LOGINPatricia’s POV
By breakfast the next morning, it already felt like I was the guest.
I walked down the stairs around eight o'clock, expecting the house to be quiet like it usually was before Maverick left for the office. Instead, the smell of fresh coffee and cooked pastries hit me before I even reached the bottom step.
When I stepped into the kitchen, Darbie was already standing behind the island, wearing one of Maverick's oversized white button-down shirts with the sleeves rolled up. She was laughing as she poured coffee into a mug, totally at home in my space.
Maverick was sitting at the breakfast table, his laptop open, but his eyes were on her. I had not seen him look that relaxed in months.
"Oh, good morning, Patricia!" Darbie called out, giving me a bright, cheerful smile like she was the hostess welcoming a late visitor. "I hope we didn't wake you. I just knew Maverick needed his double espresso with two sugars before his nine o'clock meeting, so I made it for him."
My fingers tightened around the edge of my robe. I had been making his coffee every morning for five years, and I always gave him one sugar because he told me he hated things too sweet.
Maverick picked up the mug and took a sip without correcting her. He did not even look up at me.
"Thanks, Darbie," he said, his voice softer than it ever was with me. "You always remember."
I stood there in the doorway, feeling a cold sensation spread through my stomach. Darbie knew tiny details about him, things only someone who was deeply close to him should know.
She knew how he liked his eggs, which news channel he watched in the morning, and even the private nickname his mother used to call him when he was little. Every time she brought up an old memory, Maverick actually listened, nodding along like I was not even in the room.
I started wondering just how important this woman really was to him. I had spent five years trying to get under his cold skin, believing he was just a distant person by nature.
Seeing him with Darbie proved me wrong in less than twelve hours. He was not incapable of warmth; he just did not want to give it to me.
The small humiliations kept piling up as the morning went on.
When I sat down at the table to ask Maverick about a charity gala we were supposed to attend together next week, Darbie cut in before he could answer.
"Oh, Maverick, you can't go to that!" she gasped, reaching out to rest her hand lightly over his on top of the table. "That is the same night as the alumni dinner in New York. You promised months ago you would take me as your guest."
Maverick looked at her hand, then shifted his gaze to me, his expression turning cold and distant again.
"Find someone else to go with you, Patricia," he said flatly, pulling his hand away from Darbie to close his laptop. "I will be in New York with Darbie next week."
He did not ask if I was okay with it. He did not apologize for ditching me.
He just chose her, casually and effortlessly, right in front of my face.
Later that afternoon, I decided to drive down to the Anderson Global headquarters. I needed to pick up some tax documents from the finance department, but mostly, I just needed to get out of the house where Darbie was busy telling the decorators how to rearrange the guest room.
The main lobby of the massive glass building was busy as usual. I walked toward the private elevators, keeping my head down, but as I passed the main break room, I heard two junior executives talking near the water cooler.
"Did you hear about the tech division?" one whispered, leaning closer to the other. "Another patent leak happened last night. Someone leaked the blueprints for the new AI drive to our main rival."
"Are you serious?" the second girl gasped. "That is the second time this month. Mr. Anderson is going to tear the whole building apart when he finds out who is doing it."
"They said the leak came from a high-level account," the first girl added, lowering her voice even more. "Someone with top-tier security clearance."
I kept walking, not paying much attention to the office gossip. Corporate drama was Maverick's business, not mine, and I had enough of my own problems to deal with today.
I got my documents from finance and drove back home, the heavy gray sky outside matching the hollow feeling in my chest.
By six o'clock, I was sitting in the living room, staring out the window at the rain starting to fall against the glass.
The front door slammed open with a loud, violent bang that made me jump out of my seat.
Maverick walked into the house, his coat soaking wet, looking more furious than I had ever seen him in five years of marriage. His sharp jaw was locked tight, his knuckles white as he gripped a thick manila folder in his right hand.
Darbie stepped out of the kitchen, looking startled by the noise, but Maverick walked right past her without saying a word.
He marched straight into the living room, his dark eyes locked onto me like a predator stalking its prey.
He lifted the folder and threw it onto the marble coffee table between us. The papers spilled out across the dark wood, showing pages of printed code, company timestamps, and official signature pages stamped with the Anderson Global seal.
"Maverick?" I asked, my voice trembling as I took a small step back from the table. "What is going on? What is all this?"
He looked me straight in the eye.
"Explain why your signature is on classified company files."
I stared at the papers.
I'd never seen them before.
Maverick's POVI smiled to myself as I stared at the message on my phone, reading the results for what felt like the hundredth time. The three boys were mine. My sons. My flesh and blood, the little boys who had looked at me with curious eyes and spoken to me so freely without knowing who I was to them. They were mine, and I had missed years of their lives because of my own stupidity.I had a daughter, too.Clara.The little girl with the beautiful smile, the sharp tongue, and the confidence to ask me questions that had left me struggling for answers. She was Patricia's daughter, but she was also mine. I had not tested her DNA, but there was no reason to believe she was any less my child than her brothers. If the boys were mine, then Clara was mine, too, and I could not wait to have her in my arms again.I smiled wider. I was going to be a great father.Secretly and openly, I would be the father they deserved. I would watch them grow, attend their school events, listen to their storie
Jimmy knew Maverick wanted Patricia back.It was obvious in the way Maverick looked at her, the way his attention followed her whenever she entered a room, and the way he seemed to find every possible excuse to remain close to her. Jimmy had seen it long before Patricia was willing to admit it herself. At first, Jimmy had been completely certain that he wanted Patricia to be happy. And if Patricia's happiness meant being with the father of her children, then perhaps that was what he needed to accept. He had told himself that repeatedly. Patricia deserved to be happy. Her children deserved to know their father. Maverick deserved the opportunity to make up for everything he had done.It was simple. At least, it had been simple. Now, Jimmy was not so sure.He sat quietly in the toom, staring into the abyss where the children's noises faded. Patricia had left with Maverick in such a hurry that he had barely had time to process it.He frowned. Why did that bother him? He had never felt tha
Maverick's POV I could see the pain in Patricia's eyes before she turned away from me.She had tried so hard not to cry in front of me. I saw the way she pressed her lips together, the way she blinked repeatedly as though she could force the tears back into her eyes. She had looked at me for only a few seconds before looking away, but those few seconds were enough.I knew.I was the reason for those tears. I was the reason she was heartbroken. And perhaps the worst part was knowing that I was the reason we were both heartbroken.I had spent so much time blaming circumstances, other people, misunderstandings, and even Patricia herself for what had happened between us. But standing there and watching her walk away with tears in her eyes made it impossible to lie to myself anymore.I had hurt her. I had broken the woman I loved. The question was, what could I possibly do now to fix it?Should I strike some kind of deal with Jimmy? Should I talk to the children and try to make them comfo
Patricia's POV I did not know what to make of Maverick's words. For a moment, I simply stood there in his arms, unable to decide whether I was supposed to comfort him or pull away from him. He had sounded so broken that it frightened me. This was Maverick. The same man who had once made me feel like I was nothing. The same man whose actions had left wounds in me that I still carried every single day. Yet, right then, he sounded like a man who had lost every bit of strength he possessed.I finally pulled away.I did it so quickly that I barely had time to see his expression change before his arms caught me again.“Maverick.” I called softly. “Please.” His voice stopped me. “If you want to be mean to me, be mean to me,” he whispered. “If you want to hate me, hate me. I know I deserve it. But please, not right now.”I stared at him.He tightened his arms around me, his breathing uneven. “I am going to break, Patricia. I know you might not care anymore, and maybe you should not care, but
Darbie stared at Leeyah as the woman's words settled into her mind. She understood what Leeyah was asking. There was nothing complicated about it anymore. Leeyah wanted her to continue sleeping with Khalid, keep him distracted, keep him interested, and perhaps make it easier for Leeyah to secure whatever she wanted from her husband. In return, Leeyah was offering her protection, money, or whatever Darbie might need. That part, Darbie could understand. What she could not understand was the other part.Leeyah wanted her to sleep with her too.The thought was so absurd that Darbie stared at her for several seconds before a laugh escaped her lips. Then another. Soon, she was laughing so loudly that she had to cover her mouth.Leeyah's expression changed immediately. She looked shocked and surprised. Then deeply offended.“What exactly is so funny?” she asked.Darbie tried to control herself, but another laugh slipped out. “You.”“Me? I never thought I was funny.”“Yes, you.” Darbie wiped t
Maverick's POV“Where is your wife and kids?”Clara’s innocent question caught me completely off guard. For a few seconds, I could not find my voice. My mouth opened, but nothing came out. I stared at the little girl sitting across from me, and the question echoed inside my head until it became almost deafening.“My wife and my…” I stammered, then stopped.Patricia immediately stepped in. “Clara, you should not ask questions like that.”I looked at Patricia. There was something almost panicked in her eyes, something that made me wonder why a simple question about my family had affected her so much.“No,” I said quietly. “It is okay.”Patricia frowned. “Maverick…”“They can ask whatever they want.” I looked at the children and tried to smile. “There is nothing wrong with being curious.”Jimmy cleared his throat from beside Patricia. “Children, sometimes there are questions that adults need time to answer.”I nodded because, for once, Jimmy had said exactly what I needed someone to say.
