MAVERICK

I shut the door behind me and leaned both hands on the bathroom sink, my head bowed, chest heaving as I tried to process what the hell had just happened in there.

I raised my head to look at my reflection in the mirror. It didn’t say shit. Just stared back like it was waiting for me to crack first.

It had been a long fucking night for me.

I’d locked Iris without even thinking about the kids or whether they would need her, I just focused on making her feel sorry.

There was no single version of this where I didn’t come off looking like an asshole. I knew that, and yet, I still did it. And then I’d ended up blaming her for it. The look on her face when I was being mean to her gutted me badly. My heart twisted violently in my chest, but I just couldn't stop.

Maybe because I needed space, or because I needed to breathe. To know what I was walking into before deciding to drag her into any more of this mess.

Rhoda’s words were still lodged in my head, playing over and over like a b

MAVERICKI hadn’t slept. It had been a few days since Rhoda died, and I couldn’t say it had been a smooth couple of days.Iris was avoiding me, instead, she chose to focus all her energy on taking care of her sister. She was walking on pins and needles around Chelsea, but Chelsea didn’t even seem to be falling for it.In fact, she was annoyed about it.That in itself was evident with the way Chelsea had yelled at Iris in the kitchen to “stop hounding her” earlier today. I couldn't say I enjoyed watching the way Iris’s face fell, but an even more bitter pill to swallow was the look that she’d given me when she discovered that I’d seen everything.Embarrassment mixed with anger, disgust curling the edges of her pupils. She hated me again. And rightfully so.But I would rather take that than give her answers to a question I wasn’t even sure about myself.I didn’t want to dump info on her, so I was a bit relieved when she didn’t even come back to ask me about it. Iris was like a ticking

  • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY: GOODBYE

IRIS I froze on the spot, unable to take a step forward or say anything. She wasn’t supposed to be here, but the door was open, and my yelling must’ve woken her up.Once again I let my emotions lead me into something I wasn’t ready to handle.Chelsea’s voice was small. Too small. Like if she made it louder, then she’d be accepting that it was real. That she hadn’t heard wrong, and our mother really was dead. She was just ten years old. She didn’t deserve this.“Chels,” I whispered, taking a step forward.Chelsea stepped back, breaking into a run in the direction of her room, and my heart sank. I felt Maverick’s touch on my shoulder, and I wanted to sink into it. Into him. But I couldn’t.Because there was a huge possibility that my husband’s father killed my mother, and he was trying to keep the truth from me.“You need my help with her?” Maverick’s voice was soft as he asked.I shook my head, not turning back as I shrugged his hand off my shoulder. “I got her.”I didn’t wait for him

  • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY-NINE: MY MOM IS DEAD?

IRIS I didn’t know why I was expecting Maverick to say something else. Something other than the fact that she’d actually tried to kill herself.Maybe because it wouldn’t make me feel like a complete asshole for hating her. But she did. She tried to kill herself, and failed. Only for her to give up the ghost in the hospital less than three days later.Rhoda Blake… dead? That seemed like such a foreign word.I remembered how as a child I used to wish that she’d just drop dead, and as a teenager, I used to imagine using a knife from the kitchen to stab her in the stomach. That was how deep my hatred for her went. She didn’t deserve to live, but she did. And she showed herself, came back. And I wanted to say I wished that she hadn’t.But then, I would never have known that I had a little sister. The same little sister who lay beside me now. I was in Chelsea’s room, sitting in her bed, watching as she slept soundly, snoring lightly in her sleep.Amy was just a few feet away in her crib.

  • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY-EIGHT: I NEED TO BE ALONE

MAVERICK I caught Iris right before she hit the floor. Her body was weightless in my arms, but the weight of what had just happened crushed me all the same. Her skin was cold, her breath shaky, brows pulled together, eyes unfocused as she looked at me. Iris didn't cry or say a word. She just… sank. Like her soul had just unplugged and drifted off without asking for permission.“Iris,” I whispered, pressing my lips to her temple. “I’m here. I’ve got you. I’ve got you,” I said all over and over. This was not how I expected things to go. Rhoda was completely fine last night. She may have been sedated, but she was okay.Something about this entire thing was wrong. A heart attack, they’d said when I got to the hospital, but I knew that it wasn’t.Bullshit. That’s what it was.A neat, polished excuse to cover up the fact that someone had walked into that hospital and ended her life. This was a silent, calculated murder that they were now calling a heart attack.Owens had been the one to

  • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY-SEVEN: NO

IRIS All day, all I kept hearing was Maverick’s warning—no, his pleas—for me not to leave the house.I kept trying to make sense of it, kept trying to rationalize why Maverick would say something like that, kept wondering why the hell he was at the hospital to see my mother.Kept wondering about the note…The note that I was very sure was a suicide note that my mother had been hoping that I would find after she tried to kill herself.God, I didn’t even want to go into that right now.But Maverick said it was fine. That he was going to tell me everything after work. After work seemed like a very long time to wait, but I had a few ideas to keep myself busy.I had no idea what was going on, and to be honest, the major thing keeping me here was the fact that I couldn’t leave Chelsea and Amy alone. Tania had come to work in the morning, but she left due to some family emergency. Nothing too serious, she’d said. That had made me feel guilty for some reason.Tania had been taking care of us

THIRD PERSON POVRhoda Blake couldn’t sleep.Something felt wrong. The silence in the hospital was too eerie, too abnormal. Her nurse was supposed to give her her night medication over an hour ago, but she hadn’t showed. She was tired. Too tired to stand up. Too weak to move. She blinked up at the ceiling, her body weak under the scratchy hospital blankets. The ache in her wrist had dulled, but barely. It was still there, serving as a reminder that she’d tried to leave and failed. That she was still here. Still breathing. Still burdened with everything that she never said. But deep down, she knew she wasn’t safe. That she’d failed to do what she was supposed to do, and now, there would be repercussions. She didn’t want to sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Chelsea, her baby, and Iris… the woman she’d failed constantly. The monitor beeped quietly beside her in a steady rhythm and she listened to the sound of her own heartbeat. And then, she heard it.The sound of the door s
