Chapter 1

"You haven't stepped foot out of this apartment in seven days. Don't you have anything to say to me, Davina?"

The door pushed open, and Bastian's deep voice echoed behind me.

I set my book down and turned around. The new boss of the underground empire was looking down at me. His suit was crisp, carrying the faint scent of rose perfume.

It was Moriah's signature scent.

Seven days ago, he married her in a lavish wedding. They invited New York's elite, and everyone knew how much he adored her. Meanwhile, I—the "wife" who had taken bullets for him and bled to put him on that throne—stayed in this apartment.

Even though we had a marriage pact, I was now nothing more than a mistress kept in the dark.

"I don't have anything to say, Bastian," I gave him a flawless smile. "I know you have your reasons for your decisions. I don't mind."

My obedience made him frown. He stayed silent for a long moment, looking annoyed, before finally choking out, "Good."

"I told you from the start, Moriah is the one I love."

I just kept smiling and nodded.

Bastian's face darkened even more. Suppressing his anger, he ordered coldly, "Bring it in."

Two of his men walked in, placing exquisite boxes on the table. Inside were incredibly rare, top-tier Lingzhi mushrooms.

Before he could speak, I said, "Looks expensive. Do you need me to brew it and send it to Moriah?"

Dead silence. Bastian's voice dropped dangerously low.

"What did you just say?"

"Don't you think this is my way of compensating you?"

I shook my head. "I wouldn't dare overstep. Such rare tonics belong to the Don's wife."

One of his men hesitated. "Miss Bianchi, this is actually—"

"Good. Very good," Bastian's cold laugh cut him off.

His face was livid, his dark eyes swirling with inexplicable rage. Was he actually mad? I was being perfectly compliant, not making things difficult for him at all.

"Davina, you think this passive-aggressive act will make me feel guilty?" he gritted out, glaring at me.

"I'm not being passive-aggressive." I met his gaze calmly. "I just know my place."

My "understanding" seemed to pierce him like a needle. His chest heaved, breathing heavy, as if he had punched a brick wall.

"Since you know your place so well and want to serve her so badly, go brew it! By sunset tomorrow, I want to see you hand it to Moriah yourself!"

"Understood."

He stared at me for a few more seconds, then spun on his heel. The door slammed shut with a deafening crash.

I looked at the closed door and let out a long breath.

My maid, Lily, ran out of the kitchen, her eyes red. "Ma'am... aren't you sad?" she choked out, looking at the herbs. "You went through hell and back with the Boss. How can he humiliate you like a servant?"

I smiled, picked up the mushrooms, and headed to the kitchen. "Why would I be sad? We just used each other."

Lily didn't get it. I didn't care about his compensation, nor did I care about being the Don's wife.

I was the true missing heiress of the Bianchi family. When they brought me back, it wasn't to make up for lost time—they just needed a pawn.

Back then, Bastian wasn't the Don yet. His position was unstable, and he lived on a knife's edge every day. They didn't want their beloved Moriah taking that risk, but they needed the alliance. So, they forced me to marry him.

They threatened me with the life of the person I cared about most: my childhood friend, Wynn. Wynn was my neighbor when I lived with my adoptive mother. After she died, he was my only family, and my love.

To keep Wynn alive, I took the deal. I married Bastian in Moriah's place, took the bullets and betrayals of the mafia world for her, and helped him seize power.

In exchange, my family gave me a black-market pill to fake my death, promising me freedom once it was over.

Life after marriage was exactly as dangerous as expected. Ambushes, shootouts, setups. I got hurt countless times and was poisoned more than once. But I never complained. I managed everything around Bastian perfectly, playing the flawless mafia wife.

When he needed a blood transfusion, I was the first to volunteer. When a rival family set a trap for him, I took the bullet.

Somewhere along the line, rumors started spreading that I was madly in love with him. I couldn't explain myself. I just wanted to help him secure his throne so I could finally go find Wynn.

Now, it was all over.

The stove flickered to life, the broth bubbling in the clay pot. I watched the steam rise and touched my chest.

Seven days ago, on the day Bastian married Moriah, I took that pill.

Five more days.

"Miss, it's ready," Lily's voice pulled me back.

I nodded and poured the hot broth into a thermos. "Get the car ready. We're going to the Howard estate."

In five days, the pill would fully kick in. Then, I would leave this cage and Bastian behind forever.

After saying that, I quietly looked at him.Bastian stared at me dead-on, as if trying to find even the slightest trace of a lie on my calm face. But there was none.On my face, there was only frankness."Good... good. So everything I did was for nothing..." He suddenly started laughing lowly. His laugh was hoarse, pulling at his abdominal wounds, causing him to cough violently. He coughed like it was tearing his heart and lungs apart, his face turning bright red.I watched quietly, making no move to approach him. Finally, his coughing stopped. When he looked up again, he said:"If that's the case,""You can go."My heart gave an imperceptible skip.I didn't hesitate. I turned and walked toward the door, step by step."Wait."His voice sounded behind me."Davina," he looked at my back, his voice terribly hoarse, "in this vial is the newest neurotoxin from the black market."I saw him fumble for something under his pillow and place it on the nightstand with a soft click."There is no an

Marcus arrived very quickly. Just as they were about to move him onto the stretcher, the unconscious man suddenly reacted. His eyes snapped open. Those pupils, glazed over from blood loss and extreme pain, saw me. In an instant, disregarding his torn abdominal wound, he struggled to sit up and grabbed my wrist in a death grip. His hand was burning hot, yet his grip was astonishingly strong, like a red-hot iron pincer branding me with pain."Don't go..." He looked at me, his lips trembling, his voice hoarse and broken. "Davina... don't leave me again..."I tried to break free, but he gripped tighter, his knuckles turning white from the force."Boss! You're badly hurt, you need medical attention immediately!" Marcus was sweating bullets with anxiety. He wanted to step in, but didn't dare use force."Get lost!" Bastian growled low. His bloodshot eyes were filled with an obsessive madness, his gaze never leaving my face. "No one... is taking you away from me..."Wynn's face turned green. H

Bastian closed his eyes. When he opened them again, they were full of bloodshot veins. He slowly raised his hand, giving a "stand down" signal to his men.The men in black quickly backed out of the house."Fine." His voice was terribly hoarse. "I won't force you."My hand holding the gun didn't lower; I watched him warily."But I won't give up, Davina."Saying that, he didn't look at me again. He turned and strode away.It wasn't until his black figure completely disappeared that my tense nerves suddenly snapped. The gun in my hand dropped to the floor with a clatter, my legs gave out, and I nearly collapsed."Davina!" Wynn rushed over, hugging me tight, his voice trembling with lingering fear."Are you okay?" he asked shakily, touching my cold face.I leaned against his chest, unable to stop shaking.Despite surviving this ordeal, there was no peace in my heart, only worry for the future.I knew Bastian wouldn't just let this go.Anna threw herself at me, hugging my leg, crying so har

Just as my hand touched the door curtain, Bastian's voice rang out behind me.His voice no longer carried the icy intimidation of a Godfather. Instead, it carried an uncontrollable tremor, and a borderline pathetic plea."Come back with me." He spoke softly, every word sounding like it drained all his strength. "I really, really miss you.""These past three years, I took revenge on the Bianchi family, I punished her, I searched the whole world for a way to resurrect you. Everyone said I was crazy..."He grew more agitated as he spoke, practically on the verge of tears. This was the first time I had ever seen him cry.I quietly watched his loss of control. Waiting for him to finish, I spoke softly."Bastian, do you remember who took my adoptive mother's necklace?"His body visibly stiffened."Do you remember why I was stuck in a sub-zero freezer for two days?""And that time, why did I fall from such a high place?"He opened his mouth to say something but found his throat too dry to mak

(Davina's POV)That voice. Low and familiar."Long time no see."My fingertips trembled uncontrollably, but I immediately clenched my fists, forcefully suppressing the shudder.I lowered my eyes, not daring to look into the eyes I had seen in countless nightmares. Turning slightly, I whispered to Wynn, "Wynn, take Anna to the break room."Wynn looked at me, then at the intruder, his doubts deepening. But he didn't ask anything. He just squeezed my hand hard, speaking in a voice only we could hear, "Call me if you need anything." Then, holding Anna, he walked into the back room, looking back at us three times.Only the two of us were left in the gallery. The air was terrifyingly quiet.I took a deep breath. When I looked up again, my face was entirely calm.I even walked behind the counter and poured him a glass of water. "Sir, please have some water."He suddenly twitched the corner of his mouth, revealing a smile with zero warmth. "Madam, you look very much like my late wife."My eyel

  • Dear Don, I Died for Another Man   Chapter 16

In the small town near the Canadian border, the spring weather was lovely. On the corner of the street was a cozy little craft shop. Inside hung some paintings and hand-woven decorations. At this moment, a woman in a plain long dress was keeping her head down, patiently holding the hand of a rosy, porcelain-doll-like little girl, teaching her to paint on a canvas. The little girl was about two or three years old. She wore her hair in two little buns, had pink cheeks, and stared with big round eyes. Mimicking her mother, she called out in a milky, childish voice, "The sun is yellow..."The woman's eyes were gentle, a smile on her lips. She lightly kissed the girl's hair. "Good job, baby."The door was pushed open. A handsome, refined man walked in, holding a cup of hot coffee. He naturally handed it to the woman's lips, saying gently, "Davina, take a break."Davina looked back at him and smiled. It was a relaxed and bright smile, carrying complete trust and reliance. "Got it."Wynn smil
