Chapter 8

Author: Shirley Snow
Theodore's usually immaculate suit was covered in dust, and blood smeared his temple. His breathing was ragged, and his eyes widened the instant he saw Calista and Aveline.

This was the first time Calista had ever seen this detached man looking so disheveled.

After discovering that they were missing following the car accident, Theodore immediately sent people to track them down and rushed to their location as fast as he could.

With only one minute left before the bomb exploded and time to dismantle a single device, Theodore chose Aveline without hesitation.

He worked rapidly on Aveline's explosive without lifting his head. "Calista, once I get her out, I'll come back for you immediately."

Calista laughed. Strangely, her heart didn't ache anymore, perhaps because she no longer loved him.

After Theodore dismantled Aveline's device, the countdown showed only 20 seconds left. Aveline gripped his arm tightly, her voice trembling so hard she could barely speak. "Theodore! We have to go! It's going to explode!"

For the first time, Theodore pushed her away, urging her to escape before turning back to defuse Calista's bomb.

But Calista suddenly grabbed his hand and shoved him away. She said calmly, "Theodore, take her and leave. Remember, from this day on, I don't need you anymore. Whether I live or die is none of your business. I'm not someone no one wants. If you don't love me, plenty of others will!"

Theodore froze in shock.

Aveline broke down in tears beside them. "Theodore, I'm so scared! If you don't leave, I won't leave either!"

As the seconds ticked down to detonation, if they didn't leave now, all three would die. At the critical moment, Theodore picked Aveline up and rushed out.

Calista closed her eyes, her fingers moving swiftly across the explosive. She had taken a demolition course in college, and now that knowledge came to her rescue.

A soft click sounded. She successfully disconnected the fuse at the final second.

Yet an explosion still went off. As the blast hurled her into the air, she caught a blurry glimpse of Theodore running back.

Calista opened her eyes in the hospital to excruciating pain radiating from her arm.

Theodore was sitting by her bed. When he saw her awake, he quickly steadied her. "Don't move. You just had a skin graft for Ave."

"What did you say?" Calista asked.

In her daze, she almost thought that she had misheard him.

Theodore stayed silent for a moment, his voice carrying a rare hint of guilt. "Ave's arm was injured in the explosion. She didn't want a scar, and since your skin tone is the closest match, we took a graft from you for the transplant."

Calista stared at him in disbelief. "Theodore, did you even ask me?"

He tried to soothe her. "I'll make it up to you. Haven't you always wanted to go on a date with me? Once you're discharged—"

She cut him off, "Who cares?"

She ripped out her IV needle forcefully, blood trickling down the back of her hand. "You can't just treat me this way!"

Theodore was stunned.

Calista's eyes were bloodshot, and her voice trembled. "She's everything to you, and I'm nothing—is that it? You just took advantage of my feelings for you… You just used me—"

She couldn't bring herself to finish.

Theodore felt a tightness in his chest as he suddenly recalled her words in the warehouse. "If you don't love me, plenty of others will."

Just as he was about to speak, his phone rang.

The anxious voice of his assistant, Lucas Ashford, buzzed through the phone. "Mr. Montclair, the Princess Danielle limited-edition necklace that Ms. Montclair has always wanted is being auctioned tonight in Valdoria. Do you want to go?"

Theodore gave a brief affirmation and hung up.

He put his phone away and looked at Calista. "I have to go abroad for a few days. I'll bring you a gift when I get back."

After a pause, he added, "Don't worry. I'll keep my word about the date."

With that, he pushed open the door and walked away quickly.

The moment the door closed, Calista could no longer hold back. She slowly curled up, hugging herself tightly as tears streamed down.

The entire venue fell silent.Theodore stood at the boundary of light and shadow, the creases of his suit still stained with coffee from the flight, and his usually impeccable hair tousled over his forehead.Sebastian narrowed his eyes. "Mr. Montclair, are you trying to ruin my proposal?"Theodore ignored him and walked straight to Calista, dropping to his knees in front of her. His voice was terribly hoarse. "I know I deserve no forgiveness, but please look at me one more time."The guests erupted in shock as the head of the Montclair family from Joville, a man known for being cold and noble, kneeled there perfectly upright.Calista took half a step back. "Theodore, don't do this."Theodore's Adam's apple bobbed. "I've written 300 love letters. They covered every day from the moment we first met, through our marriage, and then… to the days when I fell for you but was too afraid to admit it."He opened the box with trembling hands, and the snow-white envelopes spilled out like f

Aveline froze in place. "What?"Theodore spoke evenly, "Since you are married now, try to make the best of it."Then, he looked at George. "You're not to lay a hand on her. Otherwise, you know the consequences."George nodded repeatedly and stepped forward to grab Aveline's wrist. "Darling, come back with me. I'll treat you well."Even if George didn't hit her, he still had countless ways to torment her. Besides, he was old and ugly, while she was still young and stunning.Aveline struggled wildly. "Theodore! How could you do this to me? You said you would protect me forever! You said I was the most important person to you! Theodore… I was wrong… Theodore…"Her hysterical cries gradually faded into the distance. Theodore walked into the study without looking back.In the study, he personally set fire to everything related to Aveline, including photographs, gifts, and the drawings she had made as a child. Flames devoured the past, sending ashes drifting through the air. From tha

In the cafe, Sebastian stirred his coffee unhurriedly. Theodore's very first sentence made his hand stop mid-motion."Give her back to me. I'll trade anything for her."Sebastian raised an eyebrow. "Anything?"Theodore's voice was hoarse. "Yes. I can give you shares of Montclair Group, land in Joville, and my overseas assets."He closed his eyes for a moment. "I can even bring Ave back and make her apologize to Calla in person."Sebastian suddenly laughed. He set down his cup, a hint of mockery flickering in his blue eyes. "Theodore, do you still not understand?"Calista isn't a commodity. She's a human being with flesh and blood, someone who feels pain and sheds tears. You once had her whole heart, and you crushed it with your own hands."Sebastian stood up and looked down at Theodore. "Now, it's my turn to love her."He let out a soft chuckle. "As for you, you can live the rest of your life with your guilt."Theodore sat in place, watching Sebastian walk away. He suddenly re

The sobbing on the other end of the line stopped abruptly. Aveline's voice trembled, sharp with disbelief. "Theodore… What do you mean by that?"Theodore closed his eyes, his voice deep and weary. "I've indulged you too much in the past. Since you're married now, try to make the best of it. If you truly find it unbearable—"He paused before continuing, "Then, talk to Mom and Dad. I don't have the energy to deal with it right now."He gave a bitter laugh. "Besides, if I step in, I'm afraid that Calla will be even less likely to forgive me."Aveline's breathing grew rapid, then she erupted into a fit of hysterical screams. "Have you actually fallen for Calista?"Theodore remained silent for a moment before finally whispering, "Yes."That single word made Aveline completely lose control. Her voice was piercing. "That's impossible! The one you like is supposed to be me! How could you like her? You're lying! You must be lying to me!"She rambled incoherently, accusing him of everyth

The sharp smell of disinfectant stung Theodore's nose. He opened his eyes and saw a stark white ceiling above him. He tried to move his fingers, but his entire body ached as if it had been smashed and reassembled."Are you awake?" Elijah asked. He sat by the hospital bed, peeling an apple at an unhurried pace. The cold glint reflected by the blade flashed across his eyes. "You're incredibly lucky to have survived this."Theodore's throat was parched. "Where's Calla?" he asked.Elijah gave a wicked smile. "She's in the next room taking care of Sebastian. I set that fire on purpose and drugged both of you so your limbs would go weak and you couldn't escape. Yet the first person she saved was Sebastian."The strip of apple peel snapped with a soft click and fell into the trash can. Elijah continued, "You should've seen how anxious she was. She stayed by Sebastian's side all night, and her eyes were swollen from crying."Every word Elijah spoke brought a slow, lingering ache to Theod

When the knocking sounded, Theodore was standing before the floor-to-ceiling windows, the cigarette between his fingers burning down to the end. He opened the door and saw Elijah leaning against the frame, holding a glass of amber whiskey.Elijah raised a brow and handed him the glass. "Did you hit Sebastian?"Theodore didn't like alcohol and had only ever drunk tea. But at that moment, he needed something to dull the storm of emotions inside him.He took the glass and drained it in one gulp. The burning sensation of the strong liquor in his throat felt exactly like the suffocation he experienced when he saw Calista entwined with Sebastian.Theodore's voice was incredibly raspy. "He was in bed with Calla. I couldn't stand to look at that scene."Elijah suddenly laughed, though his eyes remained icy. "Calla? That's new. In six years, this is the first time I've ever heard you call my sister that."The alcohol began to take effect. Theodore braced himself against the doorframe as t
