“Okay, sweetheart. Now, I want you to slowly exhale as you lower yourself, okay?” I instructed, watching Theo slowly rise up onto his toes, his face slightly covered in sweat from the exercise “That’s it! You did great! How do you feel? Is your chest hurting at all?”

“Uh… Just a little,” he replied as if embarrassed to admit it, even though he was grimacing in pain and his breathing was a little too erratic for someone who had only been exercising for half an hour.

"It's okay, dear. Your physical therapist gave you all these exercises so you can gradually improve. Soon, your medication will start to take effect, and it will become much easier, you'll see." I smiled at him, though my eyes were on his heart rate appearing on the small screen in my hands, connected to the device around his finger.

His arrhythmia was still very high for such a young child, but I had already adjusted his medication as prescribed by his cardiologist. There was still a small possibility that he wouldn't res

When I took the job of caring for a single child 24/7, the last thing I expected was to have free time. And, well, in any other context this might have been welcome, but not when I was alone in the middle of Mycroft Manor, with nothing to do and at serious risk of running into Connor, Jane, or even Michael if I made the mistake of simply wandering around.Staying in Theo's room wasn't my first option, but for some reason, Mae seemed to think it was the best place for me to wait out Mrs. Harris's classes. Probably because no matter if I stayed in the living room, the library, the garden, or even the kitchen, it was highly likely that some Mycroft would show up wanting a fight. I didn't understand why my mother's old room—which I sometimes had to force myself to remember was now mine—wasn't an option, but Mae convinced me when she reminded me that Theo had been waiting for a long time to simply enjoy some free time with his new friend. And it wasn't like I had many other places to go,

There was only one good thing about the Ellisons and that was their eldest son, Richard. It was funny that Jane actually thought her brother's presence would actually intimidate me in some way, but then again, that was Jane. Stefana's ex-husband had managed to take all her common sense away from her and put it all into her son.Well, at least I could feel relieved. Of all the counterattacks I imagined Michael could devise, making Richard one of Theodore's doctors was the best and safest. Even as Jane led Theo and me to the small recreation area near the garden, an expression of pure pleasure and superiority on her face, I couldn't have been more at ease. Because, as I expected, the minute we finally found Richard sitting at one of the tables there, under the umbrella, he looked apologetic even before we approached.“Jane, I already told you…” he began, before any of us could join him, “There’s nothing I can do to…”“Here’s your patient!” Jane pulled Theo away from me a little too roug

I guess it's a good thing I didn't waste a single moment thinking about what it would be like to sleep under the roof of Mycroft Manor again. Because, during my first night there, I didn't actually sleep. I just had a staring contest with the ceiling until my eyes closed without my consent. One moment, the night outside seemed less dark through the window curtains, and the next, the doze I'd fallen into was interrupted by a knock at the door.“Let Eden rest, Theodore.” Mae’s voice sounded nearby, a worried murmur “You know everyone needs a good night’s sleep to have a good day ahead…”“But Dad’s already awake and you said the breakfast is almost on the table.” he huffed, his voice sounding much more energetic than the day before “I promised her I’d make her some sandwiches to eat together when she came to live with me! She’ll like it! I bet she’s not even sleepy…”“I wish you were this excited when I wake you up early for lessons with your tutor.” Mae grumbled.“It’s not the same,” h

“And this hallway is where my grandfather puts all these big pictures. They’re all really, really boring. Some of them don’t even have color, but he still talks about them all so much when we pass by,” Theo complained, and I had to bite my cheek to keep from laughing when he started yawning, as if just remembering Michael’s monologue had made his tiredness worse. Not that he didn't have reason to be exhausted. Even though I'd held him in my arms the entire time, Theo had spent over an hour guiding me through every nook and cranny of the mansion, detailing what made them fun and what didn't. I knew all those places, of course, but he didn't need to know, he said. Especially when he was showing me around with such enthusiasm.Thankfully, there was no sign of Connor, Michael, or Jane around, not even their screams. Even Stefana seemed to have left at some point, probably irritated enough not to even bother to say goodbye to me.I had to find a way to make it up to her for being the bait

“Oh, God, it’s so good to have you back, honey. I’ve walked by this house so many times over the past few years, wishing Connor could have a moment of clarity and bring you back… And now you’re here!” Mae continued to talk all the way to the room she had prepared for me, her voice growing shaky “I’m so happy! Just as I’m sure Ruth and your mother would be happy if they could see their little girl walking these halls again!”“Please, Mae, calm down.” I soothed her, hugging her shoulders “I’m also very happy to see you again, but calm down, okay? So much emotion isn’t good for your heart.”“Oh, you… Always more concerned about other people’s health than yourself.” She laughed, kissing my temple just like she used to when I was a child “Don’t worry, my heart is stronger than the doctors think. I wouldn’t have endured so much these past few years if it weren’t.” Mae tried to hide it as she blinked back a tear, but she couldn’t.“Is Fred’s condition still the same?” I bit my lip, my heart
