The restaurant was almost empty when I walked in. I had planned to surprise my husband. It was our wedding anniversary, and I had spent the entire afternoon choosing his favorite suit and buying the watch he had been admiring for months. I smiled as I entered the private room he had reserved.
Then I stopped. My husband wasn't alone. A woman was sitting beside him, her hand resting comfortably on his chest. VIVIAN MOORE My biggest enemy. For a few seconds, I couldn't breathe. My husband quickly stood up. "You're here." His voice sounded nervous. I stared at Vivian, then at the glass of wine between them. "So you two are together?" Neither of them answered. That silence told me everything. I placed the gift box on the table. "I came here to surprise you." My husband looked away. Vivian only smiled, That smile made something inside me break, I turned and walked out without saying another word. I didn't cry until I got home. That night, while my husband was still out, I opened his laptop.I wasn't looking for anything, I only wanted to know how long the affair had been going on. I found messages. Hundreds of them. Then I found the bank transfers. Money had been sent to Vivian almost every week. Large amounts. Far more than I could imagine. My hands trembled as I opened the records. There were transfers from our joint account. Transfers from my personal investment account. Even money from one of my properties. He had been stealing from me. For how long, I didn't know. Then I saw one message from Vivian. "Once she's gone, everything will finally belong to us." My heart stopped. Gone? I read the message again, Before I could look further, I heard the front door open. My husband was home. I quickly closed the laptop and wiped my tears. He walked into the room. "Why are you still awake?" I looked at the man I had loved for years. For the first time, I wondered if I had ever truly known him. "I want a divorce." His expression changed. "What's that?" "You heard me." He stared at me for several seconds before laughing. "You think I'll just let you walk away?" I said nothing. He stepped closer. And for the first time, I saw something frightening in his eyes, Not love nor sadness. That was when I realized the truth my husband wasn't afraid of losing me. He was afraid of losing something, but what could that be?. He didn't say another word. He simply walked past me and went upstairs. I stood there, watching him disappear, my heart pounding, I had expected anger. Maybe even sadness. I hadn't expected that cold look in his eyes. That night, I barely slept. By morning, I had already made up my mind. I would divorce him. I spent the next few days gathering every document connected to my properties, accounts, and investments. I moved what I could and contacted my lawyer without telling him. But my husband noticed the change. He became unusually attentive. He brought me flowers and apologized. He promised that Vivian meant nothing to him. I almost laughed. How could someone who had been secretly sending her my money say that with a straight face? Then one evening, he came home with divorce papers. He placed them on the table. "If you want a divorce so badly, sign these." I looked at the papers, Something felt wrong. "Why are you agreeing so easily?" He smiled. "Because I love you." A lie. I signed and went straight to my room. But before I could celebrate, my lawyer called. There was a problem. “Please come to my office as soon as possible.” His voice was serious. I sat up in bed. “What happened?” “There’s something you need to see.” I dressed quickly and left the house before my husband will notice. When I arrived, my lawyer placed several documents in front of me. I stared at them in confusion. “What are these?” “Property transfers.” My stomach tightened. “Your husband has been moving assets into different names. Some of them are already connected to some one named, Vivian.” I felt my blood run cold. “How much?” He gave me a number. I couldn't speak, It was a huge part of my inheritance. “He's been preparing for this for a long time,” my lawyer continued. “You need to be careful.” I picked up the documents with trembling hands. That was when my phone rang. My husband. I answered. “Where are you?” he asked “At my lawyer's office.” There was silence. Then his voice became cold. “Come home, we need to talk." "We have nothing left to talk about." I ended the call. My lawyer looked at me " you shouldn't go home alone." "I'll be fine." I gathered the documents and left my lawyer's office that night I drove home slowly, my mind filled with questions. The road was busy, and the sky was already dark. I stopped at a traffic light and glanced at my phone. There was a message from my husband. I stared at it for a moment before putting my phone away. The light turned green. I continued driving. A few minutes later, I noticed a car behind me. It had been following me for several minutes. I changed lanes. It changed lanes too. My heart began to beat faster. I looked into the rearview mirror again. The car was getting closer. Then suddenly— CRASH! The impact sent my car spinning across the road. My head slammed against the steering wheel. Glass shattered around me. I tried to move, but pain shot through my body. Smoke filled the car. People were shouting outside. I struggled to open my eyes. Through the broken windshield, I saw the other car speeding away. I tried to remember its license plate. But everything around me was becoming blurry. My hand reached for my phone but I couldn't feel my fingers. Then I heard someone shouting that an ambulance was coming. My eyes slowly closed. And the last thought that crossed my mind was my husband. I wondered if he knew. I wondered if he would even care. Then everything went black. From early morning, people had been moving in and out of the compound, carrying flowers, decorations, food, drinks, and beautifully wrapped gifts. The garden had been transformed with rows of white flowers and elegant lights hanging from the trees. Tables covered in crisp white cloth had been arranged across the lawn, while a large stage stood at the far end with Adrian's name written across a golden backdrop.Inside, the house was equally impressive. Crystal glasses sparkled beneath the chandeliers, fresh flowers filled almost every corner, and soft music played through the speakers as staff hurried around preparing for the guests.Vivian had clearly spared no expense. She wanted everything to be perfect for Adrian.I spent most of the afternoon moving between the kitchen and the dining area, following every instruction she threw at me. She had been particularly difficult all day, finding fault with almost everything I did.“Mia, those glasses are not arranged properly.”“Mia, take t
The sound of the front gate opening pulled my attention away from the laundry I was folding. I glanced toward the window and saw Adrian's car entering the compound. They were back.A few moments later, the front door opened, and Vivian walked in carrying several shopping bags. Mason followed behind her with a small toy tucked under his arm, while two more bags were handed to them by the driver.I stared at the amount of shopping they had brought home. It looked like they had emptied an entire store.“Mia!”I immediately walked toward Vivian. “Yes, ma'am?”“Come and help with these.”I took several of the bags from her without saying anything. Mason walked past us, holding his new toy proudly.“Look what Mommy bought me!”I glanced at it. “That's nice.”He smiled before running upstairs.Vivian watched him go with a satisfied expression.“He wanted it, so I bought it.”Of course she did. I carried the bags into the living room and began arranging them where she directed. There were clo
I was dusting the dining table when I heard footsteps coming from the staircase.I glanced up and saw Adrian walking downstairs with Vivian beside him. They were dressed as though they were going somewhere together, and from the way Vivian kept talking to him, I assumed it was another one of their outings.I quickly lowered my head and continued cleaning. I had become very good at pretending not to notice things. It was the only way I could survive in this house.“Mia!” Vivian's sharp voice made me look up. “Yes, ma'am?” “Why are you still standing there? Go and make sure the car is ready.”I swallowed my irritation. “Yes, ma'am.”Before I could move, a little boy came running down the stairs. He looked about six years old, judging by his small frame and childish face. I still didn't know his exact age, but I had seen enough of him around the house to know that he was Vivian and Adrian's son. the one Sophia talked about. He ran straight toward Vivian.“Mommy, are we going out?”Vi
I tightened my grip on my phone. Xavier stood in front of me, waiting. “Give me the phone.” My heart pounded so loudly that I was afraid he could hear it. If he opened my gallery, he would see the pictures I had taken of Adrian's documents. There was no reasonable explanation for a maid to secretly photograph business files. “I don't understand why you need my phone, sir,” I said quietly. His expression remained calm. “You took pictures of those documents.” “I didn't.”His eyes moved to the drawer. Then back to me. “Mia.” The way he said my name made me nervous.“I saw what you were doing.”I lowered my gaze, trying to think. What was I supposed to do now?Run?That would only make me look guilty.Tell him the truth?, That was impossible. Xavier took another step toward me.“Give it to me.” Before I could answer, the sound of footsteps came from the hallway. The study door opened.Vivian walked in. Her eyes immediately moved between Xavier and me.“What is going on?” I took a
The next morning, I was in the kitchen preparing breakfast when I heard a car pull into the driveway. I glanced through the window. A black car had stopped in front of the house. few moments later, Vivian's voice came from the living room. “Xavier? What are you doing here so early?” I continued arranging the plates, barely paying attention.“I came to see Adrian,” a man's voice replied.Something about that voice made me pause. I slowly looked toward the kitchen door. A tall, handsome man stood in the living room, dressed neatly in a dark suit. His face seemed familiar. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't remember where I had seen him before.“Adrian is upstairs,” Vivian said. “I'll call him.”Xavier nodded. Then his eyes moved toward me. For a brief moment, we stared at each other.“Who is she?” he asked.“The new maid,” Vivian answered. His gaze remained on me. “What's your name?”“Mia,” I replied quietly. He nodded slowly.“Mia.”Before either of us could say anything
“What did you say your name is again?” I lowered my head and tightened my grip on the small bag in my hands. “Mia Anderson, ma’am.” Vivian stared at me for a few seconds, studying my face. "Where did you work before?” "I worked for a family in the city.” “For how long?” "Almost three years.” She nodded slowly. "And why did you leave?” "The family moved away.” It was all part of the story Sophia and I had prepared. Every question had an answer, so as every detail about my new identity had been carefully arranged. Vivian looked me over again. "You look very young.” "I can work hard, ma’am.” "I didn't ask if you could work hard.” I lowered my eyes. "Sorry, ma’am.” She smiled faintly. "You'll learn quickly.” "Thank you.” Vivian turned and walked into the house. "Come inside.” I followed her. Every step felt strange. This was my home,I knew every corner of this place. The staircase where my husband and I had taken our wedding photographs. The living room where we used
