At that moment, she regretted ever getting out of bed.

She had looked at his picture enough times that she figured she would spot him immediately, but as she looked around the room, he was nowhere to be found.

There were groups of people huddled around tables laughing loudly; others stood together by the pool tables and dartboards as they yelled over the music that came through the speakers.

It only took one look around the room to locate the bar where all the individual people sat alone, and she made her way to one of the open seats at the end of the bar.

Juliet grabbed her phone from her purse before putting it as a placeholder on the empty barstool next to her for him.

10:26 pm, it read.

She locked the screen again after she confirmed that there were no unread messages. She glanced back into the rest of the room and let her eyes drift from side to side as she scanned over the crowd.

"What can I get you?" A girl yelled from behind the counter. Juliet turned to the bartender and immediately felt self-conscious as she looked over the beautiful, scantily clad blonde in front of her.

The bartender's shirt did nothing to hide her breasts nor the belly button ring beneath them. She was shocked by how much skin was actually on display, and she wanted the woman as far away from her when Matthew showed up as possible.

"Vodka Cranberry, please." She said over the music, and the woman smiled at her with a slight nod as she turned to start mixing her drink. It only took a moment. When the glass was placed in front of her, Juliet let out a breath of relief as the bartender walked away to help an animated customer who had been waving her down from the other end of the bar.

Her phone lit up at that moment, and she quickly grabbed it.

Matthew: I'm here.

It said, and Juliet's head shot up to scan the room once more. She could see only one man on his phone, and her stomach instantly dropped.

He was a large man, at least twenty years her senior, with a black leather jacket that hung over his dirty, stretched-out white wife-beater. He looked up from his phone and smiled when he made eye contact with her.

The slight lift in his eyebrow made her spine stiffen. She instantly looked down and spun back to the bar to deter him from coming over.

Body odor and smoke radiated off the man as her reached her and leaned forward so he didn't have to yell.

"Hi." He shouted in her ear.

Juliet leaned away; her head only turned slightly to acknowledge that she heard him, but she kept her back to the man as much as possible without being overly rude. The man moved to her side and had stopped in the space between herself and the wall, blocking the seat she had been saving for her Matthew.

"Can I get your next drink for you?" He asked as he reached to pull out the seat that housed her purse. Her hand reached down to stop the stool from moving as she placed her palm down flat on her bag.

"I'm so sorry. Someone is sitting here." She yelled back as she ignored his question. He grunted at her as he lifted his hand from the seat and leaned forward to place it on the bar beside her instead.

As he opened his mouth again, she felt a warm arm settle across her shoulder and smooth lips pressed against her temple. A light layer of stubble prickled against her skin, and she looked up into familiar hazel eyes.

"Hey, sweetheart. I'm sorry that I'm late." His deep voice sent a shiver down her spine, and she instantly sat up straighter.

The man moved back and walked away with a grumble of irritation, taking the pungent stench of cigarettes with him. Matthew laughed lightly and dropped his arm to place his hand on her back. He pointed to the unoccupied seat as his other thumb moved back and forth across her spine. "Do you mind if I sit here?"

She quickly grabbed her purse and hung it from the hook under the bar top in front of her knees nervously.

Her eyes had a mind of their own as he moved to sit down. His black shirt was stretched across the muscles of his shoulders and chest as they flexed slightly while he pulled out the chair and slid into the seat.

Her mouth watered at the sight before her, and she quickly looked away as she felt heat creep into her cheeks.

The drink in front of her was coated in a light layer of precipitation, and she grabbed for it quickly to take a sip of the cold liquid inside.

She could feel him staring at her as he sat on the stool, facing her instead of the bar.

Once again, her bottom lip found its way between her teeth, and she was overwhelmed with the feeling of his eyes trailing over her body. He let out a deep chuckle as his hand wrapped around one of the legs on her bar stool before he slid her seat over to sit between his knees.

"I hope you don't mind. It will be better this way, rather than yelling at each other." He said as his warm breath blew across her ear, engulfing her in the smell of spearmint. Goosebumps rose from her skin, and she turned to meet his gaze. "So, you're my Juliet."

  • Dark Secrets and Dangerous Love   Epilogue 2

When his monthly calls stopped, her worry eventually outweighed her anger, and more than anything, she just wanted to hear his voice or see him one more time to know that he was okay. He called her after speaking to Cadence and was flabbergasted by the fact that she had answered the phone at all after ignoring his calls for so long. He was left speechless when she demanded that he return home so she could see he was safe for herself. Juliet watched as he bit back his emotions at hearing his mother’s voice, but he was ecstatic that he would get to introduce Juliet to the other women in his life. “We talked on the phone. Come on, you are perfect, and they will love you.” As he stepped to the side to pull her toward the entrance of the home once more, the front door was thrown open, and a beautiful blonde sprinted out with a shout of glee as she threw herself into Matthew’s arms. “Hey, sis. I’ve missed you too.” He said with a laugh as he held onto her just as tightly as she did

  • Dark Secrets and Dangerous Love   Epilogue

Juliet walked slowly across the gravel driveway with her hands down at her sides in fists to hide the fact that they were shaking. It had been a long four years, but it was also the best four years of her life. Matthew walked up behind her and placed his warm palm on her lower back, and she felt her muscles loosen at his touch. The large, beautiful ranch-style house in front of her added to the intimidation she had felt toward their current situation, and she had half a mind to run back to the car and not come out. “Relax, Red. Everything will be okay.” He bent down and whispered into her ear before he kissed the crown of her head. His hot breath fanned across her skin, and she gave a jerk as a chill ran down her spine from his proximity. It didn’t matter how long they were together. Her body still reacted like it was the first time. Sparks would dance across her skin, goosebumps would appear as they followed his lips where they trailed across her body, and her mind would melt

Juliet pushed up on her toes, wanting more, needing to be closer to him. The warm water felt nice and refreshing, but touching Matthew, being pressed against his wildly impressive form, was like touching an electric charge. She was sure that at any moment, she would be startled awake, but as Matthew stepped forward, making her move back, she felt completely out of control. Matthew didn't stop until she had her back to the cool shower wall, and he was consuming her. She lifted her leg, wrapping it around his hip, and Matthew released a deep, low groan of "Fuuuuccckkk," as he placed his tip at her entrance and slowly sank into her. They had only been apart for a few months, but it felt like ages. She welcomed him and his touch back greedily, gasping into his mouth as he pushed forward. "Tell me you're mine," Matthew insisted, thrusting quickly and taking her breath away as he entered her. "Oh my God!" Juliet cried out, her nails digging into his back, and yet, he only thru

Matthew hurried as he heard the shower turn on, eager to join his Juliet. He wanted to inspect every inch of her to see if she was telling the truth about doing better and healing, but he needed to finish locking down the house and doing mild surveillance. For the next two weeks, the U.S. Marshals would have someone posted nearby to blend in with the neighborhood as a precaution to ensure they hadn't been followed and that they were no active threat to them. Once they had, they would leave, and it would just be Matthew and Juliet all alone. He couldn't wait. He finished checking all the windows and doors, making a note of every neighbor whose windows allowed them sight into Matthew's new home, and he tried to memorize what area of the house each window granted the people in that home access to. He wanted to be sure he was fully informed and one step ahead of the enemy should they attack. The sound of Juliet dropping something made him pause, though, and he checked the lock on th

Juliet couldn't let him go even if she wanted to. Her body protested even the thought of releasing him, but Matthew seemed to feel the same way. He held her just as tightly, kissing her again deeply as if making up for lost time before a loud clearing of a throat disrupted them. "It's time to go." The Marshal said, but Juliet couldn't pull her eyes from Matthew. He walked her to the SUV and helped her inside, chuckling when she was reluctant to release him. "Let's go home," Matthew whispered, and Juliet nodded as the car was put into gear and the U.S. Marshal accelerated. "Where is home going to be?" "That information is classified." The Marshal said, and Juliet narrowed her eyes, unamused. "How is it classified when we are the ones going there?" Juliet asked, but she was fully distracted by Matthew's hand on her thigh. The heat of his touch burned through her jeans, and she leaned closer to him, her hands grabbing his arm as she tried to maintain as much contact as possible f
