I crumpled to the floor, feeling like all the strength had been sapped out of me.

John Foster frowned as he reminded me, "Cece, your foot is bleeding…"

Only then did I notice the bloody footprints across the floor.

In my rush to head out the door, I had knocked over a wine bottle, and the glass shards had pierced the soles of my feet. Yet I hadn't felt a thing, my mind consumed only by the exuberant joy of reuniting with my long-lost husband.

"The first-aid kit is in the drawer under the television. There's a bottle of iodine and some gauze inside. You're still as clumsy as you've ever been. Since I'm not around anymore, you have to learn how to take care of yourself!"

John spoke with the same gentle tone as he used to.

Even as a child, I'd always been careless. I was used to finding new scraps and bruises on my body every day.

But after I met John, even the slightest bruise would make his heart ache. "Your body doesn't belong to just you anymore. It's mine, too, and I won't let you hurt it anymore!"

The loving words he once said to me still echoed in my ears.

Suddenly, I pressed down hard, forcing the glass shards deeper into my flesh like a woman who'd lost her mind.

This had to be a dream. Or maybe I was drunk.

Why else would John suddenly tell me that he didn't love me? That everyone was just lying to me this whole time?

"Cecilia! Cecilia Jamison!"

Startled to see my sudden meltdown, John began shouting in agitation.

"No matter how much you hurt yourself, you can't change anything! If you don't believe me, check the loose floorboard under the money tree in the living room. You'll understand then."

I froze and stiffly turned my head toward the money tree that was right in front of me. But I didn't dare to check.

John grew impatient and started urging me.

I hobbled over to the plant and pushed the pot aside, lifting the loose floorboard.

An album was hidden beneath it, and all the photos were of John and… my best friend, Adaline Seymour.

It turned out that they were childhood sweethearts.

The album was a record of every beautiful moment they had shared with each other. As children, they played in the mud together. As teenagers, they won a duet piano competition.

They went on to see the romantic northern lights together and took hot air balloon rides abroad. Throughout every season and across every corner of the world, there were traces of them walking side by side.

The look in their eyes as they stared at each other had gone from innocent friendship to something deeper, a lingering desire.

The final photo was of Adaline's sleeping visage, her features still youthful. Three words were written on the back.

"Wait for me."

All at once, my stubborn disbelief burst. The pain coming from my feet shot straight to my heart, making my tears stream down.

I looked at my bloodied hands and recalled the way they'd once held a bloodied John in them. I could still remember how he looked, all covered in blood two years ago.

It'd happened on my birthday. I cajoled John into taking me to an island to go diving. But on the way, we were caught in a severe car accident.

He'd shielded me protectively with his body. He wanted to wipe the tears from my face, but didn't want to smear his blood on me.

"Don't cry. How can I bear to leave you?"

But as it turned out, everything had been a lie.

I felt a lump in my throat, making me choke. My voice was hoarse as I asked, "Why? Why did you marry me…"

After seeing those photos in the album, I knew he'd fallen in love with Adaline even before he met me.

John sighed. "Adaline wanted me to marry you."

That single sentence crushed my heart into pieces, filling me with a chilling, agonizing sensation.

"Adaline noticed my feelings for her, but she chose to avoid them, so she introduced you to me. She later asked me to marry you. I did everything she asked of me. It couldn't be helped. After all, I've always been…"

His voice was exasperated, yet laced with the sweetest tenderness.

This was how I found out that all the care and affection he showed me was only because he wanted to fulfill the request of the woman he truly loved.

I was just a pathetic clown forced to be a part of their twisted relationship.

My lips twitched as I forced out a bitter chuckle. "Tell me where you guys are now. Where are you two?"

Caleb yanked John's hands off and sneered. "What are you doing, John? Are you trying to win back the wife you faked your death to leave?"John's expression turned ugly. "That's between my wife and me. It has nothing to do with you! I'm warning you! Give Cece back to me, or—""Or what?" Caleb cut him off with a scoff. "Do you think you're still the powerful CEO you used to be, John? I can crush you now as easily as I can squash a bug. Also, do I need to remind you that Cecilia is no longer your wife?"John was livid, his fists clenching, but he couldn't refute Caleb. He pushed Caleb aside in fury and shouted, "Cece, I know you can hear me! I'm sorry. I was wrong. I know I made a terrible mistake."I started regretting everything from the moment you left. You were always so good to me. You loved me so much. How could I have been so cruel as to hurt you like that?"It's not true that I don't have any feelings for you, Cece. I love you. What I feel for Addy is just an obsession from n

John stood outside the sanatorium gates for a full four hours. Everyone who passed by would look at him curiously.I let out a long sigh.Just as I was about to go downstairs and settle things with him once and for all, Adaline suddenly appeared. Her hair was a mess. She had a jagged scar on her forehead that wasn't very nice to look at. One of her feet was bare and bleeding after getting scraped raw by the gravel. She left bloody footprints behind her.She grabbed John's arm, her words tumbling out almost incoherently. "Darling, why aren't you going home? Where's the baby? Where's our baby? What are you doing here? Do you have another woman? Are you abandoning me? I won't act crazy anymore, so don't leave me, please?"But at the very next second, she shoved him away. "No! I have to return you to Cece. I can't take you away from her! Where's Cece? Cece's sick. She must be in a lot of pain. I have to find her. I have to be with her!"John seized her to stop her from flailing aroun

Greta, who'd just said she would kill me, froze. Henry, who had been sitting on the floor playing with his robot, immediately burst into tears. He ran over and wrapped his arms around John's leg."Where's Mom? Where is she? I want Mom!"Greta's face turned pale, disbelief written all over it."How is that possible? She just stole our company and our house! How can she suddenly be dying? Is she just faking it? Is she trying to gain your sympathy and win you back? She was perfectly fine all along. This whole time, she has…"Her voice faltered abruptly as she recalled what I had to do after taking over the company. To earn the industry's respect, I'd gone to every business gathering, offering toasts and drinking myself silly. She thought about how I'd often gone without eating when I got busy. I'd even gone for three entire days without a meal once. There had been many occasions when I fainted from gastritis and had to be taken to the hospital, but I would end up leaving the hospi

The 32-year-old John stared at his phone, waiting for a response from me. Suddenly, he blacked out. When he opened his eyes again, he discovered that his home had changed drastically. The luxurious mansion he once owned had somehow become a tiny apartment of less than 200 square feet.He was stupefied. What had I done this time?Suddenly, he regretted ever having told me the truth. Infuriated, he made yet another video call to me, the one stuck five years in the past.To his shock, the face that appeared on the screen was identical to his own. It was himself from five years earlier. The 27-year-old John couldn't believe what he was seeing, either. His mind went blank. It was the 32-year-old John who came back to his senses first, and he informed his younger self about how he'd confessed the truth to me not too long ago.At last, the 27-year-old John now knew how I'd suddenly found him."Where is Cecilia now? Just what did she do?" the 32-year-old John fumed while pointing at th

John froze. Adaline looked as if she wanted to say something, but in the end, all she managed was a tearful "I'm sorry."Henry was busy cheering in excitement, while Greta simply scoffed. "This should've happened ages ago. Addy was always meant to be Mrs. Foster!"This whole time, Greta had refused to complete the paperwork to issue John's death certificate. I'd assumed it was because she couldn't accept that her son had died before her, but now I knew that this was the moment she'd been waiting for all along.Sneering, I turned around and left.It took a month for the divorce to be finalized, which felt both painfully long and unbelievably short. Once the divorce certificate was issued, our eight-year marriage officially came to an end.John called out to me, his tone remorseful. "I'll leave the house to you. You can—"I walked off without paying him any attention. Every corner of that house held the memories of him and me, each one covered in blood-stained thorns. Why would I w
