Chapter 1

I died in what they called a detention room, though it was really just a damp and freezing cold cellar that had been abandoned for years.

Even right before I passed away, I was still holding out hope that Mom would come and let me out.

Maybe my obsession was just too strong, because after I passed, my soul drifted right over to Mom’s side.

I watched as Mom took my younger brother, Zack, to an amusement park, letting him run wild and have the time of his life. Mom held Zack in her arms on the carousel, laughing without a care in the world.

The bright, glittering lights on the carousel stung so badly that I could barely keep my eyes open.

Zack held an ice cream cone that had already melted into liquid and casually tossed it aside. Meanwhile, I had never even tasted ice cream in my entire life, simply because Mom always said money was tight and snacks like that were a waste of cash.

Yet, when Zack wasted it, it was just considered a rare moment of him enjoying himself.

This was my very first time visiting an amusement park. Even though I was only a ghost, I was still so happy. I was finally able to sit right beside Mom, riding the carousel, the bumper cars, and the roller coasters together.

Zack’s laughter and screams echoed in my ears, and Mom looked at him with nothing but doting love. But then, as she turned her head, her gaze locked right with mine.

My breath hitched. For a second, I actually thought Mom could see me. I even greedily thought that if this was the very first time Mom ever smiled at me like that, I could die content.

It wasn't until the park was closing for the night that Mom finally led Zack away.

Halfway home, Zack put on a pitiful act.

"Mom, Cody is still at home. Are we really just going to leave him be? I mean, he didn't mean to give me a fever on purpose. Cody was probably... probably just desperate for your attention."

Hearing my name suddenly brought up made my heart skip a beat. However, thinking about it now, I couldn't help but laugh at myself. How could a soul like me have a heartbeat?

Even so, I still found myself anticipating Mom's answer.

That's right—I had already been dead for three days. Had Mom even thought of me once during all this time?

However, the very next words out of Mom's mouth felt like a bucket of ice water dumped straight over my head.

"He's already so old, yet he still acts like a kid, throwing a tantrum over jealousy! If it wasn't for him, would you have ended up in the hospital? You suffered so much, and here you are, still speaking up for that brat!

"Zack, you're way too sweet. What are you going to do if people walk all over you in the future?"

I froze, completely numb all over.

That day, Mom and Dad had gone out to pick out a gift for Zack, leaving the two of us alone at home. Zack kept throwing a fit, begging for handmade pasta, insisting he wouldn't touch the store-bought stuff from down the street. So, I had no choice but to roll out the dough and make it from scratch for him.

Right after the pot started boiling, the combination of steam and the indoor heating made the temperature inside spike instantly. Zack, while playing video games, barked orders at me to open the window, shouting that it was way too hot.

I tried to reason with him calmly, telling him it was below freezing outside. Since he was wearing thin clothes and his health wasn't great to begin with, he'd catch a cold easily.

Who would have guessed that Zack would just slam his keyboard down and scream at me?

"Cody, don't you forget who runs this house! You do whatever I tell you to do! You were born to be my slave!"

I stood there in complete shock.

Even when I was really little, Mom and Dad always drummed it into me that since Zack was younger, I needed to give in to him and take care of him in every possible way. But I had never once imagined that I was actually Zack's slave, even though I had spent all these years doing slave work.

Yet, hearing those words coming straight from Zack's mouth still made my heart go cold. In the end, I didn't even have the energy left to talk back.

It was true that Zack knew how to throw fits, make a scene, and play the victim. Every time, Mom and Dad would blindly take Zack's side without ever asking questions.

So I had no choice but to obey Zack and open the window, all while trying to keep an eye on the boiling pot in the kitchen, accidentally scalding a massive blister on my hand in the process.

  • Dead By Day Three   Chapter 10

I was zipped into a body bag and lifted into the back of the van.Mom tried to follow, but the police officers gently held her back. She ran after the van for a few frantic steps, crying out my name, before collapsing onto her knees in the freezing snow.My soul didn't follow my body to the coroner's office, nor did I stay in that house that had suffocated me for sixteen years. Instead, I drifted higher and higher, watching the city lights blur into a soft halo beneath me.Fragments of my past flashed before my eyes: Mom's fleeting, tender smiles; Dad's hand resting briefly on my shoulder; Zack, when he was younger, tugging at the edge of my shirt for attention. Those faint, fragile moments of warmth, almost buried by years of cold neglect, flickered like tiny sparks in the pitch-black night—weak, but real.Maybe they weren't born monsters but had simply lost their fairness and conscience as parents, slowly eroded day after day by favoritism and indulgence. And I became the tragic

In the past, Mom would have rushed over immediately to shield him, snapping at Dad for scaring the boy.But this time, Mom slowly raised her head and stared at him in a whole new light through red, swollen eyes‌.Gone was the usual fond indulgence in her gaze. All that remained was shock, disappointment, hurt, and a cold, piercing scrutiny."Zack..." Mom's voice came out almost in a whisper. "That day... did you really force Cody to open the window? Was it you who complained about the heat and demanded he open it, completely ignoring that it was way below freezing outside?""I... I..."Zack's eyes darted frantically as he scrambled to pull another lie together. But under Dad's furious glare and Mom's gaze, his words faltered. Ultimately, he hung his head in silence—an undeniable confession."Then why didn't you explain things to me?!"Mom's voice began to tremble."You knew that I misunderstood Cody, so why didn't you set the record straight?! You just stood right there and wat

"I... I..."Mom's lips trembled, but she couldn't squeeze out a single complete sentence. She stared down at my frozen, purplish-blue body tightly curled up on the floor, the first child she had carried for nine months.Maybe she suddenly remembered how wrinkly and red I looked the day I was born or recalled the soft tone of my voice the first time I ever babbled the word "Mom". Perhaps she remembered an even earlier time, before Zack was born, when she used to hold me in her arms, humming lullabies to put me to sleep. Those fleeting moments of gentleness she had intentionally buried and forgotten were now coming back to her. Guilt, remorse, shock, self-doubt—endless torrents of emotion suffocated her."Who are you putting on this act for now?"Dad's voice was cold, dripping with thick, heavy sarcasm."All these years, you've only ever had eyes for Zack. What was Cody to you? Honestly, it's better he's dead. At least he doesn't have to suffer through your abuse anymore!""Matth

Both Mom and I stared at Dad in absolute disbelief. This was the same man who usually kept his mouth shut, pretended everything was none of his business, and always shook his head, saying he knew nothing. The father who turned a blind eye whenever I was treated like dirt, never offering so much as a single word of comfort. Was he doing this now because he had finally found a chance to break free from Mom's oppressive control, or did he genuinely have a pang of conscience and remember I was his son?"What... what did you just say?"Mom's face paled, her voice trembling.Dad let out a cold, sharp sneer."Debbie, I remember Cody asked you to check the security camera footage right before you locked him up, but you refused. And when he bought you that skincare product, you swore it was a knockoff. Well, today, I'm going to make sure you get a crystal-clear picture of how the son you mistreated for over ten years actually treated you!"With that, Dad snatched the original store rece

"How could Cody be so reckless? Mom, you were only doing what was best for him. How could he be so weak-minded as to commit suicide, making you carry this guilt for the rest of your life!"Zack squeezed Mom's hand, feigning heartbreaking concern.Only this time, Mom didn't squeeze Zack's hand back like she usually did. Instead, she yanked her hand away, staring at him as if he were a stranger."Who said your brother committed suicide?""Besides suicide, how else could he have died? He must've felt like you favored me too much. Sigh, Cody was just way too foolish."Once again, he was throwing dirt on my name using the same playbook.Except Mom didn't fall for his twisted narrative. Her eyebrows knitted together in a tight scowl."He froze to death... Zack, how could you slander your brother like that?"A crack appeared on Zack's otherwise calm face. He immediately scrambled to change the subject to salvage his delicate persona before it completely crumbled."Mom, we need to hur

  • Dead By Day Three   Chapter 5

I thought Mom would go straight to sleep after washing her face, but to my surprise, she got into bed and pulled out her phone to call me.After the phone rang once, then again, with no answer, Mom let out a cold snort and muttered to herself."At least the brat knows his place. He wouldn't dare crawl out of that cellar without my permission."I let out a bitter laugh. Here I thought she had finally remembered me, but she was only calling to check if I had managed to escape on my own. She knew full well that I didn't have my phone with me when she shoved me down there.Though even if I had carried it with me, what difference would it have made?So Mom turned around and dialed Dad instead."Are you at home? Go let Cody out. While you're at it, ask him if he realizes what he did wrong. As long as he's willing to apologize to Zack the second we get back, he won't have to go back down into that cellar. Besides... he's been locked up for days. What if he dies out there?"Dad's impati
