MIKE

The door slammed shut behind me, I’m sure the neighbors heard it—if we had any. I threw my bag onto the bed and sank into my desk chair, my fingers pressing into my temples. I hated coming home but I had to because I ran out of funds.

I got exactly what I expected—another dinner, another argument. It was always the same.

“Art won’t pay your bills, Michael.”

“Your brother needs you in the company.”

“When are you going to start taking life seriously?”

I exhaled sharply, rubbing my face. I hated how small I felt after these fights. Like no matter what I did, I’d never be enough.

I heard a soft knock on the door. I didn’t answer, but my mom opened the door anyway.

“Michael.”

I kept my back to her, pretending to sketch. “Yeah?”

She sighed, the way she always did before saying something I didn’t want to hear. “Your father just wants what’s best for you.”

I pressed my pencil harder into the paper. “No mom, he wants what’s best for him.”

“Mike—”

“I’m not dropping art.” My voice

ADRIAN “What's the status?” I answered as I picked up my phone from the marble countertop. The predawn light filtered through my penthouse windows as I fastened the last button on my suit jacket. The packed luggage by the door looked convincing enough in case anyone was watching—two leather suitcases and a duffel bag. The perfect image of a man preparing for an extended trip abroad. Marco's voice crackled through the line. “I checked and heard that Doyle was already popping champagne at the faculty club. The bastard's telling everyone you're running with your tail between your legs.” I adjusted my cufflinks. “Let him enjoy his little taste of victory.”“You sure about this, boss? Once we pull the trigger—”“It's already done.” I checked my watch. “Has Jax done it?”“Yes boss. He says the IRS just needs one more nudge.”The elevator dinged in my penthouse. Right on time. “The car’s here,” I said. “Keep the line open.”The campus was unusually quiet as my driver pulled up to th

ADRIAN“You've made the right choice,” the dean said, mopping his forehead. “This partnership will elevate Blackmoore's reputation internationally.” I watched his fingers tremble as he slid the Berlin contract across his desk. I signed, smiling at him. “When does Shaw expect me?”“Friday.” His smile twitched. “His private jet will be waiting at his private aerodrome.” Standing, I adjusted my cuffs. “Do give Gregory my regards.”I called Marco to assemble the boys as soon as I left his office.*****************Marco poured three fingers of bourbon and relaxed against the table. Dimitri leaned against the wall near the door, his arms crossed, while Jax's fingers flew across his laptop keyboard, the blue glow from the laptop reflecting off his glasses. I set my glass down with a quiet click. “We have another problem, boys.” Marco stopped picking at the label. “How big are we talking?”“It's about my acceptance to go to Berlin.”Dimitri's eyebrow twitched. “Wait, you're taking the

LENAI stared at my reflection in the dorm mirror, practicing for the tenth time. “Um…Jeremy, I really value our friendship…”No, that was too stiff. “Hey, so about what you said…”That's too casual. I groaned, flopping onto my bed. Staring at the ceiling that offered no answers, just a crack that I made a self-note to fix.A sharp knock at the door interrupted my thoughts.“Lena? Are you alive in there?” I heard Ava's voice through my door. I dragged myself up and opened the door. Ava stood there, already dressed for our usual Friday hangout—ripped jeans, oversized sweater, that look in her eye that said she knew something was up. “Mike's downstairs,” she said, leaning against the doorframe. “He says if we don't hurry, he's eating all the mozzarella sticks himself.”I rubbed my temples. “I don't know if I can go out tonight.” Ava stepped inside, kicking the door shut behind her. “Okay, what's really going on?” I picked at a loose thread on my comforter. “I'm fine.”“Bul

ADRIANIt's been days now since I'd last spoken to Lena. Since I've been forcing myself not to call, not to text, not to drive past her dorm just to catch a glimpse of her. She was better off this way—she was safer. The whiskey glass sat untouched on my desk, the ice had long melted. My phone taunted me from where it lay face-up, the blank screen mocking my self-control. I couldn't—i just couldn't do that to her. Then the phone rang. Marco's name flashed across the screen. I swiped to answer. “This better be important.” “Boss.” Marco's voice was tight. “We have a problem. Marcus is dead.” I stilled. “What?”“Our men found him in an alley near the docks. Two bullets to the back of the head. It was a clean job.”My fingers tightened around the phone. Marcus—the weasel who'd been snapping photos of Lena for Evelyn. “When did you find out?”“A couple hours ago. The cops haven't even found the body yet.”I paced to the window, the city lights blurring as my mind raced. “You think Evely

LENAMy phone buzzed early in the morning with a voice message from Jeremy; “You better be awake. Lit class in forty-five minutes. Doyle's giving pop quizzes today.”I groaned into my pillow. The remnants of last night's dream— involving Adrian and me at a beach in Italy— still clung to the edges of my consciousness. Another text came through; “I'll buy you coffee if you're there in thirty minutes.”That got me moving.I hurried across campus and saw Jeremy as he leaned against the literature building's steps, two steaming cups in hand. “You're late,” he said, handing me the one with extra sugar— just how I liked it.“What do you mean? I'm on time!”“By your standards, maybe.” He bumped my shoulder as we walked in. “You look like a mess girl.”“Thanks,” I rolled my eyes, sipping the coffee. “You always know just what to say.”Doyle's class dragged like always, but having Jeremy beside me drawing an anime character—or what he thought was Naruto made it bearable. When the bell finally
