“I won’t apologize for last night,” Asher said finally, staring directly at his parents. “I brought Vera because I wanted to. Because she deserves to be seen.”

“You’re being reckless,” Evelyn hissed. “And weak.”

“No,” he said with dangerous calm, “I’m being honest.”

Richard took a step forward. “You want to throw away everything for a girl who’s nothing but...”

“Don’t finish that sentence,” Asher warned, his voice dropping low, almost too soft.

For a moment, no one moved. Even the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner felt too loud.

Evelyn smoothed her blouse. “So what now? You’re going to date her publicly? Invite her to every function? Pretend this will lead anywhere real?”

Asher exhaled, pinching the bridge of his nose. “What I do with Vera is none of your concern. I’ll handle the media. The board. And if Sarah has a problem with it, she can call her PR team.”

He grabbed his coffee at last and turned to leave.

But before he stepped out of the room, he paused at the door.

Vera tapped her nails once against the glass.“This is your chance,” she said. “To stop thinking of me as the girl who disappeared or the daughter who didn’t grow up in these halls. I’m here now. And if we work together, we can take the Sterling Group somewhere it’s never gone before.”There was no fanfare. No applause.Just a slow ripple of understanding, of shifting perspectives, of respect. It was a start. And that was all she needed. As the meeting adjourned and people began filing out, Vera gathered her folders calmly. Hargrove walked by her side.“That was a hell of a debut,” he said. “You made your mother proud today.”Vera’s throat tightened slightly, but she kept her chin high.“She gave me the foundation,” she said softly. “I’m just building the rest.”Just as she stepped out of the room, her phone buzzed again. This time, a message from the Donovan Corporation.A calendar invite for a preliminary partnership review meeting.Requested by Asher Donovan. She stared at it for a

“I wasn’t just sitting at Dorian Fontaine’s table looking pretty,” she said coolly. “I built things. Things that changed the direction of entire departments. I worked under pseudonyms because I wasn’t interested in fame or reputation. I wanted the freedom to create.”A pause. Then, softer: “But I see now that silence is often mistaken for irrelevance.”She stepped away from the screen and turned back toward the table, arms lightly crossed.“My mother didn’t give me this company because I was her daughter. She gave it to me because I’ve earned it. Just in a way that none of you ever took the time to learn.”One of the older board members, Mr. Linwood, who had remained quiet throughout, finally leaned forward, steepling his fingers.“I was on the acquisition board that bid on Helix,” he said slowly. “We were outbid by Fontaine. Never knew who built it.”He looked up.There was something different in his gaze now.Something Vera hadn’t seen since she walked in.Acknowledgment.“You’re sa

Vera stepped out of the elevator on the 42nd floor, her heels tapping rhythmically against the polished marble as she approached the boardroom for her first official appearance as Elena Sterling’s named successor. Her heart fluttered, a strange mix of nerves and pride swelling in her chest. She’d barely slept the night before. She could still hear Elena’s voice in the letter… still feel the ghost of her presence beside her at the burial grounds.Today was the beginning of a new era, not just for the Sterling Group, but for her.She pulled open the boardroom door. And the air changed.Silence.The room fell so quiet she could hear the hum of the projector in the corner.A dozen eyes turned toward her, blinking, unreadable, wide. Not warm. Not welcoming. Not even skeptical.Just... cold.“Good morning,” Vera said, clearing her throat. She walked in, spine straight, chin high. “I hope I’m not late.”No one responded immediately. Her eyes landed on Mr. Hargrove, the CFO. He wouldn’t meet

The office door knocked softly.“Ms. Sterling?” Laurel’s voice came through gently. “There’s a reporter from The Herald waiting downstairs. They’re asking if you’d like to make a comment.”Vera’s fingers tightened around her phone. She couldn't breathe. It had only been one day.One day since she accepted her future. And already, someone was dragging her name through the mud. Using pieces of truth and turning them into poison. She looked at her phone again, chest rising and falling quickly. There was one missed call. From Dorian. And a message: “Vera… please don’t believe everything you see. Call me.”She deleted the message.A soft knock again. “Ms. Sterling? The board is gathering in Conference A. They’re… concerned.”Vera rose slowly, shoulders pulled back, but her heart thundering in a cage of betrayal and confusion. She opened her mouth. Her voice came out like steel dipped in ice.“Tell them I’ll be there in five minutes.”...................The room was pristine. Tense. Execut

Sarah smirked as she swirled her wine, the city lights painting silver streaks across the glass.Dorian's voice still lingered in her ear, heavy with frustration and quiet desperation. She lived for this."You really want her back that badly, don't you?" she murmured, tone syrupy sweet. “Even after everything.”Dorian didn’t answer that. The silence on the other end was answer enough.Sarah’s smile widened.“Well,” she purred, rising from her chair and walking slowly toward her window. “Since you’re finally ready to stop playing house and start playing war, here’s how we do it.”She paused dramatically, enjoying every second.“You’ve been too soft, Dorian. Trying to win her over with truth and loyalty and safe little havens. But women like Vera, once they’ve had a taste of power, of independence, they don’t fall for that anymore. You want her back?”“Yes.”“Then we hit her where she’s most vulnerable.”His voice darkened. “You’re not touching Eira.”A short, cruel laugh. “Oh please. I

Dorian stood in the center of his suite, phone still in hand, her final words ringing in his ears.“I just.. need space.”Space.That was always the beginning of the end.The line had gone dead, but Dorian still stared at the screen, as if willing it to change. To call back. To rewind time. To undo the letter that had ruined everything. His jaw clenched, breath hitching once, twice, before his composure broke.CRASH.The glass tumbler on his desk flew across the room and shattered against the wall, bourbon dripping down like tears. His breaths came fast now, fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. The perfectly organized space around him, sleek, clean, minimal, suddenly felt suffocating. Everything about it reeked of control. Order. Precision. And now, it all mocked him.Everything he had done, for her.All the sacrifices. All the silence. The nights he stayed up watching Eira breathe in her crib, listening for her cries when Vera was too exhausted to wake. The business d
