Chapter 4

Author: Adam
Theo never caught sight of me again before the party ended.

The image from the ballroom refused to leave him. I had stood there bowing numbly, my body covered in bruises, yet I hadn't shed a single tear.

The frustration he'd been carrying for days slowly melted away, replaced by a dull ache he refused to admit was guilt.

He brushed off Eve's attempts to keep him there, dismissed his bodyguards, and came to find me alone.

The attic door creaked open, breaking the silence.

I sat before the vanity, my black velvet gown slipping off my shoulders. Red welts from the chains wrapped around my arms, and a dark bruise spread across my chest, all painfully exposed beneath the cold light.

I didn't turn around. I remained perfectly still, as though the person behind me were no more important than another servant passing through.

Theo froze in the doorway. His voice softened in a way I hadn't heard in a long time. "Those wounds look serious. I'll have the butler bring up some cream."

Since Eve had moved into the estate a year ago, it was the first time he'd spoken to me without an accusation or reprimand.

He came closer. "Eve is alone in the world. To me, she's a helpless younger sister. Bella, you're my wife. I don't want the two of you to keep misunderstanding each other. You have to stop targeting her."

I spoke, measured and deliberate. "This is the last time I'm saying this. I have never targeted her."

The coldness in my voice seemed to strike a nerve. His temper flared again.

"When are you going to own your mistakes, Bella?

"While I was away, you slapped her, threw her jewelry and clothes in the trash, had her held down in cold water for an entire night, and sent people to assassinate her. If I hadn't found out in time, you would have tortured her to death!

"Bella, you used to be so smart and sensible. How did you become this cruel?

"Or was this who you were all along, and you were just hiding your true nature?"

I gave a humorless laugh and forced myself to stand. "She said I slapped her, but I was in the garden the entire time. I never so much as touched the hem of her dress.

"She said I stole her jewelry? I've never even set foot inside her room.

"She said I held her in cold water? I was burning with a high fever that day. I never left my bedroom."

"You believed every word she cried to you. You never checked whether the security footage had been tampered with. You never once asked for my side. Instead, you sent men to block my car on a mountain road, locked me inside an abandoned freezer, tore my clothes off, and threw me into the basement as if I didn't matter.

"While I was curled up in a pool of my blood, you were flying her to a private island for a night of flowers and romance on the beach.

"While I burned with fever in the hospital and doctors warned I might not survive the night, you commissioned a $1.4 million custom necklace for her.

"While I went days without a drop of water in that basement, you were hosting a lavish birthday party for her with all of New York's elite.

"Theo... do you even remember what day it is today?"

Theo stood rooted to the spot, confusion flashing across his face. "What are you talking about? When did I ever..."

Before he could finish, Eve's tearful voice echoed up from downstairs. "Theo! Where are you? My ankle's hurting again! There isn't a single maid in my room. I'm all alone... I'm scared..."

Theo's hand hung in the air for a brief moment before dropping back to his side. His voice turned hurried and dismissive. "You're weak. The fever's making you delirious. Put some medicine on those wounds. Eve can't be alone. She needs someone with her. I'll go check on her first, then I'll come back."

Before the last word had even left his mouth, he was already hurrying down the stairs.

A second later, the heavy attic door slammed shut. The little warmth that remained in the attic disappeared with it.

Eve didn't survive the basement for long. The woman who had once turned heads wherever she went slowly lost her mind under the endless torment. In the end, she bit through her own tongue to end it.When Theo heard, he merely gave a dismissive wave. "Burn it. Clean the place out."He grew more violent by the day. And somehow, more fragile. He covered the walls with carved numbers.Starting at 1,826, he counted down one day at a time... Then I started counting back up again. As though he were waiting for a day that would never return. Then one night, a violent storm rolled in. Thunder shook the estate.Blind drunk, Theo stumbled toward the basement entrance—long ago sealed beneath solid concrete—and clawed at it with his bare hands. "Bella! Bella! I was wrong! "I'm letting you out now!"Rain mixed with blood as his fingers split open against the concrete, streaking the steps crimson. But he had ordered that door welded shut himself. No key in the world could open it again.Thousands of m

After dealing with Eve, Theo was left wandering through the empty estate. He felt lost.He mobilized every resource at his disposal to find me, but the answer was always the same: no trace. It was as if I had vanished from the face of the earth. There were no flight records, no purchases, no surveillance footage. Nothing. My complete disappearance broke him far more than any accusation ever could. He returned to the attic and replayed the video again and again. He watched it frame by frame, searching for the smallest clue.He remembered all the nights I stayed awake until dawn helping him finish paperwork. He remembered me calling his name while burning with fever. He remembered the brief flash of hurt in my eyes every time he wrongly accused me.And what had he given me in return? A whip across my back and imprisonment in a freezing basement cell.Every replay made the guilt cut a little deeper. Then, at the very end of the video, he noticed something.Behind Eve hung a landscape pain

Theo rose without a word. He didn't call for his bodyguards. Alone, he walked toward Eve's bedroom, one slow step at a time. The bedroom door exploded inward beneath a single kick, the crash shattering the stillness of dawn.Eve was still asleep. She rolled over lazily. The moment her eyes opened and landed on Theo—covered in blood, his eyes burning with a murderous red—the sleep vanished from her face, replaced by sheer terror."Theo? What happ—" She instinctively started putting on her usual helpless expression."The weapons network. The Swiss bankcode." Theo cut her off. His voice was so hoarse it sounded as though he had crawled out of hell. "And you would make me kill Bella with my own hands?"Eve's pupils shrank. Her face was pale. She jerked upright, ready to defend herself, but then she noticed the tablet in Theo's hand. The screen was lit, replaying her own confession—every vicious word impossible to deny."No! That's not real!" Eve shrieked, scrambling backward like a cornere

The plane broke through the clouds, and the lights of New York faded into specks below.I leaned against the window, a glass of water in my hands. My mind was blank. There was no hatred. No love. Only a bone-deep exhaustion that left me feeling hollow.George Bennett, my father's former bodyguard, spoke softly. "Ms. Bella, you should try to get some sleep. We've got a long flight ahead."I shook my head.He sighed heavily. "The late Don worried about you more than anyone before he passed. In the end... Theo failed you."We've gathered all the evidence. Why not expose Eve yourself?""Soon."I closed my eyes, hiding the last trace of light in them. The truth would come out eventually. Soon enough, Theo would learn just how badly he'd been fooled.Three days later, Theo received no news of me. What arrived instead was my parting gift.A flash drive, containing every piece of evidence I had gathered before I left.Theo plugged it into his computer. The screen flickered to life. The first v

It felt as though an invisible hand had wrapped around Theo's heart and squeezed until he doubled over in pain. The faint scent of medicine still lingered in the room. But Bella was gone.Only the gifts he had given me remained, laid out one by one like a silent record of how his devotion had decayed over five years. At first, each gift had been carefully chosen and engraved by his own hand. The later ones had become little more than thoughtless obligations. The quietest accusation cuts the deepest.Only now did Theo realize I had been planning to leave him for a long time. This wasn't an impulsive decision. It was a goodbye I'd prepared long before tonight. He had always assumed I would wait for him forever. No matter how badly he hurt me, I would endure it like she always had, quietly nursing my wounds until he finally remembered to look her way.But I was gone.Without so much as an explanation, I had vanished from his world."Bella." At the same time, in the primary bedroom, an uneasy feeling settled in Theo's chest.Ever since he'd left the attic, a strange restlessness had refused to leave him.My eyes kept flashing through his mind. Calm. Empty. They haunted him more than any screaming match or tearful breakdown ever had.Eve's silk nightgown slipped off one shoulder. She leaned toward Theo, but he pushed her away, his expression cold."Theo, what's wrong?"Do you even remember what today is? My words echoed through his mind again. What day?He frowned, searching his memory, but came up empty.Maybe it's some insignificant anniversary.Bella always got upset over little things like this. But somehow... Tonight felt different. The thought had barely formed before Theo was on his feet, moving on pure instinct. "I'm going to check on Bella."Eve's smile froze, but only for a split second before she quickly replaced it with her usual worried expression.
