Chapter 5

Author: Adam
A year ago, Eve's family had gone bankrupt, and she came to Theo, asking for shelter.

At first, he still cared enough about our marriage to reassure me. He said he was only helping an old friend through a difficult time and asked me to be patient with her.

But Eve knew exactly how to manipulate him. Every loving moment we shared, she found a way to interrupt.

Whenever Theo and I were alone, Eve would burst in right on cue, clutching her chest, crying that her heart was racing and she couldn't breathe.

Day after day, she painted me as a powerful, cold-hearted woman with a possessive streak, someone who couldn't bear to see another woman anywhere near him.

Little by little, her endless schemes wore away every bit of the trust and loyalty he once had for me.

Now, all it took was one tearful cry for help. The tiny spark of guilt he'd finally begun to feel vanished in an instant as he rushed to another woman's side without a second thought.

His gentle voice drifted upstairs from the hallway below as he comforted her.

I slowly looked away from the door. My fingernails dug into my palm until they hurt, but the sting was nothing compared to the numb ache in my heart.

I reached for the hidden compartment inside the vanity and pulled it open. A thick stack of documents lay neatly across the surface.

This was the only way out my father had left me. My last piece of dignity.

A divorce paper ending our marriage. An overseas permanent residency permit. Notarized documents transferring all of my assets offshore. Legal papers severing every remaining connection between Theo's organization and me.

A private jet waited outside the city with its tanks already full. My belongings had been quietly shipped to my apartment overseas in small batches, leaving nothing behind to trace.

Today was the 1,826th day of our secret marriage. The day our five-year agreement expired.

For countless nights, I had clung to hope.

I hoped he would finally see through Eve's lies. I hoped he would stop blindly taking her side. I hoped he would look at the scars covering my body—old wounds layered over new ones—and finally see what had become of me.

But tonight, the last trace of that hope died.

All 1,826 days of love, endurance, resentment, and longing died in that moment, leaving nothing behind.

Outside, the night was black and heavy. Faint laughter still drifted from Eve's bedroom.

I picked up the fountain pen and signed my name on the paper. Not a moment of hesitation.

Then I slipped on a light coat, hiding the bruises and scars that crisscrossed my body, and walked toward the concealed door at the back of the attic.

The driver was already waiting on the narrow road beneath the trees, just as we'd arranged.

The black blended perfectly into the darkness, invisible to everyone inside the estate.

He had served my father for most of his life. He was one of the very few people on the estate who would dare disobey Theo.

As I opened the car door, I turned back for one last look at the estate that had imprisoned me for five years.

Once, it had been the place where I'd known the greatest happiness of my life. It had also become the place of broken bones, humiliation, darkness, and endless despair.

The engine hummed to life, and the car rolled quietly away from the estate.

In the rearview mirror, the estate's lights shrank to pinpoints until they vanished into the endless night.

I leaned my head against the window and slowly closed my eyes.

From this day forward, there would be no more Bella Moreau, living in New York under the shadow of a mafia boss, enduring everything just to survive.

I was leaving for another country. An ocean would stand between us. And for the rest of our lives, we would never meet again.

And somehow, more fragile. He covered the walls with carved numbers.Starting at 1,826, he counted down one day at a time... Then I started counting back up again. As though he were waiting for a day that would never return. Then one night, a violent storm rolled in. Thunder shook the estate.Blind drunk, Theo stumbled toward the basement entrance—long ago sealed beneath solid concrete—and clawed at it with his bare hands. "Bella! Bella! I was wrong! "I'm letting you out now!"Rain mixed with blood as his fingers split open against the concrete, streaking the steps crimson. But he had ordered that door welded shut himself. No key in the world could open it again.Thousands of m

After dealing with Eve, Theo was left wandering through the empty estate. He felt lost.He mobilized every resource at his disposal to find me, but the answer was always the same: no trace. It was as if I had vanished from the face of the earth. There were no flight records, no purchases, no surveillance footage. Nothing. My complete disappearance broke him far more than any accusation ever could. He returned to the attic and replayed the video again and again. He watched it frame by frame, searching for the smallest clue.He remembered all the nights I stayed awake until dawn helping him finish paperwork. He remembered me calling his name while burning with fever. He remembered the brief flash of hurt in my eyes every time he wrongly accused me.And what had he given me in return? A whip across my back and imprisonment in a freezing basement cell.Every replay made the guilt cut a little deeper. Then, at the very end of the video, he noticed something.Behind Eve hung a landscape pain

Theo rose without a word. He didn't call for his bodyguards. Alone, he walked toward Eve's bedroom, one slow step at a time. The bedroom door exploded inward beneath a single kick, the crash shattering the stillness of dawn.Eve was still asleep. She rolled over lazily. The moment her eyes opened and landed on Theo—covered in blood, his eyes burning with a murderous red—the sleep vanished from her face, replaced by sheer terror."Theo? What happ—" She instinctively started putting on her usual helpless expression."The weapons network. The Swiss bankcode." Theo cut her off. His voice was so hoarse it sounded as though he had crawled out of hell. "And you would make me kill Bella with my own hands?"Eve's pupils shrank. Her face was pale. She jerked upright, ready to defend herself, but then she noticed the tablet in Theo's hand. The screen was lit, replaying her own confession—every vicious word impossible to deny."No! That's not real!" Eve shrieked, scrambling backward like a cornere

The plane broke through the clouds, and the lights of New York faded into specks below.I leaned against the window, a glass of water in my hands. My mind was blank. There was no hatred. No love. Only a bone-deep exhaustion that left me feeling hollow.George Bennett, my father's former bodyguard, spoke softly. "Ms. Bella, you should try to get some sleep. We've got a long flight ahead."I shook my head.He sighed heavily. "The late Don worried about you more than anyone before he passed. In the end... Theo failed you."We've gathered all the evidence. Why not expose Eve yourself?""Soon."I closed my eyes, hiding the last trace of light in them. The truth would come out eventually. It felt as though an invisible hand had wrapped around Theo's heart and squeezed until he doubled over in pain. The faint scent of medicine still lingered in the room. But Bella was gone.Only the gifts he had given me remained, laid out one by one like a silent record of how his devotion had decayed over five years. At first, each gift had been carefully chosen and engraved by his own hand. The later ones had become little more than thoughtless obligations. The quietest accusation cuts the deepest.Only now did Theo realize I had been planning to leave him for a long time. This wasn't an impulsive decision. It was a goodbye I'd prepared long before tonight. He had always assumed I would wait for him forever. No matter how badly he hurt me, I would endure it like she always had, quietly nursing my wounds until he finally remembered to look her way.But I was gone.Without so much as an explanation, I had vanished from his world."Bella." At the same time, in the primary bedroom, an uneasy feeling settled in Theo's chest.Ever since he'd left the attic, a strange restlessness had refused to leave him.My eyes kept flashing through his mind. Calm. Empty. They haunted him more than any screaming match or tearful breakdown ever had.Eve's silk nightgown slipped off one shoulder. She leaned toward Theo, but he pushed her away, his expression cold."Theo, what's wrong?"Do you even remember what today is? My words echoed through his mind again. What day?He frowned, searching his memory, but came up empty.Maybe it's some insignificant anniversary.Bella always got upset over little things like this. But somehow... Tonight felt different. The thought had barely formed before Theo was on his feet, moving on pure instinct.
