Madchen shook her long red tresses as she entered the department workroom.
Somehow, her dark red hair always had a golden sheen to it, a natural highlight she was born with, along with her striking blue green eyes. Her German-irish heritage shown through with her hair, yet she kept a surprisingly golden skin tone.
She checked herself quickly in the bathroom mirror.
She had never considered herself on the pretty side. A few freckles dotted the bridge of her delicate nose.
All her life, boys, or men had ignored her. It never really bothered her though. Through the few serious relationships she had, she realized males were only out for themselves, unless they were friends.
Guy friends she could deal with. They were less moody than females, at least some of the time.
But between the relationships with her family, and so called friends, she realized she would rather just be alone. It was much easier than risking any kind of betrayal, for that’s what people did, they cut you down for their own pleasure, taking any information one might give and using it against you.
She sighed as she smoothed her black scrub top down. That was her life, never being able to tell anyone how she felt, keeping it all inside. And what better place to live in solitude than a huge city.
With so many people coming from different backgrounds, she blended in, like a speck of dust blowing in the wind.
She smiled slightly at the reflection in the mirror. Applying a thin pink gloss to her lips, she excited the bathroom, ready to start her day.
“Ok, team, let’s get our assignments,” the supervisor said.
He handed Madchen’s workload to her with a smile, “Have a good day, little girl,” he winked at her.
Her supervisor, Jason, gave her the creeps from the day she started her new job. He always seemed to find a way to be near her, no matter what floor she was working on. The man had no sense of personal space either.
He would come up behind her, taking advantage of their height difference, and lean over her shoulder, always making her jump.
Jason also had a girlfriend in the department, Anna. This woman was a domineering bitch, treating everyone as they were peasants at her feet. She was beautiful, with shoulder length dark hair, and her dark eyes, but there was no beauty inside her soul. No, it was an empty void of conceit and anger, and she directed her wrath at everyone else.
Madchen seemed to be the object of her affections these days. Sure there were newer, prettier girls that were hired after her, but no matter what she did, she always seemed to incur the woman’s wrath.
Perhaps she could be jealous over her boyfriend stalking Madchen’s every move? It didn’t matter to the young woman, for she detested him with a passion, Madchen was only too happy when Anna showed up, pulling the lanky blonde away from her. Jason was a leech, and a pervert.
Madchen gave her supervisor a strained smile, and walked over to the other side of the room to meet up with her partner, Nick. They were assigned to the Medical Icu together.
He was the one person in the hospital she considered a friend, he and Kimber, who she hung out with at work. They were like peas in a pod, always together in their free time, during lunch and breaks.
Occasionally, they would even sneak out and partake of a cigarette, the mortal enemy of a respiratory therapist. Yes it was a terrible habit, but it eased the stress a little, and it was sun to rebel against the system.
Madchen trusted Nick the most though, he would always lend an ear to her frustrations, never divulging her secrets.
After a hard day’s work, Madchen, Nick and Kimber headed to their favorite bar, close to the beach. The sunset was beautiful as usual. They sipped on their beers as they watched it disappear into the water’s silver hues, while playing a friendly game of pool. The winner always played the next opponent.
When Madchen looked up, the strange surfer dude was gone. She shook her head and went back to nursing her drink, talking to Maya.
“What the…” Madchen was desperate. She pushed every button on the elevator, even the emergency call trying to escape “Adam”“Yes, can we help you,” came a voice through the intercom.
“Yeah boss, I found her, Yes, she’s safe, no she’s not happy, Yes I’m staying with her,no the guards didn’t give me any trouble,”“Here, he wants to talk to you,” Adam pushed the phone toward her, and she took it reluctantly.
“You’re mercenaries!”“Close enough,” the older dr gave her a knowing look.
Later on, Madchen and Nick were cuddled up on the couch, as good friends would do, with Adam keeping a watchful eye on them.“Nick?” she looked up at him,
When Madchen finally entered her department, Nick was already with Kimber. He was whispering in her ear, and she was blushing.A pang of guilt washed over Madchen. It was wrong for him to stay with her when he had a girlfriend, one who was very smitten with him. Kimber was a sweet young woman, with her long light brown hair and big blue eyes. She, too, had migrated to Miami,
They would all be together in the unit today, yes it was that busy.Madchen and Nick would split the rooms, with Kimber helping wherever needed. Several of the pt’s would have to travel to Ct, and the two core therapists wouldn’t have the time. The three of them got a report from the nightime therapists, then started their rounds together.
