Chapter 1 Envy bustled around her bedroom packing some of her things into her black leather suitcase. She stopped and glared at her brother when she noticed he was unpacking her stuff every time she turned her back to get more. He’d been breathing down her neck since she came home and she was starting to get really frustrated with him. “Stop it,” Envy snapped as she jerked a handful of clothes away from him and threw them back into the suitcase. She tossed her long red hair over her shoulder and shot him a warning glare. “But moving out? You’ve only known him what… a week? Are you sure this is what you want to do?” Chad repeated like a mantra. “The answer is still the same Chad,” Envy informed him in a steady voice, wondering how many times she’d h
Chapter 2 Anthony paced relentlessly across the marble floor of his study. He ran a hand through his dark hair in frustration and anger. He knew he’d lost his temper when he killed Arthur and now he’d also lost his leverage for binding Jewel to him as his mate… not that it would stop him. He’d meant for the situation to remain calm… but when Arthur had brought up Anthony’s father, the werewolf part of him had lost it. Now he’d be forced to use coercion of a different kind on his runaway bride. The only problem was, he had to find her first. Someone knocked on the door and Anthony stopped pacing long enough to straighten his hair and clothing. He was the alpha, and with that came a certain measure of decorum. “Enter,” he called out in a cold voice. The door opened and one of his wolves stepped in, closing the door behind him. “What did you find?” Anthony asked. The pack member looked very nervous and cleared his throat. “I stayed behind just like you ordered
Chapter 3 Kriss entered the apartment he shared with Tabatha and locked the door behind him. He’d searched high and low for Dean and hadn’t found a trace of him or the demon he’d been chasing. One thing about their kind, if they wanted to hide, they knew how to vanish and leave no traces of where they were. He’d been able to sense the demon everywhere though he never saw it. It wasn’t until it was freed that he’d realized he had always been able to sense its presence. He could still feel the malicious intent of that dark personality even inside his home… it didn’t settle well in the pit of his stomach. Walking through the dark apartment, Kriss made his way back to Tabatha’s bedroom and smiled at the innocent visage asleep in the bed. She was curled up like a kitten around her favorite stuffed animal… a Yorkie dog with its tongue sticking out. The stuffed animal was the only remnant of her childhood she had left. A few years ago, she’d finally broken down and told him the st
Chapter 4 Kane leaned against the cross several feet behind Michael and gazed out over the city wondering where Misery was hiding or if she was even still in the city. There was a whole world out there for her to terrorize, but karma was a bitch and so were the instincts that were telling him she hadn’t gone very far. He made a face imagining her walking down the sidewalk as a rotting corpse then stifled a shiver at the image of the freaky little girl and decided the corpse was less creepy. Over the centuries he’d seen moments when adult vampires had turned children. What many of them never learned was children often were more vicious than their adult ‘parents’ and they ended up dead by the adult’s hand or the child killed the one that turned them. He had to admit that one woman that wrote the vampire books had the right idea. He hoped whoever the demon expert Trevor had mentioned knew what she was doing… but he doubted it. The memory of the demon was what had led h
Chapter 5 Trevor was leaning up against the hood of the car with his arms crossed over his chest. Zachary was sitting on the hood next to him with a lit cigarette in his hand. Trevor sighed and shifted his feet before looking up at the church from their place in the parking lot. “Why is it that churches always look so creepy after dark?” Zachary asked out of the blue. Trevor shrugged, “Don’t know, could be all the fire and brimstone and stuff.” “I’ll be glad when Angelica gets here.” Zachary said after a moment. “Why didn’t we meet her at the airport?” Trevor asked. Zackary glanced over at Trevor before jumping up on the brick wall surrounding the church and sat down directly above the church sign. “Well my friend, that would be too much like saying she can’t make it here by herself.” Trevor jumped up and straddled the wall beside Zackary with his feet hanging down on either side of it. “Miss Independent,” he said with a nod. “How could I have forgotten the
Chapter 6 Alicia walked down the sidewalk heading for a specific area of the city. She’d snuck past her guards and out of the club without getting caught. A grin broke out on her face as she remembered walking right past Quinn at the door and he hadn’t even blinked. He’d even wished her a safe ride home. Cat calls and wolf whistles followed her down the street and a few men actually got the courage to make lewd advances toward her but she blew them off. She didn’t have time to play with morons who had nothing better to do with their time than make a woman feel like a side dish. She was on a mission to find Micah and she wasn’t going to be distracted. Entering a shadier area of LA, Alicia slowed her pace and approached a set of alleyways that she knew was a big hang out for hookers and criminals. She silently laughed to herself imagining some pimp coming up to her and demanding to know why she was on his turf. Boy she’d make sure he changed his line of work real quick. On se
Chapter 7 Nick stood at the club entrance shifting nervously from one foot to the other. He’d already called Warren on his earpiece to let him know he smelled a couple of vampires in the immediate area. Finally the door opened and Michael stepped out next to him. “Warren sent you?” Nick asked. “Nah, I just thought I’d come out here and look pretty to entice the ladies,” Michael said with a grin. “Smart ass,” Nick muttered. “Don’t you mean entice the men?” Michael laughed then tilted his head in the direction of the parking lot. “Let’s go see what they’re up to, shall we?” Nick nodded to the other bouncer at the door and followed Michael around the corner of the building. They passed by the parked cars and headed toward the small alley behind the club. An animalistic scream shattered the serene night and they looked at each other before taking off at a fast run. Rounding the corner they froze when they saw Alicia fighting two vampires on her own. Michael
Chapter 8 Damon threw the limp vampire off him and quickly staggered to his feet. He wavered a bit and hoped the world would stop spinning long enough for him to get his damn balance. He went to take a step forward and started to fall, luckily the wall was there to catch him. “Damn it!” he whispered and looked back down the alley. There were at least twenty bodies in the alley, not that he cared. He wasn’t counting or bragging… dying maybe… not that anyone would come to his funeral. Looking down at his chest where it hurt the most, he growled seeing a finger still sticking out of the hole where that girl had staked him. Carefully grabbing it, he jerked it out knowing faster was better… kind of like the whole ‘ripping off the Band-Aid’ metaphor. Tossing the dismembered finger aside, Damon frowned and quickly counted his own fingers just to make sure he still had all ten. If Kane had been there, Damon knew he would’ve been the victim of endless teasing for weeks. Plac
