"I'm sorry, Ms. Walker. You've missed the best window for surgery."

Ariel Walker stood frozen, holding the lab report confirming her endometrial cancer. It took her a long time to gather herself before dialing Colton Zeller, her husband Jayson Larkin's secretary.

The phone rang for ages before Colton finally picked up. His tone was as lazy as ever. "Yes, Mrs. Larkin?"

Ariel curled her stiff fingers into a fist. "Where's Jayson? I need to talk to him."

"Mr. Larkin is unavailable."

"Can you at least pass him the phone?"

Before Colton could answer, a soft voice came through the receiver. "Jayson, what's with all the secrecy? What's the big surprise?"

"Look up."

Ariel heard the familiar, deep voice that held a tenderness she would never receive.

The next moment, Colton hung up the phone.

At the same time, a thunderous explosion echoed across the harbor. Ariel lifted her head, her face drained of color.

Beautiful fireworks burst into the night sky, painting the darkness with dazzling streaks of color, just like in fairy tales.

Outside the hospital, a crowd had gathered.

"Did you hear? The CEO of Bluum Corp, Mr. Larkin, spent over 20 million dollars on this firework show for his girlfriend's birthday!"

"It's Nancy Stanton we're talking about! An Arcadia Tech PhD! Every top company in the country is fighting to hire her. She's smart, gorgeous, comes from an elite family, and her boyfriend is rich and ridiculously hot!"

"No wonder Mr. Larkin adores her. A woman like that is a status symbol."

Ariel stared at the brilliant fireworks for a long time before her fingers slowly loosened. The lab report slipped from her grasp, fluttering to the ground.

She turned and walked away.

Jayson returned home in the early hours to find Ariel sitting alone in the dark living room.

He flipped on the light, frowning. "Why aren't you asleep?"

She looked up at him. His jacket was draped over his arm. His cold eyes met hers, as impassive as ever.

For years, Ariel had convinced herself that he was simply distant by nature. But tonight, she finally understood. The man she shared a bed with was ice, but in another woman's world, he burned like fire.

"I couldn't sleep," she said quietly. "By the way, I went to the hospital today."

Jayson tossed his jacket onto the couch and asked casually, "What did the doctor say?"

Ariel had been complaining about stomach pain for weeks. He had promised to take her to get it checked out but kept postponing it.

Whether it was a multi-million-dollar contract or tricky project issues, something always came up.

Just yesterday, Jayson had told her he'd go to the hospital with her. But Nancy actually hid her birthday from him?

He had rushed straight to Nancy's side, barely making it in time to set off the fireworks.

Ariel, as it turned out, hadn't even crossed his mind.

"Nothing serious. I'll be fine." Ariel lowered her gaze. "What about you? What brings you home tonight?"

Jayson hesitated for a second, then stepped closer.

He pulled her into his arms, his breath warm against her neck. His voice was low and husky as he said, "It's your ovulation window.

"You were the one who agreed to sleep with me on these nights every month to give my family an heir. Have you forgotten?"

The scent of women's perfume on Jayson was so thick that it shattered the last shreds of Ariel's dignity like a bullet.

Jayson was right. In the three years they'd been married, he had never wanted her. The only reason he even came home and slept with her was because of his grandmother, Betty Stewart, who constantly nagged about carrying on the Larkin bloodline.

She was lost in thought for a moment. Having a baby seemed impossible now.

Ariel had always been submissive. But tonight, something inside her snapped.

"Aren't you worried your girlfriend will be jealous?"

Her eyes gleamed in the dim light like a caged animal's might before it bared its teeth.

Jayson looked at her and noticed the seriousness in her expression as her gaze grew colder.

After a long silence, he let out a cold laugh.

"Why should I be worried? We're in a secret marriage. You're the one hiding in the shadows. You chose to be the side character. So why are you acting like the main one?"

Jayson's gaze shifted from the laptop screen to Matt.Frowning, Nancy asked, "Matt, what did you just say?"She thought she had misheard.Likewise, Matt thought he hadn't slept well last night and was seeing things. He held his phone out toward Jayson and Nancy."Faye Tech's statement didn't address the plagiarism accusation at all. It simply states that Ariel developed the flight control system independently, and that it wasn't a product of the Faye Tech team."Nancy glanced down at the screen. Her expression quickly darkened. She found this statement absurd."You were just telling Mr. Hockney he could offer up a scapegoat, and he didn't seem to like that idea. Then he turns around and throws Ariel under the bus?" Matt said, incredulous. At this point in the scandal, anyone pushed to the front would be forced to take the fall.Nancy forced herself to calm down and quickly tried to figure out what Chad was getting at.Chad and Ariel were so close. He gave her everything to hel

Ariel was sure there had to be a record somewhere. She just had to look.Carlos was surprised when he heard the whole plagiarism allegation, but he didn't take it too seriously. He believed it could be handled.Ariel wasn't someone a crisis like this could bring down. She and Chad spent most of the day in the Hockney residence study. They searched through two laptops, digging into the storage folders and database files.Janice called a few times during that stretch. Some companies had already begun switching sides. They wanted to terminate contracts with Faye Technologies and partner with Veyo Solutions instead. They claimed it was because Faye Technologies was at fault.Ariel didn't even blink. "Fine. Terminate. But blacklist them from our future collaboration list."Chad agreed. That was how most businesses were—self-serving to the core. But choosing sides too early could be suicide in disguise.…By the next morning, Chad suddenly stood up. "Found it!"Ariel, dizzy with f

Ariel didn't know the details of Veyo Solutions' new system yet.But with engineers from multiple countries assisting Nancy, it was no surprise they had results to show. That much, she didn't find suspicious.Chad scoffed. "Jayson really did clear the path for Nancy. Just as we hit a bump, Veyo gets to bask in the spotlight."Ariel didn't respond. She didn't care what Jayson did.Right now, what mattered was finding solid proof and calming down their business partners. These were no small tasks. After wrapping up a meeting with one of their partner companies, Ariel felt a dull ache forming behind her eyes. It wasn't that she was overwhelmed, just drained. All the unexpected chaos had forced her to burn through more energy than usual. Now, even standing upright felt like a challenge.Chad noticed. "It's lunchtime. Let's go eat first."Ariel didn't argue. They chose a restaurant nearby in the World Trade Center. It was a members-only establishment. Chad, being a black-card memb

Ariel understood what Chad meant. The flight control system was incredibly complex. The base code had gone through layer upon layer of iteration and development.Even if the overlapping section with Veyo Solutions wasn't part of the system's core function, any duplication could still be used to accuse them of plagiarism."Ari, Chad, Veyo just released a statement." Janice pushed the door open and slid a tablet across the table.Ariel glanced at it and nearly let out a cold snort. The so-called plagiarism scandal between Faye Technologies and the Veyo Solutions engineer had already gone viral. The official statement from Veyo Solutions read, "Veyo Solutions is committed to uncovering the truth. We will not allow the hard work of our engineers and technicians to be plagiarized."We will apply to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board to invalidate Faye Technologies' patent for the flight control system. If evidence confirms our claims, we will pursue full legal responsibility."This s

Chad couldn't help but let out a chuckle at that. So that was what Nancy was after.Nancy looked at him and said, "Mr. Hockney, in our line of work, others may not understand, but you do. We put in endless late nights and countless hours, pouring ourselves into data and technical proposals. That's why we should all be protecting intellectual property, shouldn't we?""Have you done your investigation properly?" Chad didn't bother to answer her. He went straight to the point. "As of now, the accusations are coming solely from Veyo."We won't accept being labeled based on a one-sided claim. Ms. Stanton, please send me your detailed evidence. We'll conduct a thorough investigation and respond accordingly."Terrance, being a foreigner, only understood bits of the conversation as they were talking in Crausian, but everyone at the table was fluent in Merinian.Smiling, he said, "I can provide the contents of my email as proof. Mr. Hockney, Ms. Walker, if you need it, I can send it to you

  • Dead at Heart   Chapter 374

This accusation was just outright ridiculous.Ariel frowned and scrolled down through the comments. Not all of them were friendly.Faye Technologies was definitely under a wave of negative backlash. She was surprised at how sudden it all was."What did Veyo say? Have they contacted us yet?" Ariel asked calmly after a moment of thought.Chad tapped the table, thinking. "Not yet. But they can't possibly be clueless about this. Something's got to be done. Faye Tech isn't taking the fall for a setup like this."Ariel agreed. Her flight control system carried serious weight in the domestic market. Any scandal now could shake Faye Technologies' reputation badly. She made a swift decision. Her expression hardened as she said, "Chad, get on the phone with Veyo. Arrange to meet with that engineer."This was a blatant attempt to frame them.Chad nodded. He had Nancy's number, so he dialed her directly. She didn't deliberately avoid the call or cause any trouble. Instead, she picked u
