Lena’s fingers shook as they moved forward through the blinding light.

Alexander stood frozen, chest heaving, eyes begging.

Elias stared back at her, unreadable, but the tension in his jaw—

the quiet resignation in his eyes—

told her he already knew what she would choose.

And herself…

That path pulsed like a heartbeat waiting to stop.

Lena exhaled shakily.

She made her choice.

And touched—
Alexander’s light.

The world exploded in gold.

Alexander gasped—his knees buckling as the light slammed into him like a wave. His hands flew to his chest, eyes squeezing shut.

Elias staggered backward, gripping a tree trunk, face contorted with a flash of pain he couldn’t hide.

Marcus screamed in fury beneath the barrier.

Lena stood still as the force poured out of her, into Alexander, binding something ancient to something human. Her mother’s voice wrapped around her like a fading embrace:

“My brave girl… you chose love.”

Lena’s vision blurred. “Mom—wait—”

But the light began to dim.

The barrier cracked.

The forest returned.

The cold night rushed back into her lungs.

And Alexander fell forward—

Collapsing into the leaves.

Lena caught him before he hit the ground. “Alexander—Alex—hey—hey, open your eyes!”

His lashes fluttered.

He blinked up at her, confused, breath trembling.

“Lena… what… what did you do?”

Tears streamed down her cheeks as she stroked his face. “I chose the one who would end the Circle without destroying everything. You.”

Elias straightened slowly, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.

The bitterness in his eyes cut like a blade.

“So that’s it,” Elias said quietly. “You chose him.”

Lena looked up at Elias — regret twisting deep in her chest.

“I chose peace,” she whispered.

But Elias shook his head. “No. You chose him.”

Alexander forced himself upright with her help, breathing heavily. His eyes flicked to his brother, wary. But then he looked at Lena again.

“Tell me what it means,” he said softly. “What did that light do?”

Lena swallowed hard.

She cupped Alexander’s face gently.

“My mother said… if I chose you, the Circle ends forever.”

Her voice broke.

“And you become its last heir.”

Alexander’s eyes widened in shock. “I… what?”

“You’re the one who carries the authority now,” Lena whispered. “You’re the one who can shut it down.”

He shook his head immediately. “I don’t want it. I don’t want any of that power. Lena, I’m not—”

“You don’t get to refuse it,” Elias said, voice turning cold. “The bloodline recognized you. The system accepted you.”

Alexander turned on him. “Don’t tell me what I am!”

“You’re the heir.” Elias stepped forward. “Not me. Not her. You.”

Alexander’s jaw clenched. “Why didn’t you tell me the truth? All this time—why didn’t you tell me Father wasn’t the heir, that Mom—your mom—was—”

“Because I didn’t know until it was too late!” Elias shouted, voice cracking. “Because Adrian lied to you AND me. Because he killed my mother and used yours AND Lena’s—and Marcus—everyone!”

Lena flinched, her heart twisting painfully.

Alexander looked between them — all anger draining from his face, replaced by something far heavier.

Responsibility.

“No,” Alex said hoarsely. “No. I won’t do this. I won’t lead anything.”

Lena touched his chest. “You won’t lead. You’ll end it.”

Alexander’s breath caught. “How?”

Elias answered.

“By killing Marcus.”

Marcus, still trapped beneath the weakening barrier, began to laugh — a sick, broken sound.

“Oh, yes,” Marcus rasped. “Come now, Alex. Fulfill your destiny. Prove yourself. Murder me.”

Alexander shook violently. “I’m not a killer.”

“You will be,” Marcus sneered. “You chose to end the Circle. There’s only one way to do that.”

Elias sighed quietly. “He’s right. The Circle dies only when its last leader dies by the hand of the chosen heir.”

Alexander turned pale.

Lena grabbed his face again, forcing him to look at her. “You don’t have to do it alone. I’ll be with you.”

He stared at her, tears gathering in his eyes. “Lena… if I kill him… I’ll lose myself.”

“You won’t,” she whispered fiercely. “I won’t let you.”

Marcus snarled, blood dripping down his chin. “Kill me, Alexander. Or everyone you love dies with me.”

Alexander’s breath came out in a shudder.

His hand closed around the gun at his side.

Lena froze. “Alexander…”

Elias watched silently.

Marcus spread his arms wide. “Come on! Your father failed. Your mother failed. Your little girlfriend made her choice. Now it’s your turn, heir.”

Alexander stood.

Gun in hand.

Trembling.

Lena rose with him, heart lodged in her throat.

“Alex—listen to me,” she whispered. “Whatever you do… you’re not alone.”

He swallowed hard.

Looked at her.

Then at Elias.

Then at Marcus.

His voice cracked:

“I never wanted this.”

Marcus grinned. “Nobody does.”

Alexander lifted the gun.

Marcus spread his arms wider.

A single bullet would end the Circle.

A single shot would fulfill Lena’s choice.

A single moment would change their world forever.

Lena held her breath.

Elias closed his eyes.

Alexander pulled the trigger—

CLICK.

The gun jammed.

Marcus’s eyes widened.

Elias’s eyes snapped open.

Alexander stared at the weapon in disbelief.

Lena inhaled sharply.

Marcus whispered:

“Oh… this just got interesting.”

He looked less like a man and more like a star about to collapse.Inside the cabin, Lena screamed his name, her voice carried away by the roaring wind.“ELIAS—STOP! LISTEN TO ME!”But the purge inside him was drowning everything else out.Cassandra grabbed the cockpit mic, yelling into it,“Elias! You’re overloading the purge core! You need to stabilize—NOW!”He didn’t respond. His feet dug through the wing metal, molten gold dripping from his heels. The aircraft groaned, shaking violently.Alexander crawled toward him, pressing against the wind that threatened to rip him free.“Elias!” he shouted again. “Look at me!”No m

Cold air roared into the cabin as Elias hurled himself out of the open hatch. The night sky swallowed him instantly, wind tearing at his body. But he didn’t fall.A golden flare burst beneath his boots as he landed on the jet’s wing with supernatural balance — the purge inside him anchoring every movement. The sentinel turned its head toward him.Two red eyes glowed through the mask.It stood tall, unmoving, sword still embedded in the wing. Its black armor absorbed the rushing wind like it was standing on solid ground.Elias steadied himself and shouted over the storm,“COME ON, THEN!”The sentinel pulled the blade free. The metal shrieked.Lena screamed inside the cabin as the jet lurched violently to the side, sparks spitting from the damaged panel.Alexander grabbed the wall to steady himself.“CASSANDRA—KEEP US LEVEL!”“I’M TRYING!” Cassandra yelled back. “BUT IF THAT THING TEARS OFF THE WING, WE’RE ALL DEAD!”On the wing, the sentinel lunged.Elias threw up his arm — golden ener

The south exit of the bunker opened into a narrow passageway carved through stone, the air thick with dust and the hum of hidden machinery. Lena stayed pressed against Alexander’s side as they moved, her legs still weak but her mind alert.Elias walked ahead, silent, tense, every muscle rigid. The faint golden glow beneath his skin pulsed faster the closer they came to the open air.Cassandra led them quickly.“Hurry. The purge is reacting,” she said without turning.Elias’s voice was low.“It’s sensing something.”Alexander’s brow hardened. “Sable?”“Or something she controls,” Cassandra replied grimly. The moment they stepped out into the night, a cold mountain wind hit them, carrying the scent of pine and snow. In the distance, faint landing lights illuminated a small, camouflaged airstrip. A sleek black jet sat ready, engines quietly humming.Alexander’s grip tightened around Lena’s hand.“We’re almost there.”But Lena didn’t miss the way his eyes scanned every shadow, every treet

The bunker was quieter now, but only on the surface.Beneath every breath, every heartbeat, tension simmered like a storm waiting to break.Alexander paced the length of the room, jaw tight, shoulders stiff, mind already ten steps ahead. He checked weapons, supplies, maps—then checked them all again.Lena watched him from the side, still pale but recovering. He hadn’t left her side for longer than a minute since she came back to life.Elias leaned against the far wall, eyes closed, breathing slow and controlled as he fought to stabilize the purge inside him. Faint gold pulsed beneath his skin, but he kept it contained—for now.Cassandra typed furiously at the main terminal, the screens filled with encrypted files, satellite paths, and intel from an underground network Lena didn’t know existed. The group was silent… until Cassandra suddenly spoke.“We need to move within the next two hours.”Alexander snapped to attention. “Why?”Cassandra turned toward them, pushing her glasses up the

Silence fell over the bunker the moment Cassandra said the name.Sable.The word seemed to echo through the metal walls, landing like a blade in the middle of the room.Elias stared at the back of the photograph, his eyes trembling—not with golden light this time, but with raw, human emotion.“My mother…” he whispered. “She—she knew Sable?”Cassandra folded her arms, her expression guarded. “She more than knew her. Sable was your mother’s trainee. Her successor. Her shadow.”Alexander stiffened. “Successor to what?”Cassandra sighed, rubbing her temples.“To the original purge order. Not the corrupted version the Circle twisted… but the true discipline. The first knowledge. The pure form.”Elias looked up sharply. “Then she can help me.”Cassandra hesitated.Lena felt a chill creep down her spine.“Cassandra… why do you look like that?”Cassandra exhaled.“Because Sable is not just your mother’s student.”She looked at Alexander.“She’s the one who betrayed her.”Alexander’s jaw clenc

The first breath Lena took was shallow… then another… then stronger.Alexander held her so tightly she could barely move, but she didn’t fight it. She curled into him like she was trying to climb back into his heartbeat.“Alex…” she whispered weakly. “I’m… I’m okay…”He let out a shaking breath that wasn’t a laugh, wasn’t a sob—just a release of everything he’d been holding inside.“No,” he whispered against her hair. “You’re not okay. You stopped breathing. Twice.”He pulled back, cupping her face with trembling hands.“Don’t say you’re okay.”Lena tried to smile, but her lips only quivered.“You were here,” she whispered. “That’s why I came back.”Alexander broke. His forehead pressed against hers, tears falling freely.“Don’t ever do that again,” he whispered fiercely. “Don’t risk yourself for me. Don’t walk into death like that. Don’t—”“I didn’t do it for you,” she murmured softly. He tensed.“I did it for Elias.”Alexander swallowed hard, nodding slowly.“I know.”He lifted her
