“Last night was a mistake. Don’t tell anyone, or you’ll regret it.” Those were Leonard’s words after spending the night with Roberta Arantes—the ugliest girl in college. What was supposed to remain a secret spread through campus, and Roberta faced humiliation and rejection from everyone, even her best friend. But she had a plan. She refused to stay a victim—so she hired Miguel Carrascal, a charming and mysterious man, to pretend to be her boyfriend. What began as a scheme to spark jealousy and reclaim control over her life quickly turned into a tangled web of secrets, lies, and unexpected passions.

I sighed, rubbing my eyes against the brightness that was flooding the room. The smell of sweat, alcohol, and men's cologne hit me before my eyes could focus. My gaze collided with a bare, hard chest, Leonard's perfection hovering over me.
I raised my eyes slowly. Leonard was there, just a few inches away.
Shit! The whisper was trapped in my throat. I looked down and found myself naked, wrapped in a thin sheet. The light from the window was burning, and the slight discomfort, that sharp, painful throb in my legs, gave me certainty. I had thrown my virginity out the window for the man I loved.
My hands clenched the sheet. He leaned in, and I froze. I stared into his blue eyes, now cold, and his brown hair that fell across his face. His warm scent brought back the memory of the night before.
“Did you hear what I said, girl?” His jaw was locked, the bone protruding in irritation.
He rested his hands on the bed, and the mattress sank. The muscles in his arms tensed beneath the taut skin.
I averted my gaze. He had never spoken a word to me in all the years we had studied together, until we both ended up inside this room.
“Yes,” I shrank back. My heart plummeted to my stomach. “Even if I tell, who will believe it? It will sound like a bad joke.”
He gave me one last inexpressive look before stepping away and grabbing the pair of sneakers near the bed. When he nodded and said nothing more, I understood that he had believed me. My head snapped to the side, his breathing heavy and ragged.
“Aren't you curious to know what happened?” I asked, but he continued to pick up his clothes scattered on my bedroom floor with unusual speed. “I was entering the room when you grabbed me and shoved me inside. Your lips touched mine, and the sweet, nauseating taste of alcohol flooded my mouth…”
“I don't want to know!” he shouted, rubbing his face with his hands. His voice was raw. “I… I don't remember anything from last night. It's better if it stays that way.”
A bitter smile crossed my lips when I saw the regret on his face. I had thought that, after that night, everything might be different, that I would finally have someone to share my love with. I was wrong.
“It's better that none of this leaves this room and that you don't spread lies about me.” His voice was hoarse and loud, and the aggression made me recoil. He took a step towards me. “I have a girlfriend, and she can't know what happened here.”
“Girlfriend?” I choked on his words.
“Vivian,” his voice sounded soft and full of regret. “She is my girlfriend.”
“No…” I whimpered, tears welling up in my eyes.
How could my best friend be the girlfriend of the man I had loved since I started college?
My eyes widened. My head snapped toward Leonard searching for confirmation, but he just lowered his chin, his shoulders slumping as he bent down to grab the rest of his things and leave my room, slamming the door shut.
When the door closed, I ran to the bathroom and threw up everything that was left from the night before. The world spun around me as I tried to stand up. Tears continued to stream down my face, and I couldn't stop them.
I fell to the cold floor, hugging my knees. What had happened? I was no longer a virgin. I had offered my body to a man who was dating my best friend without me having any idea that was happening. The pain twisted my stomach, squeezing my abdomen tightly. I stayed there for long minutes, feeling the nausea fade and be replaced by a frightening emptiness.
I pushed the pain into a dark corner. Not only that, but I took a quick shower and got dressed, checking the time. I had important exams that morning. I hid the pain and the memories and rushed out of the room.
As I walked down the hallway, a loud murmur echoed from every corner. They were laughing. When I looked up, everyone was staring at me. I tried to figure out what was wrong, besides my large-framed glasses and the baggy clothes that covered my body.
My body froze when I saw Vivian in Leonard's arms. I swallowed a sob.
“It was just sex, Vivian, I swear.” He approached her and kissed her lips. “I want you, and no other girl matters to me now.”
Vivian snarled, running her hands through her hair as she screamed in frustration. I turned my back, ready to escape the pain of seeing them together, when she yelled my name. I gasped as the hallway fell into a deathly silence.
Not only that, but I turned around to look into the eyes of the woman, now standing in front of me.
“Roberta…” she called me with a shaky voice. “Did Leonard really sleep with you? I mean, seriously, could that have actually happened?”
I opened my lips to say what was going on when she raised her arm. A sharp slap echoed across my face. I felt my cheek burn, the acute pain spreading to my neck. My glasses flew away. I could barely see without them.
“Are you feeling special now that Leonard slept with you?” The colleagues around laughed. “You are nothing. You will never be anyone. And, after today, you will regret studying at this university.”
I noticed the malicious joy in Vivian's expression.
My eyes closed, and I wished for it all to be a mistake, that Vivian and Leonard were not dating. She had been my only friend for months and was the only one who knew how much I loved Leonard and desired to be by his side.
“How long have you two been together?” My voice cracked, a tear ready to run down my face. “How long have you been dating, and I didn't know?”
“I don't know what you mean by that.” Vivian's smile widened, cold and slow. She leaned in and kissed his lips. That made my heart explode in my chest. “But, if you want to know, we are getting married in a month, and you will be my guest of honor.”
I was too stunned to speak. My unfocused eyes were on Vivian and the malicious smile that remained on her face.
Leonard grabbed her hand, intending to lead her away.
Vivian, however, turned to look at me one last time.
“How do you feel knowing that I am going to marry the man you love and that he is disgusted by you?”
POV RobertaA smug smile appeared on Vivian’s lips the moment she stopped in front of me. Her eyes drifted toward Miguel. She licked her lips, not caring that Leonard stood beside her and might interpret her gesture as vulgar. She extended her wine glass toward me.“Take it as an apology for not believing you.” Her eyes were still cruel; she didn’t even try to hide it.“You know better than anyone that I don’t drink.”“Oh, come on, Roberta,” she rolled her eyes and laughed. “You don’t have to drink it; just take it and toast with me, for old times’ sake and for my engagement.”I looked into her eyes, knowing exactly what she was trying to do. Vivian had pretended to be my friend all this time just to show everyone she was better than Regina at manipulating people. Overall, it was nothing more than a ridiculous contest between the two most popular girls in college, and I was their toy.I took the glass, my fingers brushing the icy surface, the smell of alcohol filling my nose. I watche
POV RobertaThe man beside me turned his gaze toward the road ahead. I pressed my body against the seat as the car drove along the palm-lined avenues and entered the residence where the engagement party would take place.Miguel nodded toward the house and said,“This place is gorgeous.”But he didn’t answer my last question. It should have been obvious to him, considering I was paying a high amount for his services. So why did he seem so reluctant about the idea?I glanced around the car, wondering if maybe the agency provided vehicles like this to impress clients. Miguel truly looked like a wealthy man. He had impressed Vivian, and I was too. No matter how hard I tried not to look at him, my eyes sparkled every time they landed on that perfectly sculpted face. The ride to the house was silent. I felt embarrassed for making such a request. I had never imagined that a luxury escort could actually feel offended for doing his job.He found a parking spot near the entrance and turned off
POV Miguel Carrascal“This is your rich boyfriend?”I turned my head and saw a young woman standing behind me, her eyes wide and her mouth open, unable to believe what she was seeing. I held Roberta’s hand, intertwining my fingers with hers, and she trembled at my touch.“Nice to meet you. I’m Miguel Carrascal,” I said, extending my hand politely, having no idea who she was. “Judging by the dress, you must be the bride.”“Carrascal? From Carrascal Enterprises?” she asked, her expression intensifying. “How can you be her boyfriend?”The disgusted look she gave Roberta made many things clear to me. I glanced at Roberta, standing by my side, and noticed her shrinking into herself. Sure, she wasn’t dressed appropriately, and her clothes dulled the sparkle in her eyes, but she wasn’t as plain as she anticipated.“Is there a problem with me being her boyfriend?” I asked, realizing Roberta wouldn’t defend herself. She smiled, her face turning red, clearly embarrassed by my question.“It’s a
POV RobertaI wiped the sweat from my forehead as soon as I stopped at the bus stop. My breath came in short, uneven gasps, and the exhaustion from running almost an entire block forced me to lean forward, desperate to catch the air escaping my lungs. The moon hung high in the sky, casting its glow across the night. I glanced over my shoulder to make sure no one familiar had followed me, then spotted the bus that would take me back to campus arriving on the other side of the street. I only realized what time it was when I finally collapsed into a seat. The bus was empty. The first thing that crossed my mind was that man’s eyes. The hair on the back of my neck didn’t stand up, I didn’t imagine a future with him, and I didn’t feel the same rush of adrenaline I had when I first saw Leonard. Still, I couldn’t deny how incredibly handsome he was.Even I would have doubted that a man as striking as he could ever date a simple woman like me. But he was only an escort, and I was paying a fort
POV Miguel Carrascal I frowned, my body visibly tensing. In front of me stood the girl with the oversized glasses, dressed in an oddly mismatched way, unmistakably pointing her finger at me.Her words echoed in my head: “I want that man. I’ll pay for him to be my fake boyfriend for a month.”“Excuse me.” I shoved my phone into my pocket and walked toward her, glancing around to make sure she wasn’t talking to anyone else in the lounge. “You must be mistaken.”Gregory’s eyes immediately landed on me. He stammered, trying to clear up the misunderstanding, but the girl’s impatient voice cut him off.“Listen, I don’t have much time. The man who humiliated me publicly is getting engaged tomorrow. I said I’d bring my rich boyfriend. I can’t show up empty-handed.”Did this girl seriously think I was some kind of accessory she could carry around?“Miss, I think there’s been a mistake.” My gray eyes narrowed at her. I tried to take a step forward, but Gregory raised a hand, blocking me.“You
Leonard and Vivian were together.I still blamed myself for letting her deceive me for so long. Now my lie forced me to act. I needed to restore my reputation, and the only way to do that was to appear in public with a man everyone believed was my boyfriend, an important, wealthy man.The engagement party was tomorrow, and I still hadn’t found the man to play the part. I doubted any decent man would agree to be seen with a woman like me, but it was too late to back out. Everyone on campus was talking about it.I went into my room, trying to focus, but my phone lit up with a new notification:“Premium Escort Services. Find your perfect match for exclusive events.”I grabbed my phone. I had signed up for that days ago, in a moment of despair. Immediately, I wrote down the address and started getting ready.I grabbed my bag and stuffed inside the card with all my savings. I didn’t check references or verify the website’s safety. Not only that, but I only looked at the address and the mon
