Chapter 281

Author: Tightrope
Carlos turned his gaze toward Ariel and waved at her. "You're here. This is Stanley Pryce. You probably already know who he is."

Ariel recognized the man before her almost instantly.

Stanley was frequently featured in new coverage related to politics, international summits, the country's diplomatic and military affairs, and so on. He was one of the top officials serving in the Department of Defense.

Though Ariel was typically poised, meeting someone of Stanley's stature rattled her more than she let on.

She walked up to Stanley and greeted him humbly. "Hello, my name is Ariel Walker."

Stanley shook hands with her. He didn't give off a particularly commanding presence as he said in a gentle voice, "I know. I often hear Carlos talk about you. I finally got the chance to meet the impressive young lady today."

Ariel glanced at Carlos.

With a stoic look on his face, Carlos snorted. "When did I ever do that? This girl was so rebellious. I couldn't have been bothered to talk about her.

After the pause, Carlos said, "Good. Now that you're done with him, it's time to focus on yourself."About the postgraduate admissions exam, thanks to your work on developing U.N2, I recommended you for a preliminary exemption. So, just prepare your paperwork and go straight to the final exam. It's mostly a formality."Ariel was stunned. But Carlos didn't give her a chance to ask anything. He hung up on her—classic grumpy Carlos behavior.Still, the news was a pleasant surprise. If she had followed the typical timeline for the postgraduate admissions exam, she wouldn't have been eligible until next year.Ariel suddenly thought of Nancy. The latter seemed to have plans to take the same exam as well.Ariel didn't know how far along Nancy was or what her plans were. And honestly, she didn't care. Other people's goals were theirs. All she wanted was to pursue what truly mattered to her. At the very least, she didn't want to be left with any regrets.…Chad had forced her to take

Ariel hadn't put on any makeup today. After yesterday's sudden hospitalization, her pale, worn-out face showed every trace of what she had been through."I'm fine now," she replied politely.Liam poured water for Ariel and Janice before asking, "Did you get checked out?"Janice answered for Ariel, "She went to the ER last night. They said it was acute stomach pain."But Liam looked thoughtful. With his years of medical experience, he could tell there was something unusual about how thin and delicate Ariel looked. He didn't say anything yet; he just called in Isaac so they could walk Ariel through Leonard's treatment plan together.Ariel trusted them. After all, Liam was a top oncology expert whom even other specialists recommended.Once they had gone over everything, Ariel didn't linger.Liam walked them out. His expression revealed nothing, but he said with measured restraint, "Ms. Walker, you don't look very well. I'd recommend a full checkup."Though Ariel's help last time

Jayson's voice was calm and steady. His words landed squarely in Ariel's ears, leaving her stunned for several seconds.Outside the door, the nurse looked at the striking man in front of her in surprise. A few of the younger nurses nearby couldn't help sneaking glances his way.Jayson lowered his gaze to the nurse. "I need to speak with the doctor from last night. Do you know what time his shift starts?"ER doctors rotated shifts. When it got busy, they were almost impossible to track down.He still had no idea what exactly was wrong with Ariel. The nurse had just opened her mouth to respond when the door in front of her swung open.Ariel stood in the doorway, looking unwell. Her expression was unmistakably displeased. She stared straight at Jayson. He looked down at the sound and met her eyes calmly."Good morning. Do you still feel sick anywhere?" he asked before she could say anything. With a composed expression, he sized her up.It stopped Ariel cold, cutting off the que

Ariel hadn't expected Jayson to show up so fast. She had no idea how he even knew which ward she was in.Jayson looked at her and asked, "What did the doctor say?"She knew he was only here because Betty found out. He had no choice but to put on an act.Frowning, she didn't bother answering. She simply said, "You didn't need to come. Grandma won't know either way."He ignored her, walked over to the bed, and checked the IV bag. "How many more of these do you need?"Ariel frowned. It was clear he had no intention of listening to her.He glanced down at her pale face. The signs of illness were plain to see. "Is Faye Tech really so busy that you have to run yourself into the ground? Take a look in the mirror. See what you look like right now."His expression was cold, and his tone was devoid of warmth. The words were harsh and critical. As he spoke, he opened the thermal food container. Inside were a few light, plain dishes. He unpacked them one by one, set them on the side tabl

Jayson looked at Ariel. Her color hadn't fully returned, and even with light makeup on, a clear trace of exhaustion remained beneath the surface.Frowning, he stood up.Chad understood Ariel didn't want certain people lingering around. Even though he was worried about her condition, he still managed a polite smile and turned to Jayson and the others."Thank you for coming, really. I'll take care of Ari from here. I'll treat you all to a meal sometime to show my gratitude."It was a clear sign they were being shown the door.Zach would always show Chad a measure of respect. He glanced at Ariel. "Okay. If you need anything, just say the word, Mr. Hockney."He agreed that it wasn't right for them to linger. With all the medical checks, Ariel clearly wasn't at ease either.Jayson simply gave a quiet hum of acknowledgement. Without looking at Ariel again, he turned and walked out. There was no hesitation or lingering concern.Watching his straightforward exit, Nancy let out a fain

This was the first time Ariel had heard Jayson speak so sharply. He showed no expression, and his words didn't sound like sarcasm or mockery, but they still cut deep.Jayson didn't bother arguing with her anymore. He turned and left the room to wait outside, giving the doctor space to work.Ariel didn't want to argue either. The pain was slowly easing. Her face was pale as she looked at the doctor. "I know what's wrong with me. No need for a detailed exam."She had unexpectedly hit the affected area, triggering a sudden, sharp abdominal pain. But the doctor's tone was serious. "Your symptoms are unusual. We need to check for internal bleeding."Ariel closed her eyes. She knew all too well that the pain was from her endometrial cancer, made worse by the impact. But at this point, getting tested was the best option."Alright. Once you receive the results, please notify me directly. The person waiting outside has nothing to do with me. Don't bother telling him."Her voice was we
