Chapter 5

Author: Tranquil Phoenix
The moment Arthur's panicked shouting came through the phone, Evan jolted upright in bed. "Dad? What blood donation? Who's forcing Mom to donate blood?"

"Queenie! I was worried about you two after you left yesterday, so I followed you. I called Queenie, and she told me to bring your mom to the hospital to find her. As soon as we got here, she started forcing your mom to donate blood for some man! I'm not saying I don't want your mom to help, but she's getting on in years. She can't do this!" Arthur cried.

Evan's heart clenched hard, and his mind went blank. Queenie was forcing his mother, Grace Bronson, to donate blood to Joel?

She was insane!

Grace was already 62—way past the age where anyone should be giving blood. On top of that, she wasn't the healthiest. The doctor had said that she absolutely couldn't donate blood.

Without a second's hesitation, Evan jumped in the car and tore off toward the hospital. He was still running a fever, but he couldn't care less. He sped like a madman, blew through three red lights, and reached the hospital in under ten minutes.

When he got there, Arthur was on his knees in the hallway, clutching Queenie's pant leg and pleading with her. "Queenie, for Evan's sake, don't force Grace to donate blood! She's old. Her body can't take it!"

"Mr. Sutherland, it's not like I want to force her. Blame Evan for this. He's the one who pushed Joel to jump and suffer major blood loss. I called Evan over and over, but he wouldn't pick up. I know Mrs. Sutherland has Joel's rare blood type. Don't worry—I won't take that much. Just 2 pints."

Arthur almost blacked out on the spot. "2 pints? She can't handle that!"

No matter how much he begged, Queenie wouldn't budge an inch.

Evan finally got it. All those calls last night weren't because Queenie and Colin had realized they were wrong and wanted to apologize. They hadn't been trying to patch things up. Instead, they'd wanted him to give Joel his blood.

"Dad, get up! Stop begging her!" Evan rushed forward and hauled Arthur up.

"Evan, beg her! Beg Queenie to stop!" Arthur sobbed, his eyes swollen from crying.

Evan's own eyes burned red as he stared at Queenie. "Where's my mom?"

Her gaze went ice-cold the moment she saw him. "She's inside, donating blood."

"Inside, huh?" Evan stalked to the door and pounded on it like a man possessed. "Open up! Open the door! My mom didn't agree to this! She's 62 years old. She can't donate blood, let alone 2 pints! This is attempted murder! Open the damn door!"

He hit the door with everything he had, fists slamming so hard that the frame rattled.

Colin couldn't take it anymore and hurried over to pull him back. "Evan, stop! Joel's in there getting emergency treatment. You're gonna distract the doctors! Do you want him to die in there?"

"So his life counts, but my mom's doesn't? Do you have any idea what 2 pints means for an old woman? My mom was always good to you, Colin. Have you forgotten all about that? And now you're taking some stranger's side over hers…" Evan's voice cracked, the rest of his words dying in his throat.

He went right back to slamming on the door. "Open up! Open the door, or I'm calling the cops! I'll make sure this hospital gets shut down!"

"That's enough!" Queenie strode over and grabbed his arm in a hard, punishing grip. "Are you done causing a scene? If it weren't for you, would Joel have jumped? If it weren't for you, he wouldn't even need a transfusion right now.

"Instead of trying to make things right, you're actually trying to stop your mom from saving him? You really are cold-blooded!"

Evan was already weak from his fever. Her sudden yank sent him stumbling back a few steps before he crashed to the floor.

Arthur saw him go down and snapped. He lunged at Queenie. "Don't you lay a hand on my son, Queenie! You came to my house swearing you'd treat him well for the rest of your life. It's barely been a few days since then! Why are you doing this? Who the hell is that man in there?"

"Dad, drop it." Evan gritted his teeth and pulled out his phone. "I'm calling the police. I'll make them pay for this!"

"Joel… Don't do this. Don't make it any worse." Queenie forced the words out, her voice shaking. "Please, let Evan go.""Even now, you're still defending him? Do you love him that much? Fine, then. I'll send him straight to hell. You can keep each other company on the way down." Joel snatched the gun off the floor and aimed it at Evan. That was when the cops burst in and tackled him to the floor. "Freeze! Drop it!""Let me go! Let me kill Evan!" Joel yelled."I said don't move!"A gun barrel dug into Joel's forehead, and he finally calmed down. He snapped out of the haze of fury that had gripped him. When he saw Queenie lying in a pool of blood, the realization of what he'd just done hit him. He'd pulled the trigger and killed her."How did this happen? I didn't mean to." He shook his head over and over, tears running down his face. "Let me go, please. I swear I didn't mean to do it!""Take him away." The police dragged him away.An ambulance screamed up a moment later. If Queenie hadn't cheated and gotten tangled up with Joel, things never would've turned out like this. Now, Evan had already bowed out and walked away, yet she'd dragged him back into danger. She was even saying stuff like she'd rather die than let him die.He didn't know how to feel about that. His emotions were in such a mess that he couldn't get a single word out.Joel, on the other hand, was set off by what Queenie had just said. He deftly flicked the safety, then aimed at her right leg and pulled the trigger without hesitation. The bullet pierced her calf. She screamed as searing pain knifed through her. Her leg gave out, and she collapsed into a half-kneel on the floor."Queenie!" Evan panicked. "Are you okay?""I'm fine. Don't be scared," she said. She hadn't expected Joel to actually shoot. She stared at him and demanded, "Do you even realize what you're doing? I already called the cops. If you don't want them to haul you off, you still have time to walk away now."Cons

Evan hadn't expected Queenie to be so persistent. She just wouldn't give up. The calm he had just managed to regain instantly curdled into something foul."All your coworkers have gone home for dinner. Why haven't you? Your stomach's always been bad. If you don't eat, it's gonna start hurting again," she said."Queenie." Evan shook his head, baffled. "What do you actually want from me? Can't you just leave me alone? I'm begging you, okay?""I'm just worried about you. I wanna make it up to you in my own way." Queenie dropped her gaze, her tone unusually humble. "I know I've done so many things wrong, but I really don't wanna give up on you just like that. I love you. You're the love of my life. It was true in the past, and it will stay true in the future.""Love?" Evan let out a bitter laugh. "Your so-called love isn't something I can bear. I just wanna live my own life, Queenie. Please stop showing up and messing with it. You say you love me, right? Well, I don't love you anymore.

"Joel," Colin said."Colin?" Joel's smile turned disdainful when he saw Colin. "You can afford to drink here?""Are you okay?" There was something off about him, and Colin couldn't help asking."I'm fine. Why would anything be wrong with me?"Joel turned to leave. After a few steps, he suddenly looked back and said to Colin, "Oh, right. Do me a favor and warn your buddy that I'm not letting him off the hook. He can run to the ends of the earth, but I'll still find him."With that, he walked away, cold and resolute.Colin felt his hair stand on end as he watched Joel stalk off. He thought that Joel seemed like a totally different person, and a scary one at that.People always said love could turn into hate. It sure seemed true now.Without hesitating, he pulled out his phone and called Queenie. It was daytime where she was, so she picked up right away."Colin?""Queenie, listen up. I wasn't going to call you at all, but I can't reach Evan.""What's going on? Spit it out.""I

The woman said, "Hey there, handsome. You alone? Want me to keep you company for a few drinks?""Get lost," Joel said impatiently. "Do you know who I am? You've got some nerve, getting in my way!""Heh. I'm sure everyone in this bar knows who you are." The woman laughed. "You're Joel Lodge, the Lodge family's heir… though you look more like a defeated stray than anything now."I heard that after Queenie dumped you, she terminated all business deals with the Lodge family. Your mom kicked you out and even wants to disown you. Honestly, what was all of this for?"She reached out and gripped Joel's chin. "Queenie Stone might be blind, but I'm not. How about you get with me instead? I can help you with whatever you want, whether it's money or getting anything done."Joel sobered up slightly. He lifted his eyes and studied the woman before him. She was Yvonne Ward, the heiress of the Ward family, who also had some standing in Jerviston. His parents had kicked him out, so he had nowhere

"You're wrong. I've been doing just fine." Evan let out a cold laugh. "But whether I'm doing fine or not has nothing to do with you."He stepped into the nursing home. The moment Arthur saw him, he ran over like an excited child. "Evan! It's my son. He's here!""Yes, Dad. Tomorrow's the weekend. I came to take you home," Evan said. The weather in Svitzana had turned chilly, so he wrapped a scarf around Arthur's neck and held his hand as they headed toward home. They'd barely walked a few steps when Arthur suddenly grew agitated. "It's her! She's the one who killed your mother! Evan, your mom is dead! Your mom was killed by her! Murderer! You murderer!"He grabbed a stone from the ground and hurled it hard toward where Queenie was standing. She didn't move. She stood there, back straight, and took the blow. The stone smashed into her forehead, making it swell instantly. The nursing home staff rushed over and grabbed Arthur by the arms. "The patient is having an episode. Quick, gi
