"I'm sorry, Ms. Walker. You've missed the best window for surgery."

Ariel Walker stood frozen, holding the lab report confirming her endometrial cancer. It took her a long time to gather herself before dialing Colton Zeller, her husband Jayson Larkin's secretary.

The phone rang for ages before Colton finally picked up. His tone was as lazy as ever. "Yes, Mrs. Larkin?"

Ariel curled her stiff fingers into a fist. "Where's Jayson? I need to talk to him."

"Mr. Larkin is unavailable."

"Can you at least pass him the phone?"

Before Colton could answer, a soft voice came through the receiver. "Jayson, what's with all the secrecy? What's the big surprise?"

"Look up."

Ariel heard the familiar, deep voice that held a tenderness she would never receive.

The next moment, Colton hung up the phone.

At the same time, a thunderous explosion echoed across the harbor. Ariel lifted her head, her face drained of color.

Beautiful fireworks burst into the night sky, painting the darkness with dazzling streaks of color, just like in fairy tales.

Outside the hospital, a crowd had gathered.

"Did you hear? The CEO of Bluum Corp, Mr. Larkin, spent over 20 million dollars on this firework show for his girlfriend's birthday!"

"It's Nancy Stanton we're talking about! An Arcadia Tech PhD! Every top company in the country is fighting to hire her. She's smart, gorgeous, comes from an elite family, and her boyfriend is rich and ridiculously hot!"

"No wonder Mr. Larkin adores her. A woman like that is a status symbol."

Ariel stared at the brilliant fireworks for a long time before her fingers slowly loosened. The lab report slipped from her grasp, fluttering to the ground.

She turned and walked away.

Jayson returned home in the early hours to find Ariel sitting alone in the dark living room.

He flipped on the light, frowning. "Why aren't you asleep?"

She looked up at him. His jacket was draped over his arm. His cold eyes met hers, as impassive as ever.

For years, Ariel had convinced herself that he was simply distant by nature. But tonight, she finally understood. The man she shared a bed with was ice, but in another woman's world, he burned like fire.

"I couldn't sleep," she said quietly. "By the way, I went to the hospital today."

Jayson tossed his jacket onto the couch and asked casually, "What did the doctor say?"

Ariel had been complaining about stomach pain for weeks. He had promised to take her to get it checked out but kept postponing it.

Whether it was a multi-million-dollar contract or tricky project issues, something always came up.

Just yesterday, Jayson had told her he'd go to the hospital with her. But Nancy actually hid her birthday from him?

He had rushed straight to Nancy's side, barely making it in time to set off the fireworks.

Ariel, as it turned out, hadn't even crossed his mind.

"Nothing serious. I'll be fine." Ariel lowered her gaze. "What about you? What brings you home tonight?"

Jayson hesitated for a second, then stepped closer.

He pulled her into his arms, his breath warm against her neck. His voice was low and husky as he said, "It's your ovulation window.

"You were the one who agreed to sleep with me on these nights every month to give my family an heir. Have you forgotten?"

The scent of women's perfume on Jayson was so thick that it shattered the last shreds of Ariel's dignity like a bullet.

Jayson was right. In the three years they'd been married, he had never wanted her. The only reason he even came home and slept with her was because of his grandmother, Betty Stewart, who constantly nagged about carrying on the Larkin bloodline.

She was lost in thought for a moment. Having a baby seemed impossible now.

Ariel had always been submissive. But tonight, something inside her snapped.

"Aren't you worried your girlfriend will be jealous?"

Her eyes gleamed in the dim light like a caged animal's might before it bared its teeth.

Jayson looked at her and noticed the seriousness in her expression as her gaze grew colder.

After a long silence, he let out a cold laugh.

"Why should I be worried? We're in a secret marriage. You're the one hiding in the shadows. You chose to be the side character. So why are you acting like the main one?"

  • Dead at Heart   Chapter 889

It soon became clear to everyone that Alicia meant nothing to Wade. His heart belonged to Janice. Bradley came to see Janice several times, begging her to talk some sense into Wade. Her reply was always the same. "I'm sure his sister would be more than happy to help you with that."Each time, Bradley was left speechless. After three months of wallowing in misery, Wade finally applied for retirement from military service. He took a position at the Garner family's company branch in Eldoria, all to remain in the same city as Janice.Chad was exasperated when he found out. He watched Janice closely for days, but she carried on as usual. Their interactions were still those of the closest friends; she seemed completely carefree and unaffected. She never sought out news about Wade, and when she heard any, she would simply remark, "I see."Janice realized she was like Ariel in that way. She refused to waste time despairing over someone who didn't deserve her affection. She would always

  • Dead at Heart   Chapter 888

If Wade had found out about everything, then…Alicia struggled to maintain her composure, but the subtle shifts in her expression betrayed her. Wade had been bluffing about having proof. Even so, he had seen the flash of panic in her eyes—proof enough that Janice had been telling the truth. He had come demanding an explanation, and now everything was clear.Alicia had succeeded. After three years of meticulous planning, she had finally driven Janice away from him.The realization hit Wade like a physical blow. His eyes reddened as he fixed a malevolent gaze on Alicia."Alicia Newman, it sickens me to know how vile and despicable you are. You slandered a woman who never once treated you with malice or hostility. Did you actually think I would ever fall for you?"He bent down, staring straight into her eyes, which instantly welled with tears. This was her usual tactic—playing the victim to evoke his sympathy and a sense of duty to compensate for Janice. But now, only a cold ligh

Wade slumped to the ground near the door, looking utterly lost and defeated. Bradley waited outside in his car for a long time. As dusk began to fall and Wade still hadn't emerged, Bradley finally got out and headed into the residential area. His expression hardened the moment he found Wade. He had never seen the promising young man look so pathetic and broken."Wade, what's wrong?" Bradley asked, stepping closer.Wade didn't seem to hear him. His eyes were glazed over and rimmed with red.He had been sitting there for so long, and Janice hadn't come out to speak to him. It was clear he had ruined everything.Bradley, no longer bothering to be gentle with Wade's feelings, hauled him up from the ground and started pulling him toward the entrance.Only when they reached the car did Wade snap out of his daze and begin to resist. "I'm not leaving! She hasn't forgiven me yet. She's just upset…" His voice grew increasingly emotional.Bradley, both irritated and agitated, finally sn

  • Dead at Heart   Chapter 886

Janice swallowed hard and took a slight step back. "It's too late, Wade. It's all too late. I gave you countless chances, but you never made me a priority. "You always assumed I would be fine with you neglecting me, with you choosing someone else over me, again and again. "You got spoiled by the old Janice, who loved you wholeheartedly. But Wade, feelings change. You kept choosing Alicia over me. You knew it would hurt me, yet you chose to play dumb or brush it aside."You knew what you were doing was wrong, but you counted on me getting over it because my love for you was so deep. You knew everything; you just didn't care enough about my feelings."Janice understood that it wasn't that Wade didn't care at all; it was that he never cared enough. He thought he could skip the essential work of a relationship—the comforting, the nurturing, the loving—simply because Janice's love was a given. He was arrogantly confident she would never leave him, so he brazenly repeated his mistake

  • Dead at Heart   Chapter 885

Bradley slammed his foot down on the gas pedal.Upon reaching their destination, an ashen-faced Wade jumped out of the car and rushed into the building.Janice lived in a high-end residential complex where only residents or those with management approval could use the elevators. Wade had access since his face was stored in the security database, allowing him to bypass the facial recognition system. He went up to the right floor, but Janice wasn't home. She hadn't returned to her apartment.Wade tried calling her, but all his attempts failed. She didn't answer his calls or respond on WhatsApp.With no other choice, Wade went back down and borrowed Bradley's phone to try again. This time, someone finally picked up. A woman's calm voice came through the line. "Hello?"Wade immediately breathed a sigh of relief. Just as he was about to speak, a man's voice sounded in the background."Honey, you can put your things here. There's more than enough space in this house. Arrange them h

  • Dead at Heart   Chapter 884

Bradley knew the two well enough to recognize that Wade was often weak to Alicia's pleas and requests. Were Wade by himself, he would answer; but Alicia's presence could easily complicate the matter. Regardless, had Wade realized how important today's wedding was—and resisted Alicia's influence—he might not have lost his final chance to make things right. The door swung open.Wade looked toward the stage, but his bride was nowhere to be seen. The hall buzzed with murmurs as guests whispered among themselves. As more people noticed Wade's arrival, the looks they gave him made his chest tighten with unease.Charles was the first to confront him. His body trembled with rage as he whipped his arm back and delivered a brutal slap across Wade's face. "Wade Garner, you're an absolute disgrace! Do you not know what day it is? Do you even realize what you've done? You've turned our family into a laughingstock!"Wade ignored the burning sting on his cheek. He scanned the hall again
