"But you did say it." He set down the tablet and moved closer, looking at her with new interest. "Interesting."

"Can we just pretend I didn't say anything?"

"No, I don't think we can." He was standing close now, close enough that she could see flecks of gold in his dark eyes. "Tell me, Miss Cheng, do you make a habit of calling your doctors hot?"

"This is my first time in an ER. So no, no habit. This is a brand new embarrassing experience for me."

"Good." He said it with satisfaction, like her embarrassment pleased him somehow. "I'd hate to think you went around collecting doctors."

The nurse came back with supplies before Maya could figure out how to respond to that. Dr. Hunt wrapped her ankle with professional efficiency, showing her how to use the crutches, giving her stern instructions about staying off the foot and keeping it elevated.

"I want you to follow up with me personally," he said as he finished. "Not orthopedics. Me."
