Chapter 2

Author: Tranquil Phoenix
Joel explained, "I got soaked, so…"

"Evan, don't interrogate him like he's some criminal." Queenie stood up, shielding Joel behind her. "I barely managed to calm him down. You have no idea what happened. When I got to him, he was sobbing his eyes out over a movie—"

"What did you say?" Evan stared at her, his chest suddenly feeling as if something were jammed in it. "You ditched my parents and me to rush back here… just because he was crying over a movie?"

Queenie faltered. "Yes, I did. Evan, you don't get it…"

"Damn right I don't." Evan nodded. "I don't get anything. You two are soulmates who are perfectly in sync, and everything between you is pure and innocent, right? So it's perfectly fine that he's wearing my pajamas and holding my girlfriend in his arms!"

He turned to Joel. "But has it ever crossed your mind that what you're doing is no different from being a homewrecker?"

As soon as the words left Evan's mouth, Joel broke down.

"Enough! Just stop! Evan, why are you saying that about me? I've only ever seen Queenie as a friend, someone who really gets me! Am I not even allowed to have one friend I can turn to for help?

"Just because you two are dating, I'm not allowed to talk to her anymore? Fine, then! I'll leave! Queenie, I'll never come to you again. From now on, we're no longer friends!"

He turned to charge into the bedroom to change out of the borrowed clothes, but Queenie grabbed his arm. "Don't go. It's so late, and it's pouring outside. Where are you even gonna go?"

Joel let out a bitter laugh. "Anywhere's better than here. I'm not staying just to be called a homewrecker. Just leave me alone, Queenie. I don't wanna ruin things between you and Evan. As for our promise… just forget about it."

"Calm down, okay? I'll handle this." Queenie's voice was unbearably gentle when she faced him. But the second she looked at Evan, her tone turned ice-cold. "Evan, apologize."

"What for?"

"For calling Joel a homewrecker. Don't you think you owe him an apology?"

Evan stared at her, his gaze frosty. "I'm not wrong. I'm not apologizing. Queenie, we're over."

He turned to go back to the bedroom, but Queenie grabbed his wrist, her eyes devoid of warmth. "We can talk about breaking up later. Right now, I want you to apologize to Joel."

Her grip on his wrist hurt. Evan asked, "And what if I don't?"

"Then get the hell out! Don't stand here and make things worse for Joel. Can you live with yourself if he spirals and hurts himself?"

Outside, the rain beat down, and thunder rumbled overhead. Queenie knew Evan hated thunderstorms more than anything, yet she told him to get out.

They'd been together for five years and had lived together for three. Even now, he remembered the day they moved in as if it were yesterday. She'd keyed in the new lock code on the door and said, "The code's your birthday. This will always be your home. I love you, Evan. I'll love you for the rest of my life."

"What if we fight someday? Will you kick me out?"

"Of course not. We'll be together forever."

Evan's thoughts were shattered by another crack of thunder. He nodded. "Fine. I'll get lost."

He went into the bedroom, quickly packed his things, and dragged the suitcase toward the door. Just as he was about to shut the door behind him, he heard Joel's small, guilty voice drift from the living room. "Queenie, isn't this kinda harsh? Evan's gonna be really hurt."

"It's fine. He'll work through it on his own. Your feelings matter more. Are you still feeling bad?"

"A little. My chest feels tight."

"Then let me hold you a bit longer. Didn't you say my hugs help you calm down?"

Evan turned back and saw Queenie and Joel wrapped in each other's arms again. In that moment, something inside him died for good.

After the door closed, he pulled out his phone and called his boss.

"Mr. Wood, do you remember the overseas assignment you wanted to send me on? I've made up my mind. I'll go."

"Seriously? Aren't you worried your hotshot CEO girlfriend won't let you go?"

"We broke up. I only have one condition—I'm taking my parents with me."

"Alright. Consider it done. Get ready to leave in three days."

"Joel… Don't do this. Don't make it any worse." Queenie forced the words out, her voice shaking. "Please, let Evan go.""Even now, you're still defending him? Do you love him that much? Fine, then. I'll send him straight to hell. You can keep each other company on the way down." Joel snatched the gun off the floor and aimed it at Evan. That was when the cops burst in and tackled him to the floor. "Freeze! Drop it!""Let me go! Let me kill Evan!" Joel yelled."I said don't move!"A gun barrel dug into Joel's forehead, and he finally calmed down. He snapped out of the haze of fury that had gripped him. When he saw Queenie lying in a pool of blood, the realization of what he'd just done hit him. He'd pulled the trigger and killed her."How did this happen? I didn't mean to." He shook his head over and over, tears running down his face. "Let me go, please. I swear I didn't mean to do it!""Take him away." The police dragged him away.An ambulance screamed up a moment later. If Queenie hadn't cheated and gotten tangled up with Joel, things never would've turned out like this. Now, Evan had already bowed out and walked away, yet she'd dragged him back into danger. She was even saying stuff like she'd rather die than let him die.He didn't know how to feel about that. His emotions were in such a mess that he couldn't get a single word out.Joel, on the other hand, was set off by what Queenie had just said. He deftly flicked the safety, then aimed at her right leg and pulled the trigger without hesitation. The bullet pierced her calf. She screamed as searing pain knifed through her. Her leg gave out, and she collapsed into a half-kneel on the floor."Queenie!" Evan panicked. "Are you okay?""I'm fine. Don't be scared," she said. She hadn't expected Joel to actually shoot. She stared at him and demanded, "Do you even realize what you're doing? I already called the cops. If you don't want them to haul you off, you still have time to walk away now."Cons

Evan hadn't expected Queenie to be so persistent. She just wouldn't give up. The calm he had just managed to regain instantly curdled into something foul."All your coworkers have gone home for dinner. Why haven't you? Your stomach's always been bad. If you don't eat, it's gonna start hurting again," she said."Queenie." Evan shook his head, baffled. "What do you actually want from me? Can't you just leave me alone? I'm begging you, okay?""I'm just worried about you. I wanna make it up to you in my own way." Queenie dropped her gaze, her tone unusually humble. "I know I've done so many things wrong, but I really don't wanna give up on you just like that. I love you. You're the love of my life. It was true in the past, and it will stay true in the future.""Love?" Evan let out a bitter laugh. "Your so-called love isn't something I can bear. I just wanna live my own life, Queenie. Please stop showing up and messing with it. You say you love me, right? Well, I don't love you anymore.

"Joel," Colin said."Colin?" Joel's smile turned disdainful when he saw Colin. "You can afford to drink here?""Are you okay?" There was something off about him, and Colin couldn't help asking."I'm fine. Why would anything be wrong with me?"Joel turned to leave. After a few steps, he suddenly looked back and said to Colin, "Oh, right. Do me a favor and warn your buddy that I'm not letting him off the hook. He can run to the ends of the earth, but I'll still find him."With that, he walked away, cold and resolute.Colin felt his hair stand on end as he watched Joel stalk off. He thought that Joel seemed like a totally different person, and a scary one at that.People always said love could turn into hate. It sure seemed true now.Without hesitating, he pulled out his phone and called Queenie. It was daytime where she was, so she picked up right away."Colin?""Queenie, listen up. I wasn't going to call you at all, but I can't reach Evan.""What's going on? Spit it out.""I

The woman said, "Hey there, handsome. You alone? Want me to keep you company for a few drinks?""Get lost," Joel said impatiently. "Do you know who I am? You've got some nerve, getting in my way!""Heh. I'm sure everyone in this bar knows who you are." The woman laughed. "You're Joel Lodge, the Lodge family's heir… though you look more like a defeated stray than anything now."I heard that after Queenie dumped you, she terminated all business deals with the Lodge family. Your mom kicked you out and even wants to disown you. Honestly, what was all of this for?"She reached out and gripped Joel's chin. "Queenie Stone might be blind, but I'm not. How about you get with me instead? I can help you with whatever you want, whether it's money or getting anything done."Joel sobered up slightly. He lifted his eyes and studied the woman before him. She was Yvonne Ward, the heiress of the Ward family, who also had some standing in Jerviston. His parents had kicked him out, so he had nowhere

"You're wrong. I've been doing just fine." Evan let out a cold laugh. "But whether I'm doing fine or not has nothing to do with you."He stepped into the nursing home. The moment Arthur saw him, he ran over like an excited child. "Evan! It's my son. He's here!""Yes, Dad. Tomorrow's the weekend. I came to take you home," Evan said. The weather in Svitzana had turned chilly, so he wrapped a scarf around Arthur's neck and held his hand as they headed toward home. They'd barely walked a few steps when Arthur suddenly grew agitated. "It's her! She's the one who killed your mother! Evan, your mom is dead! Your mom was killed by her! Murderer! You murderer!"He grabbed a stone from the ground and hurled it hard toward where Queenie was standing. She didn't move. She stood there, back straight, and took the blow. The stone smashed into her forehead, making it swell instantly. The nursing home staff rushed over and grabbed Arthur by the arms. "The patient is having an episode. Quick, gi
