Chapter 2

Penulis: Nameless
He straightened his white coat, acting all official.

"Look, everyone wants money, but there are honest ways to get it. I'm only saying this because you're my friend. Your family has money. Trying to dodge a hospital bill isn't right."

I stared at him, stunned, anger flaring.

"You're a doctor. You should know better than to throw accusations around. The bill is right here, and you're saying I'm trying to get out of paying it?"

The second people heard I was "trying to dodge the bill," every patient nearby turned to stare.

I glared at George Webster.

We'd known each other for over twenty years. My mom had treated him like a second son.

When she got sick, we chose this hospital because George pushed for it.

But when she died three days ago, he didn't even show up.

And now this?

I couldn't have been more disappointed.

George gave me a helpless look, completely dodging the real issue and making me look like the problem.

"You've always been stubborn. Your mom used to put up with it, but she's gone now. It's time to grow up and stop doing whatever you want!

"I know you're grieving, but you can't take it out on the doctors. Your mom's attending physician has practiced medicine for over thirty years. He's highly respected."

Just like that, everyone turned on me.

"So he's just making trouble for no reason. Even his own friend says so. That tells you what kind of guy he is."

"Your mom died, and instead of planning her funeral, you're here causing trouble? We waited forever for these appointments. Just because your mom died doesn't mean everyone else should miss out on treatment!"

"This is ridiculous. No wonder doctor-patient relationships are so bad now. It's because of people like you!"

How had I never noticed how manipulative George was?

He'd already made everyone think I was the problem before they even knew what happened.

I slapped the test reports against his chest. "You think I'm causing trouble, right?

"Then read these out loud. Right here. In front of everyone."

George's face stiffened.

Something was definitely off.

As both a doctor and my closest friend, his first move should've been to check the records.

So why was he dodging me?

George lowered his voice and tried to pull me toward his office.

I shoved him off. "We can talk right here. I just want to know why my mom supposedly needed five CT scans in one day, eight bags of roxithromycin, and 220 pounds of IV fluids.

"She was hospitalized for two weeks after a heart attack, and I paid $180,000!

"Worst of all, she's been dead for three days, and you're still billing her for new treatments!

"If this hospital can't explain that, I'm reporting it."

I called the Health Department on the spot.

The patients who'd been trashing me froze.

"What?"

"Two hundred twenty pounds of IV fluid a day? That's more than some people weigh! They practically pumped her full like a water balloon. That's insane!"

"At first, I didn't know anything about it. When Mr. Carter came to me about the bills, I even threw him out."That day, George said he could fix my son's legal trouble if I framed Mr. Carter. Those medical records and prescriptions were full of problems. They pocketed the money!"And that surgery... they used my name, but I wasn't even involved!"I was wrong. I threw away my conscience for my son."The reporters exchanged stunned looks.Dr. Harding and George tried to explain, but no one let them. The livestream chat exploded too.[Holy crap, it was all a lie! They killed his mom, then framed him. They didn't just ruin his life—they tried to destroy him!][They murdered her! They deserve to die!]The truth was finally out, but I didn't feel relieved.I fought back tears and handed the autopsy report to the reporters."This hospital claimed they put stents in my mom's heart, but the autopsy found nothing. Even the procedure was fake."You're not doctors. You're executioners

Lionel kicked George to the floor. "I've got plenty of ways to deal with you!"George tried to crawl away, but I blocked him.He looked up at me, hatred still burning in his eyes.Even with cameras everywhere, he dropped the act."Daniel Carter, who told you to come here?! If Sophie finds out, you're dead!"I glanced at the stunned woman by the door and clicked my tongue."Looks like she already knows."George froze. The next second, Sophie walked in, her face dark. But instead of blowing up like I expected, she calmly helped George to his feet. Her calm was almost scary.I looked around the trashed office, satisfied. The place was total chaos.Only Dr. Reed stood frozen behind the crowd.Lionel turned to the reporters."I'm filing for divorce. Starting tomorrow, this hospital will have a new director. And I don't care what job her boy toy has."He's FIRED!"The reporters got even more excited and swung their cameras toward me."Mr. Carter, did you drag us out here th

I lowered my voice and turned the camera toward the reporters behind me, letting my anger show."I'm the victim, but those bastards framed me and dragged my name through the mud! What the hell is wrong with this world?"And those idiots online don't have a brain between them. My mom loved me. She was my only family. How could I ever hurt her?"Today, I'm confronting them in front of all of you!"The reporters stared at me, confused, as I kicked the office door in.All my bottled-up anger exploded. The locked door flew open.Inside, they were both half-dressed. Dr. Harding was sprawled across her desk with barely anything on.George's bare ass was pointed straight at the reporters' cameras. Two screams broke the silence, followed by a storm of camera shutters."Get out! Get out! Who let you in? Get the hell out!"George yanked up his pants while Dr. Harding covered herself and scrambled for her clothes. The livestream viewers instantly forgot why they'd tuned in.[OMG, I ca

My face darkened. Then another message popped up.[Bonus tip: George has the night shift tomorrow.]I sent Mason the rest of his payment without hesitation.Days had passed, and people online were still tearing me apart.I posted a video explaining everything.Just like I expected, no one believed me.But the video blew up.I waited anxiously for the autopsy results. The next afternoon, the medical examiner called."What did my mom's autopsy show?"There was a brief silence."The cause of death was drug-induced cardiac arrest. In other words, sudden death."We also found something significant. There were no heart stents in her body."A dull pain hit my chest. I wanted to tear George and the other two apart. My mom had been hospitalized because of warning signs of a heart attack. We thought getting stents early would keep things from getting worse. But there weren't any stents in her body. That hospital had taken our money and killed her.Gritting my teeth, I called lo

George knew better than anyone how much money I had. Once he realized I was running low, he must've backed off because he was afraid I'd ask him for help. But even after draining me dry, he still hadn't spared my mom.The memory of his fake grief sent chills down my spine.I hated myself for not realizing sooner that our friendship had changed. I'd trusted him completely, and it had cost my mom her life.Just then, I heard someone punching in the code to my front door.I turned, dazed, and for one stupid second, I thought it was my mom.My eyes stung. But it was George.I shot to my feet. "You've got some nerve showing up here."He didn't even look at me. Smirking, he walked into the room where my mom's casket lay and set flowers beside her framed photo."Mrs. Carter, wherever you are, watch over your son."Find some way to make him understand that being this stubborn won't do him any good."I walked over, snatched the flowers, and tossed them in the trash."Daniel, look a

Dr. Harding pointed at me. "So you planned all of this! You had your own mother killed, then tried to destroy our hospital's reputation. You're disgusting!"My whole body shook, my thoughts spinning.I bit the inside of my cheek until I tasted blood and finally steadied myself.I turned to Dr. Reed. "You're twisting everything. I never gave you that money. I'm calling the cops and letting them figure out the truth."The second I pulled out my phone, Dr. Reed sighed."Mr. Carter, you wrapped the envelope in plastic so you wouldn't leave fingerprints. What's the point in denying it now?"Besides, why would I frame you? Why would I ruin my own life just to accuse you?"His eyes reddened."I let greed take over. I ruined my life."George walked over with a sneer, giving me a smug look."You should call the cops. Then you and Dr. Reed can go to prison together."My thumb froze over the call button as I tightened my grip on my phone.George had counted on this. That was why he wa
