LENA

"You’re sure about this?" Dani asked, holding up a pair of heels I clearly didn’t need.

I laughed. "No, but I’m doing it anyway. Dad’s paying…” I flashed my dad's credit card. “Might as well make it worth the trip."

We were overloaded with shopping bags as we stepped out of the last boutique in downtown San Diego. Dani, my ride-or-die was practically filled with energy, making jokes and teasing me every five steps as we browsed through racks of dresses, accessories, and books I pretended were absolutely necessary for class.

"You’re spoiling yourself. I like this version of you," she said with a grin.

I rolled my eyes. "I’m going back early, remember? I need a few things."

Dani paused. "Still not telling your parents the real reason?"

I shook my head and dropped my voice. "You know my parents, D! It’s just easier this way. They wouldn’t understand."

I hadn’t told them that I was heading back to campus a week early to see Adrian. I made up a lie about needing access to the lab earl

LENAA week! It's been a whole agonizing week since Adrian got that text from God knows who during our mini vacation—the vacation had to be cut short because of that text.I missed when Adrian and I spent lazy mornings in bed, kissed until we were breathless, and whispered promises about not wanting to be anywhere else. And now? Nothing. Not a single text. Not a call. Not even a 'good morning' or 'made it back safe'—which he always did.School was resuming today, and I clung to the hope that I’d finally see him again. Maybe he got busy. Maybe something happened. Maybe he lost his phone. I kept telling myself that as I stood in front of the mirror, brushing my hair out of my face, trying to look less like I hadn't slept properly all week. When I stepped out of my dorm, the early January chill hit me like a slap. The sky was a dull gray, matching my mood. I pulled my jacket tighter around myself and made my way to the campus café.Ava and Mike were meeting up with me at the cafe today,

ADRIAN"Lena, you're not having second thoughts right? A few days with me, off the grid?" I asked, glancing at her from the driver’s seat. She turned to me with that little smirk that made my heart stutter. "Adrian, I packed my bags, didn't I?""You could've just been humoring me. You do that a lot." I said, I just love teasing her a lot."No, you do that a lot. I say what I mean every time." She responded, smiling.I shook my head, smiling. She had this way of shutting me down with just her words. And I loved it.We pulled into the underground parking of my condo. It wasn't massive, but it was high enough up that we had a view of the entire skyline. Not that I'd be looking at anything except her for the next few days."Welcome to the cave," I said, holding the door open for her.She walked in and dropped her bag near the couch. "It’s too clean in here. Suspiciously clean.""I had it cleaned for you."She gave me a look, and I crossed the space between us and kissed her.“So, let's ge

ADRIANThe moment I closed the door behind her, everything inside me quieted. Like the chaos in my head finally had a place to rest. She was here—actually here—and I still couldn’t believe it.I grinned, grabbing her fingers. “You know, I’ve been thinking about you nonstop.”“I know,” she murmured, and then her fingers brushed against mine. “Me too.”I wrapped my arms around her, tugging her gently against me. Her body fit perfectly, warm and soft and familiar. My chin rested on her head as I closed my eyes. Then I kissed her—slow at first, like I needed to relearn the shape of her mouth. But the moment her hands slid under my shirt, all caution melted away. Her touch was desperate, showing that she’d missed me as badly as I missed her.“Adrian…” she breathed, and I nearly lost it right there.“I missed hearing you say my name like that.” I responded, pulling her closer to me.Her fingers gripped the hem of my shirt. “Take it off.”“With pleasure, my lady.”I yanked it over my head an

AVA"Ava!" my mom shouted from downstairs. "The cows aren’t gonna milk themselves!"I woke up once again to my mom's endless errands and to the sound of chickens squawking outside my window. My body ached in places I didn’t even know could ache. I had only been home for four days, but it felt like I’d been dragging buckets of feed and scrubbing stalls for a lifetime.I groaned, swinging my legs off the bed and slipping on my boots. My phone buzzed again. I didn’t even have to look to know who it was.I was sure it was Nathan."When are you coming back?" read the text. The fourth one this morning.I didn’t respond.I tied my hair back and trudged downstairs. Mom was already in the kitchen, throwing together breakfast with her usual flurry of movement. Dad was outside, probably already fixing something broken."Morning to you, ma." I muttered."Eat something, then grab the buckets. You’ll help me with the eggs afterward," she said, like it was any regular Tuesday and not my break from s

ADRIANI’ve learned to live in two worlds. In one, I’m the respected professor at an elite institution, someone students look up to and colleagues envy in silence. But in the other world, I'm the one cloaked in shadows and silence, that’s where my real power lies.Tonight, I wasn’t Dr. Adrian Knight. Tonight, I was the man they whispered about in the underworld. The one whose name only came up in only closed rooms. I stepped out of my private elevator into the underground chamber beneath my penthouse.Three men were already waiting at the long marble table."You’re late, Don." Marco grumbled, adjusting the collar of his black suit."Is that how you address your Don? You know I don't entertain such nonsense." I replied smoothly, shrugging off my coat and tossing it to Jax, my silent shadow.“I'm sorry Don.” He responded, shifting uncomfortably.Yes, Marco was my underboss but he knew better than to question me and my movements."Any word from the Prague operation?" Dimitri, my Capo ask
