember every detail

Melissa’s POVThe moment the gate began to glow again, every Elder froze. The stones under my feet vibrated and the air pulsed with a deep pressure that pushed against my chest. I stepped back but the energy followed me as if it knew my name.Zara grabbed my arm. “Melissa, stop. Do not go near it.”“I hear him,” I whispered. Her eyes widened. “Who.”“Jamal.”The words trembled out of me before I could think. It was not his voice in the air. It was not his breath at my ear. It was something else. Something like a thin thread pulling at the center of my chest.I pressed a hand there. “He is calling me. I know he is.”Kael stepped between me and the stone circle. “You cannot enter the gate. This is not a rescue. You will walk into something you do not understand.”“I do not need to understand anything,” I said. “I need to reach him.”Zara shook her head quickly. “Melissa, listen to me. Whatever happened when the light took both of you, it tore the ground open below. No one knows where he

Melissa’s POV**The moment Jamal’s presence vanished from the bond, my breath stalled in my chest. I had not realized how loud my heartbeat was until it suddenly felt too slow, too heavy, as if it needed permission to keep going.I stood in the middle of the lower hall, surrounded by the quiet hum of crystals and the soft pulse of magic that usually soothed me. But today everything felt wrong. The air pressed against my skin. The walls almost seemed to tilt. And the shimmering light in the center of the chamber flickered like a candle nearly out of flame.Zara came running down the stairs, her palms glowing from whatever scan she had been doing.“Melissa, the pulse readings spiked again,” she said. “Something is shifting around Jamal’s tether. I do not like this.”My voice came out strained. “I cannot feel him. It is faint. Not gone but… farther.”Zara stopped abruptly. “Farther how?”I shook my head because the words refused to come. Instead I turned to the crystal sphere that linked

Jamal’s POVThe moment my foot touched the path of light, the ground beneath me collapsed.I fell. Not through air.Through memory.Through every shadow I ever pushed away.A rush of cold pulled at my chest. My pulse hammered loud enough to echo around me, like the sound was trying to escape my ribs.“Melissa,” I whispered, even though I knew she could not hear me. “Stay strong. I am coming.”The fall slowed. The darkness steadied. My feet touched solid ground.I looked around.A long corridor stretched in front of me, lined with glowing stones.I knew this place.Every breath of it.Every echo.“Jamal.”The voice came from behind me.I turned. And froze.A younger version of myself stood there. Maybe twelve years old. Same eyes. Same posture. Same stubborn set of the jaw. But smaller. Thin. Afraid in a way I never admitted. He stared at me without blinking. “Why did you leave me here?”My breath caught. “This is not real.”The boy stepped forward. “If it is not real, why do you look

Jamal’s POVThe world snapped away from me.One second Melissa’s hands were wrapped around mine. The next, a golden force yanked me backward like a hook buried in my ribs.I shouted her name. “Melissa!”But the darkness swallowed my voice.I hit the ground hard. Cold stone. Empty air. A silence so deep it hummed.I pushed myself up. “Melissa. Answer me.”Nothing.Then a whisper drifted behind me.“You should not have followed her inside the circle.”I turned sharply. “Who is there?”A pale glow appeared. Weak at first. Then brighter. Something like a doorway made of light opened in front of me.A woman stepped out.Not Melissa. Not an Elder.Someone else entirely. She looked young but her eyes were ancient. Calm. Focused. Like she had seen all of this many times.I moved back a step. “Are you another one of them?”She shook her head. “No. I am here because you were not supposed to be touched by that force.”“Then send me back,” I said. “I need to get to Melissa.”“You cannot go back t

Melissa’s POVDarkness wrapped around me like a thick curtain.Heavy. Suffocating. Endless.I tried to breathe, but the air felt trapped in my chest.“Jamal?” My voice sounded far away. Thin. Almost swallowed by the dark. “Jamal, where are you?”A whisper moved through the air.“I am here.”But the voice did not sound steady. It trembled the way a flame trembles when wind presses too close.I reached out through the dark. “Give me your hand.”Something brushed my fingers. Warm. Familiar. Then a deeper voice pushed through the shadows.“You should not cling to him.”I flinched. “No. You do not speak for me. Leave me alone.”The darkness rippled. A faint shape stepped forward. Tall. Cloaked. Watching. The same figure from the circle. The same figure Zara screamed about.“Who are you?” I demanded.“You already know,” the figure answered.“No,” I whispered. “I do not.”But part of me felt like I did. Somewhere deep under my skin. Somewhere the light had touched.Jamal’s voice strained beh
