Chapter 3

Author: Tranquil Phoenix
After he hung up, Evan walked out of the villa into the pouring rain. The place was so remote that no matter how many times he tried, he just couldn't get a cab.

He dragged his suitcase along the road for what felt like forever before he finally came across a cab. Once he got in, the driver glanced at him in the rearview mirror, worried. "Kid, it's this late, and you're walking around out here? Aren't you afraid something might happen? You gotta watch yourself when you're out alone."

The emotions Evan had been barely holding back finally crashed over him. He buried his face in his hands and broke down. Five years together, and in the end he still couldn't compete with a childhood friend.

"Where are you headed, kid?" the driver asked.

Evan couldn't answer. For a moment, he genuinely didn't know where he could even go. He couldn't go back to his parents' place right now. He knew that showing up like this would only make them worry.

He thought of his best friend, Colin Lane. "Take me to Montesso Residences, please."

"Got it."

By the time they pulled up at the complex gate, Colin was already waiting there with an umbrella. He frowned when he saw Evan soaked to the bone and dragging a suitcase. "What the hell happened to you? How'd you end up like this?"

"I broke up with Queenie."

"Huh?" Colin was taken aback. "That bad? You two have been together for five years, and it's over just like that? Why?"

"I'll tell you inside."

After Evan showered, Colin brought him a glass of hot water. "Drink this and warm up a bit. You don't wanna catch a cold."

Evan was so moved that he pulled him into a hug. "Thanks, man. I'm really lucky to have you."

"No biggie. Don't be so sappy. Honestly, Queenie's been pretty good to you. I'm sure that guy you saw her with really is just a friend."

Evan shook his head. "You don't get it."

"Yeah, I don't. But hey—I'm your friend, and I'll always take your side. It's late, so try to get some sleep."

Evan lay in bed for a long time. His head was spinning, and he felt awful. In a daze, he heard voices right by his ear.

"Hey, you're here. Queenie, what the hell? How could you let Evan catch you two in each other's arms like that? If you're gonna cuddle, at least be careful. He was bound to find out sooner or later with you two doing it out in the open like that!"

It was Colin's voice. What was he talking about? Bound to find out what?

Queenie sighed. "I got impatient. Joel was in a bad place, and I just wanted to comfort him. I didn't think Evan would come home right then."

Joel kept his head down. "I'm sorry, Queenie. Maybe we should just stop this. I really don't wanna be the other man. I don't want everyone to be hurting like this."

"Don't talk like that," Colin said, trying to comfort him. "You're sick. You can't always control yourself. And come on—you and Queenie have been together for over a year now. Are you really willing to walk away just like that?"

Evan went rigid. For a second, he wondered if he was hearing things.

Queenie and Joel were actually together? And for over a year? Colin knew, and he'd been helping them hide it from him?

Evan had known Colin for almost 20 years. Colin had always been Evan's best friend, the first person he thought of whenever something went wrong. And he'd been lying to Evan this whole time.

Evan slowly opened his eyes. "Colin… so you betrayed me, too?"

"Evan, I can explain!" Colin panicked when he realized that Evan was awake. "We kept it from you because we were afraid you couldn't handle it. You know Joel's depressed. He can't handle aggravation. Look, it's been over a year, and you never suspected a thing. Just… just pretend you still don't know."

Evan laughed. "Joel, you're disgusting. I can't believe you had the nerve to say you're not a homewrecker. You make me sick, too, Queenie. You knew he was the other man, and you still made me apologize to him!"

"Evan…" Queenie's heart ached when she saw his eyes redden. "I never meant to lie to you. Joel told me he'd liked me for a long time, and he only asked to be by my side. He didn't want anything else. He's sick, and I can't just abandon him. Can you understand that?

"Look, don't worry about it. You're the one I love most. We're getting married next month, remember? If you're willing, the wedding will go on as planned. You'll always be my husband."

Evan lifted a hand and pointed straight at Joel. "Fine. We can get married as long as you promise you'll never see Joel again."

"Joel… Don't do this. Don't make it any worse." Queenie forced the words out, her voice shaking. "Please, let Evan go.""Even now, you're still defending him? Do you love him that much? Fine, then. I'll send him straight to hell. You can keep each other company on the way down." Joel snatched the gun off the floor and aimed it at Evan. That was when the cops burst in and tackled him to the floor. "Freeze! Drop it!""Let me go! Let me kill Evan!" Joel yelled."I said don't move!"A gun barrel dug into Joel's forehead, and he finally calmed down. He snapped out of the haze of fury that had gripped him. When he saw Queenie lying in a pool of blood, the realization of what he'd just done hit him. He'd pulled the trigger and killed her."How did this happen? I didn't mean to." He shook his head over and over, tears running down his face. "Let me go, please. I swear I didn't mean to do it!""Take him away." The police dragged him away.An ambulance screamed up a moment later. If Queenie hadn't cheated and gotten tangled up with Joel, things never would've turned out like this. Now, Evan had already bowed out and walked away, yet she'd dragged him back into danger. She was even saying stuff like she'd rather die than let him die.He didn't know how to feel about that. His emotions were in such a mess that he couldn't get a single word out.Joel, on the other hand, was set off by what Queenie had just said. He deftly flicked the safety, then aimed at her right leg and pulled the trigger without hesitation. The bullet pierced her calf. She screamed as searing pain knifed through her. Her leg gave out, and she collapsed into a half-kneel on the floor."Queenie!" Evan panicked. "Are you okay?""I'm fine. Don't be scared," she said. She hadn't expected Joel to actually shoot. She stared at him and demanded, "Do you even realize what you're doing? I already called the cops. If you don't want them to haul you off, you still have time to walk away now."Cons

Evan hadn't expected Queenie to be so persistent. She just wouldn't give up. The calm he had just managed to regain instantly curdled into something foul."All your coworkers have gone home for dinner. Why haven't you? Your stomach's always been bad. If you don't eat, it's gonna start hurting again," she said."Queenie." Evan shook his head, baffled. "What do you actually want from me? Can't you just leave me alone? I'm begging you, okay?""I'm just worried about you. I wanna make it up to you in my own way." Queenie dropped her gaze, her tone unusually humble. "I know I've done so many things wrong, but I really don't wanna give up on you just like that. I love you. You're the love of my life. It was true in the past, and it will stay true in the future.""Love?" Evan let out a bitter laugh. "Your so-called love isn't something I can bear. I just wanna live my own life, Queenie. Please stop showing up and messing with it. You say you love me, right? Well, I don't love you anymore.

"Joel," Colin said."Colin?" Joel's smile turned disdainful when he saw Colin. "You can afford to drink here?""Are you okay?" There was something off about him, and Colin couldn't help asking."I'm fine. Why would anything be wrong with me?"Joel turned to leave. After a few steps, he suddenly looked back and said to Colin, "Oh, right. Do me a favor and warn your buddy that I'm not letting him off the hook. He can run to the ends of the earth, but I'll still find him."With that, he walked away, cold and resolute.Colin felt his hair stand on end as he watched Joel stalk off. He thought that Joel seemed like a totally different person, and a scary one at that.People always said love could turn into hate. It sure seemed true now.Without hesitating, he pulled out his phone and called Queenie. It was daytime where she was, so she picked up right away."Colin?""Queenie, listen up. I wasn't going to call you at all, but I can't reach Evan.""What's going on? Spit it out.""I

The woman said, "Hey there, handsome. You alone? Want me to keep you company for a few drinks?""Get lost," Joel said impatiently. "Do you know who I am? You've got some nerve, getting in my way!""Heh. I'm sure everyone in this bar knows who you are." The woman laughed. "You're Joel Lodge, the Lodge family's heir… though you look more like a defeated stray than anything now."I heard that after Queenie dumped you, she terminated all business deals with the Lodge family. Your mom kicked you out and even wants to disown you. Honestly, what was all of this for?"She reached out and gripped Joel's chin. "Queenie Stone might be blind, but I'm not. How about you get with me instead? I can help you with whatever you want, whether it's money or getting anything done."Joel sobered up slightly. He lifted his eyes and studied the woman before him. She was Yvonne Ward, the heiress of the Ward family, who also had some standing in Jerviston. His parents had kicked him out, so he had nowhere

"You're wrong. I've been doing just fine." Evan let out a cold laugh. "But whether I'm doing fine or not has nothing to do with you."He stepped into the nursing home. The moment Arthur saw him, he ran over like an excited child. "Evan! It's my son. He's here!""Yes, Dad. Tomorrow's the weekend. I came to take you home," Evan said. The weather in Svitzana had turned chilly, so he wrapped a scarf around Arthur's neck and held his hand as they headed toward home. They'd barely walked a few steps when Arthur suddenly grew agitated. "It's her! She's the one who killed your mother! Evan, your mom is dead! Your mom was killed by her! Murderer! You murderer!"He grabbed a stone from the ground and hurled it hard toward where Queenie was standing. She didn't move. She stood there, back straight, and took the blow. The stone smashed into her forehead, making it swell instantly. The nursing home staff rushed over and grabbed Arthur by the arms. "The patient is having an episode. Quick, gi
