CHapter 4

Author: That Bunch
It felt like a million needles were stabbing me in the heart. Bloody tears streamed down my face.

Mom rubbed her forehead and glanced at the closed bathroom door. "Mellie, when will you ever be as sensible as Izzy?"

Dad was extremely displeased as well. "It's all your fault for spoiling her rotten, Louise. Instead of learning how to behave herself, a little girl like her spends all her time trying to compete with Izzy for attention."

He shouted at the bathroom, "I'm giving you one last chance, Melanie. Come out now, and we'll change your name back. If you don't come out, then you'll be Melanie Kramer for the rest of your life!"

At that moment, a loud clang rang out in the bathroom. The showerhead had fallen. But to Mom and Dad, it was me deliberately defying them.

Dad slammed his hand on the table and pointed at the bathroom, ranting to Mom, "Look at her! She stayed inside the bathroom all day long just to hog the bathtub, and now she's throwing a tantrum just because of a few words I said!

"Don't anyone try to stop me today. I'm going to teach her a proper lesson!"

Izzy's eyes flashed with smug delight. She quickly handed Dad the key that had dropped into the trash can yesterday. The door unlocked with a click.

Dad was just about to enter the bathroom when the doorbell rang, so he withdrew his hand.

Two smiling women were at the door. The older woman introduced herself first.

"It's nice to meet you. My name is Yvonne Graham, and this is my colleague, Christine Porter. We're social workers from Child Protective Services, and we've come to check on Izzy's living situation."

Mom and Dad quickly escorted them into the apartment. Mom brought over some water for them, while Izzy stood obediently beside her.

The women examined Izzy from head to toe, looking very pleased with what they saw.

"I can tell you two have taken very good care of Izzy," Ms. Graham said. "This is just a routine visit, so don't worry about it. Izzy, I'm going to ask you a few questions, okay?"

Izzy nodded cooperatively.

"How has it been for you, living with the Spencers? Has anyone been mean to you?"

Izzy shook her head. "Uncle James and Aunt Louise take very good care of me. No one is mean to me."

After asking a few more questions, Ms. Graham turned to Mom and Dad with an approving look.

"We've visited many families in similar situations. You two are one of the few who truly treat the child as their own."

Ms. Graham made a few notes in her notebook, giving Mom and Dad a glowing review.

"Thank you for your time," she said before she and Ms. Porter stood up to leave.

All of a sudden, Izzy choked out a sob and said, "Ms. Graham, can you please talk to my younger cousin, Melanie, for me? She always treats me like I'm her enemy. I just want us to get along peacefully."

Ms. Graham frowned at Mom and Dad.

Mom's smile stiffened, and she quickly explained, "Children always compete for attention. It's just normal—"

Ms. Graham cut her off, saying, "Children's behavior must never be brushed off or taken lightly. What seems like a minor issue could easily end up ruining both children's lives."

She crouched down beside Izzy and said softly, "Where's your cousin, Izzy? Take me to her, okay?"

Sniffling, Izzy led Ms. Graham to the bathroom door. "Mellie has stayed inside the bathroom an entire day just to hog the bathtub."

However, the moment Ms. Graham heard that, her expression froze. She flung the door open, and her notebook clattered onto the floor as she cried out in shock.

"Why would I have ever dared to bully Melanie like that if you two hadn't turned a blind eye to it?" Izzy questioned Mom and Dad."Don't think I don't know that you two were always secretly giving Melanie treats behind my back. Since you took me in and made me a part of your family, what gave you the right to treat me like an outsider?"Mom lunged forward and slapped Izzy hard across the face."We never secretly gave Melanie anything behind your back! Everything Melanie got, you got as well! This is all my fault. I never should've agreed to adopt you. I wasted all of my love and care on an ungrateful child! Give me back my daughter!"Mom's cries echoed through the interrogation room. Her emotions overwhelmed her so much that she ended up fainting.Since Izzy was a minor, and her actions didn't fall under premeditated murder, no charges were filed against her. The police soon released her from custody after firmly reprimanding her.But Mom and Dad refused to let her live with them

  • Dear Cousin, Take My Parents   Chapter 8

Mom and Dad only managed to achieve the success they had now because Aunt Gina had loaned them 100 thousand dollars back then. Before Aunt Gina passed away, she had only one dying wish, which was for Mom and Dad to adopt Izzy and take good care of her.I didn't know whether it was because of the money or because it was Aunt Gina's dying wish, but either way, Mom and Dad treated Izzy extremely well after that—even better than they treated me.Izzy's crying grew louder."You're so mean, Aunt Louise! I knew you never considered me a part of your family! You all preferred Melanie…"Mom's eyes drilled into Izzy. "Yes. I preferred my own daughter. You were never truly a part of this family to me. Happy now?"Dad slammed his hand on the table. "That's enough, Louise! I know you're upset, but how can you say that to a 12-year-old child?"Captain Lloyd took a deep breath and pushed the autopsy report forward. "Perhaps… you should take a look at this."Mom's hands trembled as she gently

Dad seemed to finally wrap his head around the situation. He began slapping himself in the face. Soon, his cheeks turned red.Captain Lloyd carefully examined the scene, but his gaze kept snapping back to the two newly printed birth certificates. He took a closer look at them, then stared at Mom and Dad in shock.Mom and Dad lowered their heads in shame.Captain Lloyd's hands trembled slightly as he held the birth certificates. "You had your own daughter's last name changed to Kramer and gave someone else's daughter your last name instead?"Dad lifted his head and squeezed out a reply."Melanie has always been jealous of Izzy… She even called Izzy an outsider, so…"I hovered nearby, my face expressionless. No matter how hard I tried to explain, Mom and Dad always chose to believe Izzy over me.But it didn't matter anymore. The neighbors' murmurs grew louder."Melanie would never act like that. It seems more likely to me that Izzy was making things up.""I've seen it for mysel

Izzy froze the moment she realized how stiff and cold my hand was. That sensation couldn't be faked. She let out a piercing scream, her eyes widening. Her own body went rigid.Dad shoved her aside. "Can you stop making things worse!"Izzy hit the floor with a thud, but she didn't cry or kick up a fuss the way she usually did. She simply sat there, looking completely dazed. "No… This can't be… I just wanted to teach her a lesson…"Only then did Mom and Dad turn their heads toward her. "What did you just say?"Realizing she'd let it slip, Izzy pressed her lips tightly and refused to answer. However, Mom and Dad seemed to have found something to latch onto. They gripped her shoulders, shaking her relentlessly."Answer me! Didn't you say the water would remain warm for 24 hours? Why is it so freezing? Why…"Eventually, the police officers rushed into the apartment and finally separated Izzy from Mom and Dad. By then, her shoulders were red from how tightly they'd gripped her.One

I was just about to teach this spoiled brat a…"The next second, he collapsed to the floor, looking like he'd seen a ghost. The color drained completely from his face. He rubbed his eyes, his expression disbelieving as he craned his neck to look into the bathtub again.A strangled, heart-wrenching scream escaped his throat.Mom rushed into the bathroom. One look at the situation, and her body started to shake. She scrambled toward the bathtub, staring at it with widened eyes.I followed her gaze and saw my body submerged in the bathtub. My blood had dyed the water a deep red.My eyes were fixed open, my skin grayish. My limbs were stiff and sprawled. Having soaked in the water for so long now, my body had already begun to swell.I covered Mom's eyes from behind. "Don't look at me anymore, Mom. I look so ugly now."Izzy was still standing outside, but she didn't get to hear anyone sco
