Jamal's POV

The footsteps came first—slow, methodical and clomping down the hallway in a countdown i couldn't stop.

They weren't in any rush. Whoever was coming wanted us to hear them and wanted us to hear every step as if it thudded into our chests.

Melissa stiffened behind me, her fingers locked onto the back of my shirt as she gasped in ragged breaths and i could feel her racing heart pounding almost as frantically as mine.

The hooded woman, so self-assured, so unattainable when she first appeared, stood quickly and her head whipped towards the door with her easy calm that she radiated was gone in an instant, replaced by something more basic and fidgetiness.

The other man, the one who'd spoken only parables also shifted as his position changed placing his body, bracing as though he'd sensed the storm approaching but wouldn't let himself believe it would hit, then the tension wrapped around the air like barbed wire and my grip on the gun tightened until the trigger bit at my finger

Jamal's POVDarkness occupied the doorway, stationary as a corpse, surviving on the quiet that followed. Too quiet that it was almost as though the woman in the cloak, Melissa and even myself didn't breathe, didn't utter a peep and my heartbeat thudded persistently into my ears. That was all i could hear. A warning.Melissa's shaking hand rested on my arm, her voice a shaking whisper "Jamal… who are they?" she askedI didn't answer cos i couldn't and my tongue was as heavy as lead, my throat as dry as the desert. There are certain truths that hurt more than they heal and the person in the doorway was one of them. The reply emerged, the faint light skimming around the boundaries of their shape and a long coat, gloved hands, a thin scar across the jaw that caught whatever meager light there was. Yet the darkness still clung to them, concealing what i most wanted to glimpse which is their eyes."You waited long enough" the voice remarked, smooth and low "Still hiding behind guns and sham

Melissa's POVI couldn't help but gawk at her. The woman with the cloak stood just feet away, cloak thrown back far enough to reveal her face, sharp and unyielding like she'd been waiting half a century for this but it wasn't her face that terrified me the most, it was the silence of Jamal. He'd locked up, gun raised but his face broken like looking at her had opened him, had allowed recollections he'd kept hidden struggle their way back to him. His eyes, those usually hot and unblinking eyes, now had shadows i didn't recognize and in those shadows, i saw a response he hadn't given yet."Jamal," I whispered, my throat abrasive "who is she?" i askedHe did not respond and his jaw twitched, the muscle jerked but no sound came from his lips but his silence was louder than any confession. The woman laughed, the sound slicing through the air like a knife "Oh, Melissa, oh poor thing, he hasn't told you not about me and not about what we were"My own chest contracted, panic weighing down on

Jamal’s POVThe door cracked wider, the wood groaning like it hadn’t been touched in years. My gun was already drawn, steady in my grip, though my pulse thundered hard enough to rattle my ribs. Melissa clung to my arm, her breath shallow, quick, trembling. The figure stood in the doorway, framed by that narrow beam of light. Cloaked, hood shadowing her face, hands hidden inside the folds of fabric. Not moving. Not speaking. Just… watching.“Who are you?” I demanded, voice cutting through the silence like steel. No answer.“Step inside. Slowly. Hands where I can see them.”The figure obeyed, but in a way that made the hair at the back of my neck rise—deliberate, measured, as though she wanted me to see how unbothered she was. Her movements whispered with silk against wood as she crossed the threshold.Melissa’s nails dug into my arm, her voice barely audible. “Jamal… is it her?”I didn’t answer. Not yet. I couldn’t afford to—not until I knew. The hood tilted, a faint smile visible bene

Melissa's POVDarkness engulfed the library and the last flicker of light had died with the lamp, leaving us to nothing but the heavy silence of the estate and the voice. That voice."Did you really think you could keep her from me, Jamal?" I askedThe voice glided through the room like smoke, feminine, calm but oozing menace and my chest tightened, breath lodging against my ribs and i couldn't see her in the dark but she was there and was real.My heart was pounding in my ears and Jamal's arms around my waist clenched tighter, hard, unyielding. He pulled me into him, shielding me with his body and his voice was low, controlled but i could feel the fires raging beneath "Eleanor" he snarled, her name a curse. My gut clenched Eleanor. The name was the one I'd spoken. The one that was linked to my mother's fear, to the letter she'd left and now, she was in this house.I caught Jamal's arm "She's here" I whispered."Yes." His chin brushed against my temple when he leaned in close "But she

Jamal's POVMelissa's lips trembled as she said that name, so gentle it was almost overwhelmed by the fire raging in the library hearth but i heard it and it was like a hand had reached into my chest and encircled their fist around my heart. The name did not fit in this house. Not on her lips and not on Annabelle, Michael or the ghosts of Whitmoore Estate and yet it sat here.I froze, my muscles braced, my head whirling between horror and shock and my voice was sharper than i intended "Say it again." i demandedMelissa's eyes widened with a mix of shame and terror present within them "I no Jamal, you don't know." i said"Mellissa" I leaned in with my voice dropping into that dark tone that always seemed to send her fleeing from me or tumbling into me "I want you to say it again without hiding anything and don't hide anyone. Say it again" i demandedHer fists were clenched at the bottom of her dress, her knuckles as white as stone "It was Eleanor," she whispered finally, the syllables
