Chapter 6

Author: Tranquil Phoenix
The moment Evan pulled out his phone, Queenie snatched it and hurled it to the floor. It broke with a loud crack, and the screen went dark.

Evan froze. That had been a gift from Queenie on their third anniversary. On the back, she'd even personally engraved the words, "Queenie Stone loves Evan Sutherland."

And now, she'd smashed it with her own hands.

"Cooled off yet?" Seeing him go completely still, Queenie calmed down as well. "I know Mrs. Sutherland's too old to donate blood, but I had no choice if I wanted to save Joel's life. Once he pulls through, I'll make it up to her, no matter the cost. And I'll buy you a new phone. You've been eyeing the latest model, right? I'll get it for you."

Evan slowly lifted his eyes to her, hatred burning in them. "Queenie Stone, I hate you."

The look in his eyes made her jolt. She started to say something when the operating room doors swung open.

The doctor walked out. "The patient has lost too much blood. 2 pints still isn't enough!"

Queenie frowned. "Then what are you waiting for? Keep drawing!"

"But Mrs. Sutherland is elderly. If we keep taking her blood, I'm afraid—"

"I'll only say this once more. Keep drawing. I'm not letting Joel die!" Queenie had lost her mind over Joel.

Evan dragged himself across the floor and weakly grabbed her pant leg. "Take mine. Don't take my mom's blood. Take mine…"

She looked down and saw tears spilling from the corners of his eyes. Her heart wavered, but she still bent down, lifted his chin, and said softly, "Good. See? You should've done this earlier. You screwed up, Evan. You should be doing everything you can to make it right, shouldn't you?"

He nodded. "Yeah. I'm begging you, let my mom out. Let her rest. Take my blood. As much as you want."

"How could I bear to take that much?" She pulled him up and gently wiped the tears from the corners of his eyes. "Relax. It'll just be a little."

She turned to the doctor. "Take him inside. As for the woman inside, move her to a VIP ward so she can rest. Do everything you can to get her back on her feet as soon as possible. She can't suffer any lasting damage from this. She's my future mother-in-law. Got it?"

"Yes, Ms. Stone."

Future mother-in-law?

Evan almost laughed at those words. Queenie would never be his wife. Not in this lifetime.

He was shoved into the blood donation room, and the nurse started drawing his blood. As he watched the blood flow out of him bit by bit, he closed his eyes.

They could take as much as they wanted. In just one more day, he and his parents would leave this place for good.

…

When Evan woke up, he was already lying in a hospital ward.

Arthur sat beside him, sobbing. "That damned woman drew so much blood from my boy. Look at how pale he is now! And my wife's still unconscious. We don't even know when she'll wake up. What did we ever do to deserve running into a monster like her?"

Seeing Arthur bawl his eyes out like that made Evan feel like his heart was being sliced open.

He glanced at Grace in the next bed. Her complexion looked even worse than before. She still hadn't woken up. Had something gone wrong?

"Dad—" He opened his mouth to call out to Arthur when the monitor at Grace's bedside suddenly blared.

Evan panicked and immediately slammed his hand on the call button.

Arthur hurried over to check on Grace. "What's happening? Why are the machines going off like crazy all of a sudden?"

Evan could only try to calm him down. "Dad, calm down. Don't worry. It's gonna be okay."

"Quick! Get in here!"

"This is Ms. Stone's mother-in-law! Move it, people!"

"Dr. Walker, the patient lost too much blood in one go. Her heart and kidneys are completely shot. I'm afraid—"

"Afraid of what?" Arthur shook his head wildly and grabbed the doctor's hand. "Afraid of what? Answer me! What's wrong with my wife? What happened to her?"

As soon as the words left his mouth, the heart monitor flatlined.

Evan stared at Grace. Just a couple of days ago, she'd been eating with him and talking about how he had to live a good life with Queenie. Now, she'd slipped away right in front of him. His eyes slowly turned bloodshot.

"I'm sorry. We did everything we could. Please accept our condolences."

"Joel… Don't do this. Don't make it any worse." Queenie forced the words out, her voice shaking. "Please, let Evan go.""Even now, you're still defending him? Do you love him that much? Fine, then. I'll send him straight to hell. You can keep each other company on the way down." Joel snatched the gun off the floor and aimed it at Evan. That was when the cops burst in and tackled him to the floor. "Freeze! Drop it!""Let me go! Let me kill Evan!" Joel yelled."I said don't move!"A gun barrel dug into Joel's forehead, and he finally calmed down. He snapped out of the haze of fury that had gripped him. When he saw Queenie lying in a pool of blood, the realization of what he'd just done hit him. He'd pulled the trigger and killed her."How did this happen? I didn't mean to." He shook his head over and over, tears running down his face. "Let me go, please. I swear I didn't mean to do it!""Take him away." The police dragged him away.An ambulance screamed up a moment later. If Queenie hadn't cheated and gotten tangled up with Joel, things never would've turned out like this. Now, Evan had already bowed out and walked away, yet she'd dragged him back into danger. She was even saying stuff like she'd rather die than let him die.He didn't know how to feel about that. His emotions were in such a mess that he couldn't get a single word out.Joel, on the other hand, was set off by what Queenie had just said. He deftly flicked the safety, then aimed at her right leg and pulled the trigger without hesitation. The bullet pierced her calf. She screamed as searing pain knifed through her. Her leg gave out, and she collapsed into a half-kneel on the floor."Queenie!" Evan panicked. "Are you okay?""I'm fine. Don't be scared," she said. She hadn't expected Joel to actually shoot. She stared at him and demanded, "Do you even realize what you're doing? I already called the cops. If you don't want them to haul you off, you still have time to walk away now."Cons

Evan hadn't expected Queenie to be so persistent. She just wouldn't give up. The calm he had just managed to regain instantly curdled into something foul."All your coworkers have gone home for dinner. Why haven't you? Your stomach's always been bad. If you don't eat, it's gonna start hurting again," she said."Queenie." Evan shook his head, baffled. "What do you actually want from me? Can't you just leave me alone? I'm begging you, okay?""I'm just worried about you. I wanna make it up to you in my own way." Queenie dropped her gaze, her tone unusually humble. "I know I've done so many things wrong, but I really don't wanna give up on you just like that. I love you. You're the love of my life. It was true in the past, and it will stay true in the future.""Love?" Evan let out a bitter laugh. "Your so-called love isn't something I can bear. I just wanna live my own life, Queenie. Please stop showing up and messing with it. You say you love me, right? Well, I don't love you anymore.

"Joel," Colin said."Colin?" Joel's smile turned disdainful when he saw Colin. "You can afford to drink here?""Are you okay?" There was something off about him, and Colin couldn't help asking."I'm fine. Why would anything be wrong with me?"Joel turned to leave. After a few steps, he suddenly looked back and said to Colin, "Oh, right. Do me a favor and warn your buddy that I'm not letting him off the hook. He can run to the ends of the earth, but I'll still find him."With that, he walked away, cold and resolute.Colin felt his hair stand on end as he watched Joel stalk off. He thought that Joel seemed like a totally different person, and a scary one at that.People always said love could turn into hate. It sure seemed true now.Without hesitating, he pulled out his phone and called Queenie. It was daytime where she was, so she picked up right away."Colin?""Queenie, listen up. I wasn't going to call you at all, but I can't reach Evan.""What's going on? Spit it out.""I

The woman said, "Hey there, handsome. You alone? Want me to keep you company for a few drinks?""Get lost," Joel said impatiently. "Do you know who I am? You've got some nerve, getting in my way!""Heh. I'm sure everyone in this bar knows who you are." The woman laughed. "You're Joel Lodge, the Lodge family's heir… though you look more like a defeated stray than anything now."I heard that after Queenie dumped you, she terminated all business deals with the Lodge family. Your mom kicked you out and even wants to disown you. Honestly, what was all of this for?"She reached out and gripped Joel's chin. "Queenie Stone might be blind, but I'm not. How about you get with me instead? I can help you with whatever you want, whether it's money or getting anything done."Joel sobered up slightly. He lifted his eyes and studied the woman before him. She was Yvonne Ward, the heiress of the Ward family, who also had some standing in Jerviston. His parents had kicked him out, so he had nowhere

"You're wrong. I've been doing just fine." Evan let out a cold laugh. "But whether I'm doing fine or not has nothing to do with you."He stepped into the nursing home. The moment Arthur saw him, he ran over like an excited child. "Evan! It's my son. He's here!""Yes, Dad. Tomorrow's the weekend. I came to take you home," Evan said. The weather in Svitzana had turned chilly, so he wrapped a scarf around Arthur's neck and held his hand as they headed toward home. They'd barely walked a few steps when Arthur suddenly grew agitated. "It's her! She's the one who killed your mother! Evan, your mom is dead! Your mom was killed by her! Murderer! You murderer!"He grabbed a stone from the ground and hurled it hard toward where Queenie was standing. She didn't move. She stood there, back straight, and took the blow. The stone smashed into her forehead, making it swell instantly. The nursing home staff rushed over and grabbed Arthur by the arms. "The patient is having an episode. Quick, gi
