Not the gentle kind. The kind that hurt. Fire licked at her frozen nerves, stirring them awake, Her blood remembering how to move and pulse, her lungs scraping themselves raw. Estelle gasped as her eyes shot open. An unfamiliar ceiling entered her line of sight. “ You are finally awake, I was just starting to lose my patience.“ Estelle heard a familiar voice. ‘ So it wasn't a dream.’ Estelle thought. Turning her head towards the source of sound, she saw a pair of luminous blue eyes staring at her from a dark corner. “ A...Adrian...“ Her voice cracked. Followed by a snarl, she felt her wolf coming out. Probably out of rage. “Don’t shift.” Adrian warned her. “Your body won’t survive it yet.” Estelle groaned in pain, while Adrian's eyes glinted with dark amusement. He seemed... to enjoy her suffering? Then the memories came flooding back: the snow, the hurrid cold, the chains and his arms carrying her out of death. Her golden eyes squinted as she surveyed her surroundings. Stone ceiling, wooden floors and wooden walls. heavy animal furs. A fire roaring in a hearth big enough to stand in. The air smelled like pine, iron, sulphur and wolf. This wasn't Silvervale. Silvervale smelled like blood and pine. This was Frostveil. The enemy's territory. She tried to sit up and regretted it instantly. Her injuries throbbed, the traitor’s brand on her chest pulsed. Her wrists were wrapped in linen, not silver, but the burns underneath still throbbed. But it seemed the wolfsbane in her system was almost neutralized. “Welcome to Frostveil my esteemed guest.” Adrian said. He wasn’t in a dark corner anymore. He stood by the fire, sleeves rolled up, forearms streaked with soot and what looked like dried blood. “The healers said you’d either wake or you wouldn’t. Seems like you’re the same stubborn woman I know.” Estelle tiredly dragged the fur higher, suddenly aware she wore nothing but a long shirt that smelled like him. “Where are my clo—” “Burned.” he cut her off. ' Does that mean he saw my...' Estelle shook her head to get rid of unnecessary thoughts. Adrian turned towards her and she could see him clearly this time. He wore no cloak now. Just a dark henley and stood there with the kind of stillness that made him look like a fearsome scarecrow. The scar through his eyebrow caught the firelight. Up close, his eyes weren’t just pale. They looked like they had blue fire flickering in them. Estelle's glared at Adrian fiercely. “You saved me.” They way she spoke made it sound like an accusation. “I took you,” Adrian corrected. “ and I claimed you...." He added again while taking a step closer. Estelle gritted her teeth. She didn't like the way Adrian said he claimed her. She wasn't his property. It would have been better if he left her there, not save her! She hated it. “ Estelle, If you are feeling disgusted that I saved you then know I didn't do that out kindness. You should know better than that.“ Adrian spoke as if he heard her thoughts. “Then why?” Her voice was still hoarse. “ Our packs have been at war with each other for decades, and I’m Silvervale’s—” “Silvervales’s nothing.” he said flatly . “Not anymore. Not to the same place that discarded you like trash.” He crossed the room in three, large strides and set a clay cup on the table by her bed. Steam rose hypnotically from it. “Drink. It will give you some strength.” He said while turning around again to stare at the fire. Estelle stared at Adrian's back, thinking of how satisfying it would feel to stab her claws into it and tear it apart. In the end she suppressed that thought and reached for the cup. It was some kind of broth. She slowly brought it to her mouth but paused. Her nose twitching slightly as she sniffed. Then a deep voice shook her eardrums. " It's not poisoned. I need you alive." Estelle exhaled and closed her eyes. She hated this man with every second that passed by. Steeling herself, she brought the cup to her dark red lips and drank. The broth burned going down. Energy seeped into her body with every gulp Placing the cup on her thighs, she stared at it for a while before she spoke. “ What do you want from me. Am sure, and I know you didn't save me for no reason.“ Adrian went still, then he glanced over his shoulder and spoke with a smile. “ You will know when you recover, for now.... rest.“ Estelle pressed her lips into a thin line. She felt uneasy at the face of Adrian's hospitality. His 'kindness' unsettled her. She would have preferred it if he treated her badly. Two of them were enemies, not allies for goodness sake. “ But why bother? Why Adrian?” Her golden eyes met his. “Why pull a Silvervale heir out of the snow?“ she couldn't understand why the man didn't kill her the moment he had a chance. Adrian went still. However she could feel a faint trace of bloodlust linger in the air before vanishing. His fist clenched. He was quiet for so long she thought he wouldn’t answer. Until his lips curved into a sardonic smile: “Because I’ve seen what your family calls justice, Estelle.“ His chest heaved once. “ My sister wore a brand like yours when they sent her body back to me ten years ago.” He said with a low growl that made the walls of the shake slightly. The wooden floor beneath his feet cracked sending splinters flying. Estelle's words died in her throat as she lowered her head. “I will repeat this, Estelle...“Adrian said, voice low. “ I did not save you out of kindness. No. I didn't." Then he walked to towards her. Estelle only stared at him plainly. When he was close enough he grabbed a fistful of her raven black hair and tugged her head backwards, veins pulsed on his thick forearms as he did so. Estelle held back a wince. She stared defiantly into Adrian's eyes. He leaned so close Estelle could fell his warm breath on his face. “ Am glad you fell into my hands Estelle, oh... am really glad you did.“ He closed his eyes and sucked in a sharp breath. “Because am going to do a lot of things to you... A lot.“ He snarled. Estelle breathing rhythm changed. Her canines elongated out of rage. She felt deep regret she didn't have the strength to scar this man's face. Adrian leaned back and let go of her hair. “ I can't wait for you to fully recover, Estelle. We going have to have a lot of fun together. You... and I. “ His eyes glowed crimson. Estelle's eyes did the same, albeit a little weaker, because she was injured. Adrian smiled at her defiance. He turned to leave, but paused at the door. Without looking back, he warned “ Don't try to escape my little wolf. It won't do any good. And if you try to die, I will drag you back from hell.“ The door shut with a small bang. Estelle fell back into the bed with a plop, her chest heaving. She thought of Adrian's words and clenched her fist in frustration. She took deep breathes to calm her wild heart and closed her eyes. She wondered what her enemy was going to demand from her. But that wasn't her concern as of now. She had to focus on recovering back to full health. Now that she was given a second chance, she wanted to utilize it to the fullest. Even if that second chance was given to her by the man she hated.Adrian crossed the final stretch between the outer district and Frostveil Castle in a series of tremendous leaps. His entire focus remained fixed upon the woman resting quietly in his arms. The mask had long since been removed from her face, allowing him to see her clearly. At some point during the short journey to the castle, Estelle's shoulders had stopped trembling. The tears that had stained her cheeks had dried beneath the relentless wind, but her eyelashes were still damp.Judging by the slow, steady rhythm of her breathing, she had fallen asleep. The battle had drained her far more than he had initially realized. Both her body and mind had been put under great strain, and now exhaustion had wore her down, pulling her to sleep. Her face rested against his chest while one hand remained loosely clenched around his clothing. Even in sleep, she had not let go of him.Adrian's cold eyes scrutinized Estelle's face. This was the very woman who had once sought to kill him. The same defi
The massive black wolf leading Frostveil's forces abruptly slowed.Behind him, hundreds of werewolves followed suit. Snow exploded beneath their paws as they skidded across the frozen plains, carving deep trenches into the frozen ground. The wolf leaped and shifted mid air. It dark fur receded and it's size shrank. Moments later, a man landed upon the snow in human form. His pale blue eyes immediately swept across the snowy plains. Then his steps slowed down. The sight before Adrian wasn't what he had expected when he came rushing back from the south. When the deadly battle with the rogue werewolves had neared it's conclusion, the remainder of them had gleefully told Adrian that they were just a decoy and Frostveil was currently under siege. This made Adrian almost lose control on the spot. After mercilessly finishing them off, he and his pack had rushed back in futile hopes of making back in time. He had concluded that whoever was attempting to raid Frostveil when he was away would
A deafening boom rang out across the battlefield as a Beta crashed violently into the snow. Moments later, another warrior was hurled through the air before slamming into a tree hard enough to knock him unconscious on impact.Minutes passed, accompanied by an endless chorus of pained grunts, breaking wood, and bodies crashing into the frozen landscape.Near the western gates, the Frostveilian soldiers stood rooted to the spot in stunned disbelief. These were men and women who had marched here fully prepared to lay down their lives defending their home, yet none of them could believe what they were witnessing.A single woman was holding back an entire invasion force by herself.No.Holding back was the wrong phrase. She was effortlessly destroying them. One after another, Silvervale's warriors were sent crashing into the snow, trees, and even their own comrades. The werewolves fell, No matter how many charged her, the outcome remained unchanged. The battlefield had become a spectacle of
“ Remember, our objective is simple.”Near Frostveil's western border, a tall werewolf marched at the head of the formation. His voice carried effortlessly across the snow-covered plains, reaching every warrior behind him.“ Inflict as much damage upon Frostveil as possible.”A cruel smile spread across his face.“ Burn what you can. Destroy what you cannot take. And if an opportunity presents itself...” His eyes gleamed with malice. “ Bring back as many women and children as possible. Perhaps even Frostveil's new Luna... if she's here, that is.”"Understood, sir!"The surrounding Betas answered in unison, their voices echoing across the frozen landscape. That last part hadn't been included in the official mission, but Darius had secretly instructed them to do it if the opportunity arose.“ Good. Another grim reminder.... We have at most forty minutes before Frostveil's main forces return."The leading Alpha's grin widened.“ Perhaps if one of the women we bring back catches Lord Dari
Estelle stood frozen like a statue. A bitter feeling rose within her chest, spreading through her like poison. The wolves she had grown up with and the same wolves who had bled beside her.She should have been happy to see the pack that belonged to the place she once called home.Yet as she stared at the approaching force, she felt nothing resembling relief or joy. If she were to describe what she felt, it would be something close to numbness. The sight that should have filled her with familiarity left a hollow ache lingering deep inside her chest instead. The silver cloaks fluttering in the wind. The insignias she had spent her entire life revering...All of it felt distant and unfamiliar, As though she were looking upon fragments of a life that no longer belonged to her.For a brief moment, memories surfaced. The camaraderie she felt as she crouched low along with her pack as they stalked prey.Victory celebrations that stretched long into the night. The countless missions she had u
“ Take me to the roof. There's something I want to inspect there.” Darnon's gaze lingered on her briefly. This was the first time Estelle had ordered him. Maybe she noticed something? He bowed slightly. “ As you wish.” The two of them moved through the castle without another word. The higher they climbed, the quieter everything became. The heartbeats of servants slowly became distant. The steady breathing of the guards faded. Only the distant howl of the wind remained. Several minutes later, they emerged onto the highest section of the castle. They were greeted with the cold air that brushed past the rooftop. The castle's rooftop was a masterpiece of dark and formidable architecture. Several towers rose from different sections of the fortress, their obsidian bodies stretching toward the heavens like black sentinels standing eternal watch over Frostveil. Some were broad and imposing, while others were slender and elegant, connected by elevated walkways and narrow ston
Estelle remained outside until dusk. What had begun as a simple attempt to clear her mind had turned into hours of wandering and exploration throughout Frostveil's settlement. She visited bustling markets. Sampled foods she had never tasted before. Chatted with a few locals. Listened to mu
Estelle and Adrian stared at each other in silence. The look of shock and disbelief was plastered on the face of the former while the latter had an unreadable expression. Neither moved, Neither spoke. ——————————————————— The irony of the situation was almost laughable. The very man whose sce
Estelle awoke to warmth. For several blissful moments, she lingered in that hazy realm between sleep and wakefulness, unwilling to open her eyes. The bed beneath her was perfect. Neither too soft or too hard. It's plush surface tempting her to remain where she was for another hour. The thick blank
In a dark room, on a king sized bed, a handsome man lay, peacefully asleep. Nothing disturbed the darkness. Well, except for a suspicious lump of blanket on the corner of the bed. It lay there, motionless. Oh... Wait... It wasn't actually motionless at all.It was moving so slowly it gave an impres
