Prologue

'Meet me.' The words said as they flashed across her phone. Juliet sat in her bed with the comforter tucked in and around her as she gently drifted off. The buzzing from the phone had startled her, and she quickly grabbed it with excitement, impatient to see his message.Butterflies filled her stomach as she read those two words. They had been messaging for months back and forth, calling each other every day they could. It was a love formed through words and stories. They had never met. She had never seen the man she was falling for, but she knew the sound of his voice from their phone calls. She knew the deep rumble that came from him when he laughed, the one that sent goosebumps down her spine. For months, she had been online, talking to men and going on awful dates. Each time, she came home to her apartment alone and rinsed off the memory of the few hours prior that she had wasted sitting in a restaurant or at the movies. It was a tedious effort, and for a while, she wasn't sure

'Meet me', the message had said, and Juliet was filled with butterflies as she stared at her phone. It was late, and she had already been in bed for the night, just waiting for the darkness to consume her. Yet as his message appeared on the screen, all traces of sleep left her body. Her thumbs danced along the keyboard as she typed a response and then deleted it several times. It had been a long time coming, and she was excited to finally meet Matthew. His profile only said Matt. After they had spoken for a few days, he told her he preferred to be called Matthew. He had only put a shortened version of his name online so that his work wouldn't find his account too easily. Talking to him had become a part of her regular routine. They would text throughout the day while working and call to talk most nights. She had tried to hide her fear of meeting the man who had her smitten, but her body still tensed at the thought of seeing him for the first time. They had tried to meet several tim

At that moment, she regretted ever getting out of bed. She had looked at his picture enough times that she figured she would spot him immediately, but as she looked around the room, he was nowhere to be found. There were groups of people huddled around tables laughing loudly; others stood together by the pool tables and dartboards as they yelled over the music that came through the speakers. It only took one look around the room to locate the bar where all the individual people sat alone, and she made her way to one of the open seats at the end of the bar. Juliet grabbed her phone from her purse before putting it as a placeholder on the empty barstool next to her for him.10:26 pm, it read. She locked the screen again after she confirmed that there were no unread messages. She glanced back into the rest of the room and let her eyes drift from side to side as she scanned over the crowd."What can I get you?" A girl yelled from behind the counter. Juliet turned to the bartender and

'His Juliet.'That was what he had said. She was His Juliet, and she loved it. The adrenaline that coursed through her body stemmed from his fingertips. They drew delicate circles on her spine where his arm lay on the back of her chair. "You're Matthew." She said as she turned to look at him, her face only inches from his. She watched as his eyelids lowered slightly, and he swallowed quickly. It made her happy to see that she also had an effect on him and that she wasn't the only one nervous. His eyes were locked on hers, and the pull she felt between them was deafening. It drowned out the other noise in the room until she was only aware of the two of them. She wished she could take it back and say he was her Matthew, but she was too tongue-tied to be flirty. She could barely get out the two words that she did. "I've waited a long time to meet you. Seeing you now, I wish I had just played hooky. I should have told my work that I couldn't make it in the very first time we tried t

A gentle blush rose to his cheeks as the words left his lips. "My job is very demanding, and one day, I want to leave it and settle down. For now, I just have to hope that when I find the right girl, she will wait for me, whether I'm gone for three days or three months. It can be hard, but everyone comes with baggage nowadays."She could picture it. She has always been able to.Sitting on a porch swing with a baby bump as she rocked back and forth. Her hair blowing softly in the spring air as she rubbed her hand up and down on her rounded belly, watching her husband pull up to the house with a new crib in the back seat, and a smile on his face. She wanted that life one day, but at twenty-seven, she knew that day would need to happen in the next few years, or it might not happen at all. Still, she knew the prospect of having it was not worth settling for being with someone that she couldn't fully love. She wanted to find her other half, her partner in crime, to settle down with and

Juliet curled into bed that night with the smile never leaving her face. He was more perfect than she could have ever imagined, and the feeling of his lips on hers sat heavy in the front of her mind.Matthew: Meeting you was the best decision I’ve ever made. She didn't have to grab her phone to see the message when it came through. It was already in her hands as she stared down at his picture. The evening had been the best first date she had ever had, and she knew that there was not another man in the world who would have given her a night like that one. They were connected not only emotionally but physically as well. During their date, they hadn't touched beyond his hand on her back as they sat together, but she could feel his fingertips as they drew intricate patterns on her back for hours. When he kissed her, though, her whole body lit up, and she had embraced the sparks that passed between every inch of their touching skin. After she got home, she took a quick shower to get ri

She spent the next few minutes telling her best friend about the dreamy man that shook her world the night before, leaving out the intimate details of their kiss.Their conversation was cut short by her phone vibrating from her bedroom. Her body acted on its own as she jumped from the chair and ran to collect it. Juliet felt embarrassed when she picked up her phone, and it was only her boss at the local paper. He wanted to check in on the article they contracted her to write about the opening of that new restaurant. She was getting fewer jobs each month, and she worried that she would soon need to find additional work.It was a frustrating but enjoyable profession, and she got to make her own hours. The problem was finding enough work to do in those hours to pay the bills. As companies grew, the amount of freelance work diminished, and they now had a full-time, in-office team typing up their articles and blog entries.Juliet grabbed her laptop before she solemnly walked back to the

Juliet was ready hours before Matthew arrived. She had attempted to work but kept getting lost in thoughts of the man she would spend the rest of the day with. He was a mystery to her, a puzzle. She knew the man behind the phone but did not know the man in the flesh. In a way, it almost felt as if they were two different people, and she wanted to know everything she could about the real Matthew. Her article had been written and sent to her contact at the paper just moments before she heard a knock at the

It felt as though a bucket of ice water had been thrown over her as she heard her roommate's voice. Faster than she thought possible, Matthew dropped his hand to his side, grabbing at the air as he turned around to face Natalie. After looking her over once, he turned back to Juliet and brushed her hair back into place. She grabbed his outstretched hand as he pulled her back onto the sidewalk only a foot away.Juliet knew she would blush, but she had no idea how red she had truly become under her best friend's stare. She looked up in time to see Natalie's brown eyes as they moved to trail up and down Matthew's body. "Are you going to introduce us, or are you still trying to catch your breath?" Natalie was the kind of woman that Juliet admired for her confidence. She would say or do anything that came to her mind and was never ashamed of it. It was only noon, and she had already been enjoying her day off with a midday drink, which reflected in the darkness of her lips. As she stood in

It took just under twenty minutes to reach the restaurant.Juliet didn't notice. She was doing her best not to squirm from the feeling his hand sent through her. She had been tempted to grab it the entire ride, to interlace her fingers with his. To do anything that would get her mind off of him touching her like that so she could think clearly, but as the rough pad of his thumb moved back and forth against her leg, she was lost, with no sense of time or direction. She felt the sensation run up her thigh, and she briefly wished he would pull over so they could continue what he had started at her apartment building. He was a perfect gentleman. She thought bitterly when his hand remained in its place. Juliet felt silly for thinking that when she had only known him in person for less than twenty-four hours. It was unusual that she felt this way for someone after only one date. Normally, she didn't want anything more than to hold hands or kiss until she got to know them better. She was
