Chapter 2

Author: No Coriander
"And tell Gracie that if she doesn't want to end up the way she did last time, she'd better stop meddling in our marriage," Elliot said coldly.

His words made my heart sink to my stomach.

So I wasn't the only one reborn. Elliot was too!

But why would he think I was lying? He should know how Sophie had been violated, how she and her unborn child had died, and how Henry had been badly hurt in that previous life.

Why, with a second chance at life, had he become this cold? Was it because Ava once said that Sophie and I were in it together?

The footsteps outside stopped just on the other side of the wall.

Soon, louder bangs rattled the door, and the safe rattled with a metallic clang.

We could only watch as a gaping hole was smashed through the door. The intruders, lit by the light behind them, immediately caught sight of the three of us.

They grinned and snorted. "Well, well. Didn't expect to actually find someone hiding in here," said the leader.

I stepped in front of Sophie and Henry, inching backward.

However, the men crawled through the gap. The leader kicked the iron cabinet out of the way and shoved the door fully open.

"Did you really think you could hide? We're not amateurs. We're here because someone paid us to settle a score. Don't blame us. Blame Elliot for crossing the wrong people."

My whole body trembled with fear as I stared at the dagger gleaming coldly in his hand.

Their sinister gazes fell on Sophie.

"I know her. That's Elliot's wife. I wonder what it's like to sleep with a pregnant woman."

Sophie glared at them, clutching Henry as she backed away. "Stay away from us!"

Swallowing my terror, I leaned close to her and whispered, "There's a switch behind that vase. Run out when I open it. Once you're outside, head to the Flynn residence and find Lionel. Tell him to come save me."

The man with the knife drew closer. We had nowhere left to run.

I had already died miserably once. This time, I couldn't let Sophie and Henry suffer the same fate, no matter what.

"Gracie, I can't leave you here alone."

I pinched her arm hard, desperate to snap her out of it. "You're carrying a baby, and Henry's only three. Listen to me. Take him and get out of here. I'll hold them off. If you can find Lionel, we still have a chance."

Just then, the man lunged at us.

But before I could move, Sophie twisted the switch with one hand and shoved Henry into my arms with the other. Then, she threw herself forward, wrapping her arms around the men's legs.

"Gracie, go! Take Henry and run!"

Her voice was thick with grief and the ache of separating from her child.

"Sophie!"

Just as the door was about to shut, I caught sight of the man choking Sophie and slamming her hard onto the floor.

Every shred of reason shattered inside me.

"Gracie, go! Find help!"

A chill ripped through me, but the will to survive crushed everything else.

I knew if I stayed, the three of us would be doomed. So I clutched Henry tight and bolted through the small door at the back of the hidden room.

Once outside, I didn't dare look back. I just ran, sprinting for my life.

Along the way, I fell and scraped my knee. A large patch of skin peeled back to reveal bloody flesh. Still, I gritted my teeth and sprinted madly toward the Flynn residence.

By the time I reached its iron gates, I slammed the doorbell and pounded on the gate in a frenzy.

"Lionel! Lionel! Please save Sophie! Lionel, help us!"

The lock clicked, and Lionel Flynn appeared in casual clothes. His brow furrowed as he took in my battered state.

When Elliot got the news, he rushed over, ready to catch Ava in the act.But she widened her eyes in disbelief. "Mr. Quinn, are you joking? I'm not your wife. What gives you the right to come at me like this?"She continued, "Besides, plenty of people like me. I can't just be with anyone who fancies me, can I? Plus, you rely on me to pay for your meals and clothes. Why should I be with you? You're broke."Elliot, unaccustomed to such insults, instantly flew into a rage. But the rich heir next to Ava had several bodyguards with him. They pinned Elliot to the ground and beat him until his face was bruised and swollen.Still, Elliot blamed everyone but himself. He even sent daily messages to insult me."We're siblings, and you just watched Dad treat me like this? Don't you feel sorry for our late mother?"Now he suddenly remembered we were siblings. That was something I had told him before, but he said he didn't have a sister like me.Some time later, Ava seemed to remember Lionel

After I had escaped, the intruders had tied up Sophie and called Elliot. Half-conscious, she heard Elliot's impatient voice. "Do whatever you want. Just stop bothering Ava and me on our last date, okay?"After being treated this way by the husband she had been married to for years, Sophie was completely disheartened. But Elliot still didn't realize his own faults. "You went too far with your act and brought trouble on yourself. Why blame me? You played yourself. Those who do evil will meet their own downfall."He then turned to Dad and said, "Dad, you can't trust them. You've witnessed women fighting when they're jealous. How could there be such a coincidence? I snatched the deal months ago, and they didn't seek revenge all that time. Yet as soon as Ava and I go on a trip, they show up?"I stared at him, dumbfounded by his stupidity.Sophie bowed her head and wiped her tears. "You don't even trust your own family over a mistress? Elliot, I can't believe I ever fell for a man lik

Elliot froze. But before he could process my words, Ava jumped in. "Gracie, if you just admitted you were wrong, Elliot wouldn't even be mad," she said. "After all, you're siblings. But shifting all the blame onto him? That's not fair. No matter what, he isn't at fault here."She lowered her gaze and pouted. "If it's really, as you say, Elliot's enemy seeking revenge, why is it that none of you were in any real danger? I know you all hate me. Don't worry. I'll be gone soon."Her words made Elliot's chest tighten with pain. His expression was full of concern. "I've thought it through. Why should I let you go? Now that the baby's gone, there's no reason to hold back for them. I'm sending them all away!"Ava wrapped her arms lightly around him. "That's not okay. I told you, I'll never put you in a difficult position. I care about you. It has nothing to do with your family. I don't want you spending money on me or arguing with your family because of me. I just want you safe and well."

Every word I spoke pierced straight into Lionel's heart. No matter what expression he showed, all I saw was hypocrisy. I even regretted having loved him so deeply all those years."I know you're still upset, but I'm here. I can at least help a little," Lionel said."I don't need your help!"His face went pale. In the end, he said nothing more. He stayed by my side and finally got through to Elliot. The hospital corridors were eerily silent at night, so I heard Elliot's every word."You actually believe Gracie? She's close to Sophie and is playing along with her schemes. It's like they don't take me seriously!"Lionel lowered his voice and said anxiously, "I'm not lying. It's true. Your wife and child are hurt… The baby… didn't make it. I'm sorry. It's my fault. I should've gone with Gracie to your house sooner."Elliot laughed. "So even you are in on it, huh? Fine. Since we're friends, I'll listen to you. I'll be back after Ava and I finish our camping trip, okay? Besides, Grac

The voice on the other end of the phone came through clearly, and Lionel's expression immediately turned grave. "There really were intruders? Is her sister-in-law okay?"I could tell from his expression that it was the police calling.Despite the pain, I forced myself up and snatched my phone from him, desperate to learn what was going on at home."How's my sister-in-law? How bad are her injuries?""They're severe, mostly to the head and abdomen, though her life isn't in danger. Her baby might not make it, and if it comes to it, the mother's life will take priority. Is that okay?"Hearing that Sophie had been seriously injured again, I felt like someone had hammered a steel fist into my chest.I held Henry tighter, tears streaming freely. After what felt like an eternity, Lionel finally muttered an apology. "Gracie, I'm sorry. I misunderstood you."I laughed bitterly. "What good is saying that now? Sophie's already hurt."He stepped closer and motioned for someone to take Henr

My eyes lit up. Finally, there was a sliver of hope. But just as Lionel picked out a few bodyguards to head out, his phone rang. He glanced at the screen, then at me.After a pause, he put the call on speaker.Elliot's impatient voice came through on the other end of the call. "Gracie came to you, didn't she? Don't listen to her. "Some guy just called me from Sophie's phone and said if I don't hand over 50 million dollars, he'll kill her and the baby. Tell me that's not the dumbest thing you've ever heard. These women, I swear. Jealousy makes them do the craziest things."His words hit me like a bolt of lightning. I felt as if I had fallen into a deep abyss, my mind going completely blank.I could never have foreseen that the brother who once vowed to cherish me forever, the Elliot who once pledged a lifetime to Sophie, would turn out to be so utterly cold and ruthless. He was willing to throw us all away for one woman.Rage and despair twisted in my chest. I screamed, "Elliot
