Chapter 6

Author: Goldie Bloom
The next day, my parents hosted a family reunion party at home and invited a houseful of relatives and friends.

Sharon kept checking her phone, looking distracted.

"Sharon? Hey? When are you and David going to get married and have kids?" Someone nudged her twice before she finally snapped back to reality.

Dad assumed she was just shy and laughed. "David already told us everything. Kyle is a jerk. He forced you into marrying him. I'll give him some money to divorce you. Then, you and David can both move to Ogland with us."

Paula chimed in, "Sharon, you've liked David since you were little. I've always known how you felt about him. Just say yes."

David reached across the table and laced his fingers with hers, gazing at her lovingly. "Sharon, I came back this time just to be with you again. Please marry me!"

The guests immediately rose to their feet, clapping and cheering.

"Say yes! Say yes!"

Everyone in the room was rooting for them.

Sharon always gave David whatever he wanted, so I figured she'd do the same this time and agree to marry him.

Unexpectedly, Sharon suddenly yanked her hand away and snapped, "Are you people out of your minds? Did moving overseas rot your brains?"

As Sharon stormed out of the house, David chased after her and demanded, "Sharon, you used to love me. You got close to Kyle back then just to distract him from his studies. So why won't you be with me now?"

Sharon shook her head. "David, that was so many years ago. Stop bringing it up."

Seeing that she wouldn't budge, David suddenly clutched the left side of his abdomen, his voice filled with anguish.

"Sharon, I'm only asking for one thing. If you say yes, I'll never bother you again," he said.

Sharon stopped in her tracks.

"The doctor said my kidney function is failing, and my body is too weak. It'll be nearly impossible for me to have kids," David whimpered.

"I'll be lucky if I live another ten or 15 years. Please have a baby with me through IVF. Give my parents something to live for. Can you do that for me?"

I couldn't believe anyone could be this shameless.

Sharon forced herself to tear her eyes away from his pale face. "No! Kyle got so mad at me for sending him to that reform center. He won't even come home now.

"I've already paid you back for that kidney. I funded your studies abroad for years! If he found out that I had a child with you, I couldn't deal with the consequences!"

With that, Sharon got into the car and told Adam, "To the Behavioral Reform Center."

Adam's palms were sweating on the steering wheel. He said nervously, "Ms. Griffin, Mr. Walsh said yesterday that he didn't want to see you. Maybe you shouldn't go."

Sharon's brows furrowed. "Since when do you get to tell me what to do?"

Adam went quiet.

Before long, Sharon was standing outside the Behavioral Reform Center. She looked down at her phone. Our chat still contained only the message she'd sent the day before.

She frowned slightly and sent another one. "I'm waiting outside your school right now to pick you up. Come out."

Time passed, and the sun began to sink. Sharon stood there for a long time until her legs began to tremble.

Adam hurried over, trying to persuade her to leave. But Sharon shoved him aside and stormed straight through the gates.

"Hey! Who are you?" The security guard shouted at her.

As they argued, a man who looked like an instructor came over and asked what she was doing there.

When Sharon told him she was looking for Kyle, the man was stunned.

"Kyle died a long time ago. Someone already came and collected his body!" he said.

"That's impossible. Our son would never do something like this. Officer, please look into this again."Sharon's face was pale as she said, "I'm sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Walsh. I lied to you. David isn't

Sharon stood frozen. When she finally processed what she'd heard, she grabbed the nurse and demanded, "What was the name of the man who donated the kidney?"The nurse thought for a moment and replied, "I think his last name was Walsh. Why?"Sharon's face went deathly pale. She fumbled for her phone and called the organ donation center."The person who donated a kidney to me… Was it Kyle Walsh?" she asked. The man on the other end fell silent for a moment before answering carefully, "I'm sorry, but we're not allowed to disclose that information."After Sharon pressed him several times, the man on the phone finally gave in. "Yes. Mr. Walsh asked us to keep it from you. He was afraid you wouldn't accept the kidney if you knew. We later heard the surgery went well and that you two got married. We hope you're happy together."Paula heard everything. Her face filled with shock. "So Kyle was the one who donated the kidney to you. But then how did David—"Before she could finish, Shar

Sharon's chest heaved with anger, her eyes bloodshot. "I sent him to learn how to be a proper man, and somehow he came out even worse!"A flicker of smugness crossed David's eyes.He got out of bed, picked up the folder, and said gently, "It can't be. Kyle loves you so much. He couldn't have done that. He's probably just trying to make you jealous. Sharon, let me go with you and find him."Seeing how understanding he was, Sharon was deeply moved. But after a long silence, she shook her head. "Forget it. Why should I bother looking for someone so heartless?"Just then, Sharon's phone rang."Hello, is this Mrs. Walsh? I'm calling from Oak Hill Funeral Home. I'm sorry to inform you that your husband Kyle Walsh's cremation has been completed, and his ashes are ready for collection."Sharon clenched her fists until her knuckles cracked. "I'll be right there," she said with a cold, fake smile. My heart sank. She was already furious, so that call would just sound like another one of m

David started talking about his time studying abroad."Sharon, remember when I first went overseas? You messaged me almost 100 times a day. My classmates all thought I had some crazy jealous girlfriend checking up on me."He smiled gently. "It wasn't until I convinced you to focus on work that you cut it down to ten."Sharon's hand trembled slightly. "Was it really that much?" she murmured."It was," David said softly. "Honestly, if it wasn't for your encouragement back then, I don't think I would've made it through."Something suddenly occurred to Sharon, and she looked up. "I didn't message Kyle once all semester. Is that why he's so mad?"Before David could say anything, she grabbed her coat and headed for the door.Paula called after her, asking where she was going.Sharon forced a smile and replied, "I'm going back to the reform center to look for Kyle. I think he's really angry this time. He doesn't reply to my messages at all."Adam stepped in, trying hard to stop her.

Sharon suddenly curled her lips into a wry smile. "You gave him way too much allowance every month. He went and got all this fake blood just to scare me and hide from me, and you didn't even do anything about it."She sighed softly and walked out of the dorm.Outside the building, the instructor said, "I told you, Kyle is dead."Sharon looked at him as if he were still putting on an act."I have to admit, you're a pretty good actor. Tell Kyle he almost fooled me and ask him to come out. He can stop hiding," she said. The instructor stared at her in disbelief. "He's really dead. He died on his first day here. Your family already sent someone to collect his body!"He sounded completely sincere, but Sharon still didn't believe him.Her patience finally ran out, and she lashed out. "Fine. Keep covering for him. Once I find him, I'll pull him out of this school. Your center won't get another cent from me!"After speaking, she stormed off.Adam let out a long sigh of relief and quic

Sharon shuddered violently. Her face turned so pale she looked ready to faint. She couldn't believe what she'd just heard. "What did you say?"I was just as confused as she was. After dying a painful death from my illness, my soul had left my body. The next thing I knew, I was at David's welcome-home party.I had no idea what had happened over the past few months or who had come to collect my body.Adam's eyes darted around. He immediately pointed at the instructor and snapped, "Stop talking nonsense. This is a legitimate school. How could anyone have died here? Are you even an employee?"Adam's words made something click for Sharon. She let out a cold laugh. "So there really are people inside the center taking bribes. No wonder negative news about you has been spreading like wildfire."She looked at the instructor arrogantly. "How much did Kyle pay you to lie to me? Faking his own death? I can't believe he'd come up with something like that."The instructor looked completely ba
